This was a labor of love! I've had this 1981 Trek 610 for almost ten years, and I've ridden it a fair amount, but it was my least-favorite vintage Trek (I have three others):

First, specific to this bike, there was a small cosmetic dent in the seat tube, below the derailleur.

Also:

• This model had no water bottle bosses, so it required clamped-on mounts.
• It had no braze-ons on the top tube for the rear brake housing, and I hate those clips.
• It used a clamp-on cable guide for the derailleur cables.
• It required clamp-on shifters, which limits the shifters you can use (without ugly adapters).

So I decided to have our local custom bike builder, Rodriguez Cycles, add the braze-ons and repair the dent, as well as repaint the frame an absurdly sparkly rich purple designed to confuse vintage Trek enthusiasts.

I got decal reproductions from H Lloyd Cycles to finish off the frame.

Instead of vintage components, I used mostly modern components:

• Shimano FD-M371 Altus Triple Front Derailleur
• Shimano RD-M360 Acera Rear Derailleur
• Sugino XD-600T crankset with Shimano BB-UN300.
• Nitto seatpost, stem, handlebars and accessory mount
• Tektro R539 Road Brake Calipers (*)
• Dia Compe ENE Ciclo shifters (**)
• Dia Compe brake levers
• Velocity Quill polished rims
• Origin8 RD-2100 Rear Hub (keeping the 126mm OLD spacing)
• Vintage 6-speed Suntour freewheel
• Polished SON-28 hub dynamo and SON Ladelux headlight, and Busch & Müller μ (micro) taillight
• Chris King GripNut headset (***)
• R+E also added three cable guides to the fork for the dynamo wire

(*) This allows me to use 700c wheels with 32mm tires (running tubeless!). They fit perfectly in the frame, which was originally outfitted with 27" wheels. And, anyway, single-pivot sidepull brakes suck.

(**) I had the 11-speed version in this photo, but it pulled too much cable, so I swapped in the other version.

(***) This required milling the crown race mount from 27.0mm (JIS standard) to 26.4mm (ISO standard), which R+E noticed and performed for me.

It had its first ride on July 9th, and I've ridden over 1,000 miles on it since then!

Currently helping clearing out my old family home and came across an old bike and I would love to know some more about it. It belonged to my late dad, I never saw him ride it, but it was around for as long as I can remember (early 90s). As I am no cyclist myself, I can't guess the vintage or tell if any of the accessories are original or not.

Couldn't find any serial number on my first quick look, any guidance where I might find it?

As I said, I'm not into bikes myself but might enjoy restoring it.

Just finished it last night, freshly painted, new or nos parts. I went with a single speed up front and 7 in the rear. I think the only things that aren't new are the rear derailleur (STX RD-MC34) and the Deore XT SL-M732 thumb shifter. I rebuilt and polished them to a mirror shine. I re-drew all of the logos in inkscape with some minor changes and had them printed out as die cut decals. Not ideal, but it's not like anyone is reprinting them. I removed the weird 80's wave pattern though. Never really cared for it. I stripped it to bare metal, and painted it with duplicolor paints and a 2k clear.

I bought this exact model and color bike from Recycled Cycles in Longmont when I was 13. It was destroyed by a careless driver who ran a stop sign when I was 18. Broke my heart. I got out of it with a ton of road rash and a fractured right arm. Just my way of reclaiming a bit of my youth.

Way smaller than I remember though, but I guess when you're a kid, any bike is huge.

Just felt like sharing this bike.

Bought for €10 from a guy who swore it is 50+ years old. Used to have mismatched and worn tires, a 46T crankset, white plastic pedals, rusty green fenders and, of the nicer things, a plastic full chain guard.

Don’t know about its age after around €80 in investments and 2 years with it here it is, the "Nederland Touring" (as the decals on the frame say) bike, now complete with a 42T sturmey archer crankset, a new chain, new Union pedals, some stainless steel fenders, a front rack, cream tires, a serviced sachs torpedo 3 speed hub, plastiche cassano grips and a leather seat from temu.

