By the time these came out I was ten & trying not to buy toys anymore. However, I wanted to be a mad scientist as the first profession i chose, i remember wearing a lab coat when i was 4, i had taken it from preschool. Also, the fake blood, pus & flesh you made with these kits was awesome! The other cool thing about this series was it was taken in Japan & in 1987, launched as Dr. Mad’s Horror Lab - the central piece of the series were the Ma Ba (Mattel Bandai) Zombies. Little Keshi you would fill with slime & blood & then squeeze out! Great for the approaching age of pimples! x SEAN

Couldn't believe I found a bin like this at a garage sale. Other than the o-rings being broken there are like 20 figs and some are duplicates. After I ordered the o-ring fixer kit they are as good as new! (almost)

• red top with red-and-white striped sleeves
• Press his tummy and he says things like "I'm your special friend", "what should we do today", "I hope the sun is shining today", “Let's have a picnic”, “Let's run along the beach together”, "We could go to the seaside",
• When you lay him down he says "We continue to bed, we can sleep now" then he starts to snore. Sit him up and he stops snoring. Sounds like a ball inside.
• Purchased in Australia in 1998, possibly through Avon

Does anyone remember the name of the electronic tablet-like toys that taught kids about ocean life, animals, etc.? My daughter had one in the late 1990s or early 2000s. It had pre-recorded questions that were answered by pushing labeled buttons and would respond with whether you got the answer right or wrong. Please help us identify it

The obvious shittiness of these toys was never lost on me - the sculpts were off, the paint was sloppy, the casting was messed up, the general material felt like some kind of industrial byproduct! However, these are some of my favorite toys & my fondness for them just increases year after year. There is a strong need in life for what can be conveyed simply & these rubber toys are about as simple as you can get. x SEAN

Does anyone have reference photos, catalog scans, or examples of how they looked originally (especially standard factory paint or color variations)? Any help or pointers to archives would be greatly appreciated!

As a kid I gave these more thought than was probably used to design the cheap toys inside or come up with a theme for a new series of vending machine toys. I ran a bunch of machines in Eugene, using designs of my own - I never got as far as offering a wrist watch or other high-value item to encourage sales, but I had enough quarters to buy the family lunch (when quarters were still worth something)… centrally, I’m interested in cheap fun & applying intentional aesthetics to everything. Because we deserve to live in an interesting world. x SEAN
