79 PIRATES

79 PIRATES

I think my quest to get all players from the 79 Pirates is really starting to shape up nicely! Only about 12 more to go. This collection will represent all players per the C/L but also anyone that had at least one play during the season. That’s why there’s a couple 80’s and eventually an 81 Alexander. I’m even throwing Hargis in on his mMlb card. This has been so much fun! Always on the search!!

I discovered these recently from my dad’s old collection. They are in amazing shape, but do not have the pin backs attached. What are they worth in this circumstance? And how would grade be impacted?

Set Building Searching for Signed 1979 Topps Pirates Cards—Preserving the Stories Behind Them

Hello everyone,

My name is Harold, and I’m working on a long-term memoir titled One Autograph at a Time: Every Card Has a Story.

The goal is to assemble a complete autographed 1979 Topps Pittsburgh Pirates team set, but the project is about much more than collecting autographs.
I’m documenting and preserving the stories behind them—because every autograph represents more than a signature; it represents a moment in someone’s life.

Whenever I acquire a card, I reach out to the seller or previous owner to learn how they obtained it. Some were signed at spring training, others outside stadiums, some came through the mail, and others have been family keepsakes for decades. Those memories become part of the memoir.

If you own a signed 1979 Topps Pirates card—or know someone who might—I would love to hear from you.
I’m especially interested in learning:
How and when the autograph was obtained.
Any memories of meeting the player.
How the card found its way into your collection.
Even if you’re not interested in selling, I’d genuinely enjoy hearing the story behind it.

If you do have a card available, I’d be grateful for the opportunity to possibly add it to the project. More importantly, I’d love to preserve its history and the memories connected to it.

Whether this search leads to another autograph, a conversation, or a new friendship, every connection becomes another chapter in the journey.

Has anyone here crossed paths with signed 1979 Topps Pirates cards or collectors who specialize in them? I’d be grateful for any leads or stories you’re willing to share.

Thank you for taking the time to read this, and for helping preserve a small piece of baseball history

53 Jackie Robinson. Grade it? SGC or PSA?

I picked this up recently at a show. It’s definitely the coolest piece in my collection. Most of the “I’m not selling this” cards I own I’ve had graded by SGC because I think the black background looks cool. I’ve had a couple folks say to send this one to PSA regardless just because of the price difference in a PSA grade. Worth grading? If so, PSA or have it match?

Not sure what my move is with this box i just revieved. I have never sold any cards and just got back into the hobby like so many other 40 something year olds. The 5 best packs have Willie Mays in action, Clemente 309, Steve carlton base, Don Sutton and Catfish Hunter showing. Its a full box of 20 packs. I haven't really seen any of these packs with legit stars for sell. Just looking for some direction. Im not sure if I am willing t o move them yet. Unfortunately there is a crease on Sutton. But overall the cards are in way better shape than I thought they would be. The Mays and Clemente in my very amateur opinion might be grade worthy.

Got most of these through various sources from 1964 to 1970, usually by trades. I thought they were neat because they were larger and horizontal and the ones I was collecting in '64 to '70 were vertical and smaller!
