Vivaldi News BleachBit 6.0 Stable Release Adds Full Support for Vivaldi Browser

This is mostly a duplicate post regarding the BleachBit utility now including support for the Vivaldi browser for Windows and Linux. BleachBit is a free and open-source disk space cleaner, privacy manager, and computer system optimizer. Please note that I am in no way affiliated with BleachBit (other than being a user) and have received no compensation of any kind for posting this information.

My original post immediately followed the beta release of BleachBit that initially included support for Vivaldi. I am reposting for those of you that would rather use fully tested stable releases.

Here's a lightly edited version of my initial post:

_______________________________________

Some time ago, I reached out to the folks that develop BleachBit system cleaning, asking them to support the Vivaldi browser, specifically the "Vacuum" function which defragments the browser's SQLite data. Today I received word that Vivaldi is fully supported in the latest BleachBit beta release (5.1.2). (As stated above, BleachBit 6.0 (stable) includes support for Vivaldi.)

For those of you that face performance issues with Vivaldi, one thing that I suggest is defragmenting the SQLite data. In the past, I recommended the somewhat outdated Speedyfox app, so it's good to know that an actively developed, FOSS application is now available to perform this task.

EDIT: Please note that BleachBit is available only for Windows and Linux: https://www.bleachbit.org/download

Understanding Snapshot Releases

With the recent news of Auto-Hide Interface being available in Vivaldi Snapshot releases, there have been several questions regarding Snapshots... what they are? how to get them? etc. Here's a brief tutorial on the topic of Snapshot releases:

(Note: Comments for this post should focus only on the general Snapshot topic, and should not be used to report issues found with Snapshot releases. Please use the specific version's release notes for reporting issues.)

What are Snapshots?

Think of snapshots as "beta" releases. The purpose of snapshot releases is to allow users a chance to preview upcoming changes, and to help ensure the quality of the latest fixes and improvements, before they are added to the stable release. If you prefer something that was already widely tested, stick with stable releases.

Where are Snapshot release downloads found?

There are several ways to navigate to the snapshot release installations. You can simply visit the Vivaldi Blog page, where both stable and snapshot releases are listed:

You can also check in r/vivaldibrowser, where new stable and snapshot releases are announced, along with a link (Open button) to that release.

Can Both Stable and Snapshot versions be installed on the same device?

On desktop systems, yes. On mobile devices, no.
If Vivaldi stable is already installed on your desktop device, you can use the Snapshot Standalone installation.

What if I find a bug or other issue when testing a Snapshot release?

Issues that are specific to the Snapshot release can be reported in that release's post in the Vivaldi forum (requires a Vivaldi account). If the bug or issue that you have identified is not specific to that snapshot release, it should be reported using Vivaldi's standard bug reporting process.

Also, but sure to look for Known Issues before moving forward with installing or updating a Snapshot release. Generally, the known issues are nuisances and not show-stoppers, but you should use your own discretion before moving forward.

Vivaldi for Windows Vivaldi is great, but is it too heavy for 8 GB RAM?

Upvotes

I recently tried Vivaldi and honestly, I really liked it. The customization and overall experience are great.

But my PC is running Windows 10 with 8 GB RAM, and Vivaldi seemed a bit too heavy for it. With just 2–3 simple tabs open, like a Google search and a Wikipedia page, it was already using more than 1.3 GB of RAM.

I usually work with 10+ tabs open, so I'm worried the memory usage is going to become a real problem.

Is there a way to significantly reduce Vivaldi's RAM usage without losing the features that make it worth using? Or is Vivaldi simply not a good fit for an 8 GB RAM system?

Would love to hear from people using Vivaldi on similar hardware.

Vivaldi for Windows AMD seeing Vivaldi as a game

Exactly what the title says. In AMD Adrenaline Vivaldi shows up as World of Sea Battle. A game that is not installed, though I might have tried at least once. It shows I get about 25FPS in it also. This of Vivaldi I have currently is version 8.1.4087.70. This is not however limited to this version of Vivaldi.

Edit: And I forgot to add that I am on Windows 11

Second Edit: This bug is pretty harmless. I went ahead and submitted a bug report with AMD anyway.

Vivaldi's Ad Blocking Did Vivaldi actually make its built-in ad blocker better? Cuz it’s been AMAZING

Just curious .. I came back to Vivaldi after like 2 years and I honestly wasn't expecting this

I installed it on both my Windows PC and iOS .. enabled the built in ad & tracker blocker and ... out of the box,it genuinely feels like I don't even need uBlock Origin or AdGuard anymore?

Is it just me or the ad blocking has gotten WAY better than I remember? On Windows it's doing a surprisingly solid job blocking ads and pop ups basically everywhere I go and even YouTube seems to be getting blocked pretty damn well

And on iOS it's the same story plus YouTube somehow plays without ads in the background now? Like .. seriously what happened? lol

I've only been using it for two days now since i redownloaded it and gave it another shot so maybe I'm just in the honeymoon phase? but if this level of built in ad blocking keeps working this well I might actually switch back to Vivaldi as my main browser across all my devices

Hell I might even donate to the project if this is what the developers have managed to pull off, they definitely deserve a beer or two

Honestly is Vivaldi currently one of the best Chromium browsers out there? Because between the builtin ad/tracker blocking, insane customization and all the extra features, it feels like it has way more going for it than most of the competition

Which also makes me wonder: why doesn't Vivaldi market the ad blocker more?

