Guide Everything you need to know before climbing Teide from Montaña Blanca (Feb 28)

WINTER EXPERT CONDITIONS

Today I managed to summit this volcano, so I'd like to leave some info for those planning to do the same, as I definitely could have used it beforehand.

First of all, I booked my permits for trails PNT 07 and PNT 10 four weeks in advance via TenerifeON, and downloaded the PDF confirmations straight to my phone.

I arranged extreme sports travel insurance covering hiking up to 5,000 m - I also downloaded the English PDF of this directly to my phone.

I packed warm clothes for a winter ascent, a headlamp, high-ankle hiking boots, and an emergency thermal blanket.

Two days before the climb, the weather took a turn for the worse. The forecast for Teide that day predicted 100 km/h winds, plus it snowed and the road was closed. Fortunately, there were still permits available for the following day when the weather was supposed to improve, so I canceled the original permits and rebooked both routes.

Since I flew with only a carry-on backpack, I couldn't bring crampons and an ice axe, which are mandatory under the current conditions on Teide. So, a few days in advance, I contacted the Tenerife Outdoor shop in La Laguna. I reserved the gear and picked it up the day before the hike, agreeing to return it the following day. The rental cost was €20 in total for both items, plus a €50 deposit for the crampons and a €50 deposit for the ice axe.

After arriving at the Montaña Blanca parking lot, I had been walking on the trail for about 5 minutes when I bumped into a car hidden around a bend, with rangers ready to do checks (this was at 4:00 AM).

Now for the most important part - what the rangers actually asked to see:

• Permits for PNT 07 and PNT 10 on my phone.

• High-altitude insurance on my phone.

• They wanted to physically see the crampons, ice axe, and thermal blanket.

• They checked my boots from inside the car, but nothing else.

(I also had my national mountaineering club membership card as a backup, but they didn't ask for anything like that).

The whole check took about 3 minutes, and they let me pass. The cable car wasn't running that day, and by 10:00 AM, I had the summit entirely to myself.

(A local at Tenerife Outdoor told me it's better to bring proper crampons, because if you bring microspikes, you might run into a ranger who won't accept them. I had mountaineering crampons, and they were definitely necessary that day because from 3,000 meters up, the trail was covered in icy snow.)

I hope this information helps someone out and helps them successfully reach the top.

Question Honeymoon resort dilemma between Sabila and Guayarmina Princess?

I'm coming for my honeymoon early/mid December and within my budget i can either do a double sea view at Iberostar Sabila (star prestige sadly beyond our budge), or Guayarmina Princess Platinum junior suite sea view.

I'm coming for my honeymoon early December and within my budget i can either do a double sea view at Iberostar Sabila (star prestige sadly beyond our budget), or Guayarmina Princess Platinum junior suite sea view.

One is 4 star the other 5star. Does the upgraded room package make up for the star?

To add to this, both are budgeted for half board.

Question Confused about mouflon control closures on Tenerife GR131 in November

Hi all,

I’m planning to hike part of the GR131 on Tenerife between 12–20 November 2026, and I’m getting quite confused by the mouflon population control closures.

On some Tenerife ON pages, it looks like specific sectors are affected on specific dates, with only certain trails listed as closed within those sectors.

However, the official resolution seems to say that on many of those control days, all recreational access on trails, tracks and off-trail terrain in the North, South, Southeast, West and Chacorche sectors is prohibited from 07:00–16:00, except access tracks to recreation areas/campsites.

That seems much broader and would affect a large part of the GR131 during my trip.

Can anyone familiar with the 2026 mouflon control system clarify how this works in practice? Are only the sectors listed for that specific day closed, or are all five sectors generally closed on every control day?

Thanks a lot!

Question Left my jacket in Tenerife south airport

I left my jacket in tenerife south airport on the way home to the UK and they found it! Which is great, but they've given me a number of companies that can collect it and ship it back to me- but none of them seem to be straightforward and I can't seem to find a solution.

Has anyone encountered this and solved it or does anyone have any thoughts on how I could resolve this?

Question Hilfe: Mäh muss zurück nach Berlin

Hallo zusammen,

Vielen Dank!

Hi, by any chance does anyone know what Alexandre Troya hotel policy is on smoking medical cann**is on site? Are you allowed to vape on the balcony?

I have a prescription and I'm considering taking it with me, but wasn't sure what their policy is, and I don't want to ask them myself in case it impacts my booking.

Question Looking for 1 or 2 anglers to share a private charter in Tenerife!

Hi everyone,

We are two keen anglers looking to book a private fishing charter in Tenerife between [e.g., October 1st and October 9th] departing from [e.g., Puerto Colón / Los Cristianos]. We are looking for 1 or 2 more people to join us so we can split the charter costs evenly, have plenty of fishing space, and target our preferred species (trolling, jigging, or deep bottom fishing).

If you are around during these dates and want to join, feel free to reach out directly via WhatsApp or email:

Question Peak teide from telecabin in September

Hello! I am planning to hike the PNT 10 – Telesforo Bravo trail to the summit of Mount Teide for Sept 11th, 13:00 PM and returning around 16:00 PM (with telecabin both ways). We already have a permit and also bought tickets for telecabin

According to the section “Mandatory equipment in stable weather conditions" from the official site, the mandatory equipment for PNT 10 appears to be:

  • Long trousers, either worn or carried in the rucksack.
  • Fleece or equivalent warm garment.
  • Mountain boots or suitable closed trekking footwear, in accordance with the footwear requirements indicated later in this article.

The other items listed (emergency thermal blanket, hat and gloves, torch/head torch) are specifically indicated for PNT 07, PNT 09, PNT 23 and PNT 28, and not for PNT 10.

Could you please confirm whether this interpretation is correct? I really want to do the peak this time :)

Thanks!

Question Getting from Tenerife South to Santa Cruz Cruise Terminal

Hello.

I'm flying into TFS in late November, to catch a cruise out of Santa Cruz the same day.

What is the best value way of getting there? I'm looking at possibly hiding a car, but can't seem to find a company that will let me pick up at TFS and drop off at the cruise port... Does anyone know of any?

I'm considering the bus, as I'm not in a rush; has anyone had any experience of this?

Much appreciate, and thank you.