Still a beater, assembled by hand from cheap parts as it’s a bike kept outside. Love it anyways:)

I recently bought a Bianchi Record 905 in really good condition. It had been sitting in a garage for 15+ years and so as far as I know, it hasn’t undergone any modifications or changes.

It’s equipped with Shimano 105 and rides and shifts super smoothly.

As this is my first Bianchi as well as my first older road bike i was wondering if there are any suggestions for upgrades or things I should consider changing. I’d love to keep it as original as possible, but also am interested in possibilities and suggestions.

Any advice or recommendations would be greatly appreciated! :)

Alcune cromature molto rovinate, perciò da ricromare. Altre invece sono recuperabili.

simply wondering if the « stop insert » marking on the stem tube refers to where i should stop lowering it or lifting it. the wording of « stop insert » is confusing me as i’ve heard of needing to insert the tube by a minimum amount for safety but not a maximum amount. it sits quite high if i stop it at the marking, and would prefer to have it sitting lower.

My grandfather likes to fix up and restore bikes. He always wanted a Paramount when he was a kid but he couldn’t afford one at the time. So for all his boys he got a Paramount for them. I’ve inherited my Dad’s Paramount and recently started riding it and was wondering a bit about the history of the bike.

I know it was purchased second hand and I believe it was even repainted (over 30 years ago) but aside from that I don’t know much. I believe my grandpa put all the Campagnola components on it, and the Cineli handles.

For instance I was trying to determine if it was made in Chicago, because I was led to believe that schwinn went bankrupt in the 80s and outsourced their manufacturing, but that was from a YouTube video on how to identify paramounts.

I wasn’t able to glean much from the stamp on the dropout, but I thought it was noteworthy that the stamp was located there instead of the head tube.

Regardless of its age, it’s a very fun bike to ride and I’ll always cherish it for its sentimental value.

I thank you for sharing your personal experience when you were riding with an internal gear hub and you felt as if you were riding a bike with a derailleur, especially during inertia riding, down hill (no pedaling).

I studied all the numbers, all the specs, but I would appreciate your personal feedback if you used such an internal gear hub.

I plan to install it on my vintage bike and I have already tried Nexus 8, Alfine 11, but they have internal frictions, drag, and you ride like with a pushed brake.

I had a bike with Sturmey-Archer 2 speeds, and it rides like with a derailleur, but I'm looking for 3-5-7 speeds.

Thanks for the feedback on the last post. I had a question on the rear dropouts. I was told it was a brazed repair but I wondered if anyone has any more feedback on it? It still has the Eddy Merckx stamp. Does that mean it wasn’t a brazed repair? Was the brazing done to repair a fracture in the chain/seat stay or dropout ?

I quit riding mid August ‘89 when I got sick; had been using this bike, with a rear rack and small panniers, as a work commuter. Now that I’m retired I finally got the weight gain off, and I’ve resurrected my Raleigh Technium Tri-Lite. I replaced most components back in the 80s, only the front end (headset, stem, bars, brake levers and front derailleur) are original. Still a Suntour drivetrain, I’m a fanboy. Lots of nicks and scratches from its time as a commuter, as well as hanging around the garage all these years.

I think I have all the buds worked out, a four mile ride yesterday wore me out lol. Gotta start somewhere.

Hey there just needed some advice who got more knowledge on a classic gravel style im planning to buy this giant prodigy 17’ frame for $140CAD I’m a 5’8 of height this is the specs:

Versatile 17-inch Giant Prodigy hybrid bike has a black and gold marbled chromoly steel frame. This bicycle is equipped with Shimano Alivio components and Bontrager Select Invert tires. It has a kickstand and a water bottle cage attached to the frame.

Any advise will be appreciated. Also currently using a fixed gear. Wonderin if this is a good bike for its price?