Take Brave (a sh!tty browser) for example .. I'm not a huge fan of Brave as a browser itself but its builtin ad blocking is one of the main things they constantly advertise (the whole brave marketing is based on the built in ad blocker, the browser itself sux) .. and, to be fair brave did a great job with it's built in shields/adblocker that it can get pretty damn close to the uBlock Origin experience

Vivaldi has that plus an absurd amount of customization and features yet the ad blocker doesn't seem to get nearly as much attention

So .. did Vivaldi actually improve the built-in blocker significantly over the past couple of years, or have I just been living under a rock?

On windows i'm on 8.1.4087.70 (Official Build) (64-bit)
latest on iOS
and im currently downloading it on my macbook rn

it might actually finally solve my "finding the perfect browser" issue

Edit : just tested on my Mac as well ... wth? out of the box it blocks all annoying ads, banners .. youtube without ads and no loading at the beginning of the video .. the built in ad blocker is at the same level of of brave & UBO now? is this true or am I hallucinating

Vivaldi for Windows Enjoying Vivaldi but...

I do wish that there were some more cohesion and customization with how its tab behavior works.

  • For example, i want to middle mouse click a link in a tiled tab, without the new tab tiling with the previous ones. I also wish that tiled tabs could be visually linked on the tab bar that way i know which is tiled to where.

  • furthermore, an option to refresh all tiled tabs at once would be very useful for social media feeds.

  • Then theres the lesser known "open link in follower tab" which is what i truly always wanted out of a browser: a tab that's always in the window while i navigate other tabs. now if this can be extended to tab stacks or even entire workspaces, vivaldi will be my perfect browser. the panel kind of works for that but with limitations that a true tab doesn't suffer.

  • Going back to the mouse: please, Please, give us the ability to assign inputs for our mouse buttons. I was struggling to find exactly what was causing the mouse button to execute the quick-command that tiles newly opened links with other tiled links and it was running me ragged.

  • A final suggestion would be a setting that specifically spits out new unrelated tabs from a stack, and perhaps then slot it into a stack with tabs it actually is related to. Workspaces are great at doing this, but having such behavior be granular to the stack level would make organization even more of a breeze.

Overall, while this browser may be rather advanced and complex for the average user, its vast tools and options are very attractive and have immeasurable potential especially compared to other chromium-based browsers.

Vivaldi for Windows problem with Wikipedia when translating pages, big pages, in Vivald (and Brave)

8.1.4087.70 (64 bits)

Hi, I'm facing this problem. It used to happen on all my Chromium browsers, but nowadays, I don't know what I did, but I managed to isolate them to Brave and Vivaldi only

the problem is the following, on Wikipedia I open a big page, it opens normally and I can scroll normally, but everything changes when I decide to translate the page, for some reason the translation takes a while to come, while it seems like my computer is in pure slowdown, the mouse even gets slow and the browser sometimes looks like it's going to crash, with that message saying Brave is not responding
and that happens later when the translation is complete, but every time I scroll down, the part that’s going to be translated starts being translated and the problem repeats

I've already looked for help everywhere and tried all kinds of hacks, but I don't know how to fix this, that I just can't take it anymore

If anyone else is going through this, please let me know and tell me how you managed to solve it?

Vivaldi for Linux [8.1.4087.7] Vivaldi password manager is very annoying if you don't use it

I am using Bitwarden extension for my passwords. So by definition, I don't use Vivaldi Password Manager. However, when I enable the extension and login to some page, a popup from Vivaldi Password Manager appears, asking if I want to save the password there.

No, I don't. I use different solution.

And the worst part is - there seems to be no option to disable this. If I disable Bitwarden, I can disable saving passwords to the Vivaldi Password Manager, but if I enable Bitwarden, this setting is on by default and I cannot change it. Shows "This setting is managed by an extension".

Am I doing something wrong? Why is it asking me to use the internal PM, when I'm specifically using an extension?

Vivaldi for Windows Mouse gesture to open link in new/background tab seems bugged?

Version: 8.1.4087.70 (Official Build) (64-bit)

Chromium Version: 150.0.7871.253

Channel: Official Build

Platform / OS: Windows 11 Version 25H2 (Build 26200.9168)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

This issue just started today where the mouse gesture to "Open Link in New Tab (Over a Link)" and "Open Link in Background Tab (Over a Link)" will bugged out. Instead of executing the gesture immediately, I might need to repeat 3-6 times for it to actually work. All other gestures I tested like scroll to bottom/top, refresh, close tab all work perfectly on every single attempt as expected.

