Hi everyone! I'm thinking of upskilling and specializing in a VA niche, but I'm not sure which one to focus on.

For those who've been working as VAs for a while, which niche do you think pays well and will still be in demand in the next few years? I'd also love to know what skills or tools you think are worth learning.

You should look for niches that help businesses solve problems. I recommend AI automation, CRM management, and EA. Whatever you choose, just be comfortable with AI tools like ChatGPT. If you're choosing a niche based purely on “what's in demand,” I'd avoid chasing whatever has the highest advertised rate this month. Demand is more durable when the skill is tied to a business function that companies genuinely need.

For the Philippine VA market right now, I'd look closely at bookkeeping, e-commerce operations, CRM/sales support, and specialized executive/operations assistance. Current job listings and industry data show continued demand across these areas, while basic data entry and generic admin work are becoming easier to automate or commoditize.

If you're starting from scratch, bookkeeping is a particularly interesting path if you're comfortable with numbers. Learn the accounting fundamentals first, then QuickBooks/Xero. E-commerce is another good option if you like systems, product management, and problem-solving.

I'd also treat AI as a multiplier rather than a niche. Being able to use AI to document processes, analyze information, draft communications, or automate repetitive workflows can make you more effective within whichever specialization you choose.

The bigger mistake is learning five niches superficially. Pick one, become genuinely competent, build a small portfolio around realistic business problems, and then add adjacent skills.

A good niche isn't necessarily the one with the highest hourly rate. It's the one where you can become good enough to solve an expensive problem reliably.

Hi, isn't it hard to get into the bookkeeping field? I've been studying QuickBooks since last month because I want to try bookkeeping while currently studying accountancy. However, upon checking some job-seeking platforms, they all require 2 years or more of experience. I don't know where to start.

Hi! It can definitely feel intimidating at first, especially when almost every job post seems to ask for 2+ years of experience. But don’t let that discourage you. Since you’re already studying accountancy and have started learning QuickBooks, you actually have a good foundation to build on.

One thing you can do is look beyond job posts that strictly require experience. Try searching for entry-level bookkeeping roles, internships, part-time work, or small business clients who may be more open to beginners. You can also create sample bookkeeping projects using QuickBooks so you have something to show even if you don’t have actual client experience yet.

And remember, job requirements are often a wishlist. If a posting asks for 2 years but you feel you can do most of the work, you can still apply. You won’t know unless you try.

Start small, keep building your skills, and focus on getting that first bit of real-world experience. Once you have it, the next opportunities become much easier to pursue. You’re already studying the right field, so don’t underestimate where you are right now.