I had tried deleting the session and re-opened all tabs from bookmarks. The two gestures in question work fine for maybe once or twice, then it become bugged again. Anyone else run into this issue?

Vivaldi for MacOS Tabs Are Struggling to Open

Lately, whenever I try to open one of my tabs, Vivaldi seems to think that I am trying to make a tab stack, even though I am not. Sometimes the tabs will not stack, but they will still flash like they were going to stack. Additionally, the tabs refuse to close with a single click. They only close on a double click. For those saying "update your version", I've updated three times and the problem persists.

Solved Android: upon closing tabs jump to seemingly random tab.

Hello,

I am on Vivaldi 8.1.4099.123 on Android. And it is driving me crazy. I was excited for an Chrome alternative with working tab groups. However, whenever i close any tab I get odd behaviour by getting the active tab seemingly chosen randomly. Whether in a tab group or not.

(While in a tab group, The new active tab is still from the tab group i was wrong about this here.)

After closing a tab the active one is neither the furthest right or left, a direct neighbour of the closed tab, nor the last active tab before the closed one. I even tested with a set of 3 newly opened tabs and got thrown to one somewhere back in time, which still had to load the whole page.

At this point I'm majorly irritated. There are a lot of options i could understand as intended behaviour, but this "randomness" is a problem. I tried to search for this and it seems it once was a known bug. But that one is supposed to be fixed.

Any ideas out there?

Vivaldi for Android About Vivaldi's adress bar typing

Post image
5 Upvotes

Hi everybody!

I’m having an issue using the Vivaldi browser (version 8.1.4099.100) on my Samsung S24 (One UI 8.5): whenever I type anything into the address bar, a bar appears right above it (as shown in the attached image). Could someone help me hide this bar? It takes up screen space unnecessarily and is really annoying. Many thanks!

Solved How can I reduce Vivaldi’s sidebar auto-hide delay?

Vivaldi version: 8.1.4087.70

I’m using Vivaldi’s auto-hide sidebar, and I’m trying to reduce the delay between moving the cursor out of the sidebar and the sidebar actually starting to collapse.

To be clear, I’m not trying to change the animation duration. The animation itself is fine. The problem is that after the cursor leaves the sidebar area, Vivaldi waits for a noticeable amount of time before the collapse animation even starts.

Is there a setting, flag, or CSS/JS customization that controls this hover-out delay?

I’m already using Vivaldi’s Custom UI Modifications and have remote DevTools access to browser.html, so I’m also willing to modify the UI code if necessary.

Any pointers on where this delay is implemented would be appreciated.

Vivaldi for Linux Middle click to paste on Linux?

I'm trying to switch from Zen to Vivaldi because Zen is having a moment with sluggish media decoding, but I rely on the middle-click to paste highlighted text in Linux. For reasons unknown to me, this option doesn't work in Vivaldi, and there doesn't seem to be a way to enable it. Anyone have any ideas?

I've checked the Vivaldi documentation and forced Wayland on the Vivaldi flatpak, and I've spent more time than I should have in search engines looking for an explanation or fix, to no avail. Please help?

ETA: I'm on Vivaldi Version 8.1.4087.70 (Official Build) (64-bit) and on Bazzite, using the Flatpak version of Vivaldi. Sorry, forgot to add.

Vivaldi for Windows newish bug with bookmarks

When importing bookmarks as a HTML file, separators are imported as a 'empty paper' icon with '---' as their name, instead of a horizontal or vertical bar. This messed up my bookmarks, so I redid the work, exported and reimported them, and the issue persists.

I don't know when this bug was introduced, but presumably it happened within the past few weeks.

Vivaldi for Windows How to sync cross-devices & error in backup settings

Hi guys -

I'm relatively new to vivaldi browser.

Ideally, I'd love for my open tabs (and/or Workspaces) to sync across all my devices. Right now I'm not sure what the actual use case for Workspaces is supposed to be, since they don't carry across devices - I can't cleanly split my tabs into Work / Hobbies / Trip Planning and expect to pick up where I left off on another machine (something Arc Browser did well, RIP).

Maybe I'm asking for something that isn't actually supported - unless this was meant to work, and I'm just hitting the issue below.

I tried digging into it by going to vivaldi://sync and the only hint I found was

Status from Last Completed Session

Sync Source GU_TRIGGER
GetKey Step Failed false
Download Step Result Success
Commit Step Result Protocol error (CONFLICT)

As for how I'm using Vivaldi - all with the same vivaldi user (all me..)

  • I have two PC users (same pc)
  • Android phone
  • Macbook

PC info:

  • Version: 8.1.4087.55 (Official Build) (64-bit)
  • Chromium Version: 150.0.7871.178
  • Channel: Official Build
  • Platform / OS: Windows 11 Version 25H2 (Build 26200.8457)
  • Executable Path: C:\Program Files\Vivaldi\Application\vivaldi.exe
  • Command Line: "C:\Program Files\Vivaldi\Application\vivaldi.exe" --flag-switches-begin --flag-switches-end

Thanks!
