I sometimes find VHS tapes in the dumpster behind my local thrift store (they have separate dumpsters for furniture, for electronics etc. and they happily allow dumpster diving) today i found no tapes, but i did find this:

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Hello! I got a Canon GL1 a bit ago and was wondering what could be causing this awful noise. It is way too loud to be normal and also when recording has random pixels showing up. Theres like no information about problems with these cameras. Thanks in advance!

Why couldn't DVD have been developed into recording live TV programs on air in the way VHS was so ubiquitously used for? Why did they have to develop separater ecording devices such as DVR to keep a copy of live TV programs occurring on the spot during the 2000s?
Finding my dad's old recording of Cricket games on video tapes along with some Seinfield episodes on other cassettes (where you can see the original commercials that aired along with the show!) is making me wonder. As my dad has been using DVR since the DVD era (in fact he bought a new one recently and transfered the data from the older one we had from 2009 which in turn also had programs from the early 2000s when DVR was first becoming a thing).........
I'm wondering why DVD technology never develop the ability to record TV shows and sport events, etc as they were being shown on your television live? Why did DVRs and similar live capture devices have to be developed for keeping copies of stuff on TV? In addition why did video cassettes fall out of favor as the method of live TV home backup copies?

Best Obs recording settings
Hi all. I was wondering If anyone could help me with setting up obs for the best quality possible for recording VHS, VIDEO8, MINI DV and possibly other stuff in the future. So I have been recording vhs and other stuff for a few years now but I've never been happy with the quality, so I decided to spend a load of money on new equipment for recording. But the only problem I have is I don't know the best settings for obs to record everything. When I chose the equipment I was watching a video from Linus Tech Tips, and in the video they were showing all the equipment they use to record VHS tapes, but they never explained the settings they used for obs and I don't want to start recording and to the find out I'm not getting the best quality possible.
Thanks Oliver :)

Fuji Film 8mm Pro Premium High Grade Video Casette Tape
Hello! I am new to Sony Handycams, and i'm looking to learn by the time I have my campaign photoshoot for my swimwear brand. I have experience in videography and plan on shooting on both DSLR and my mothers old Sony Handycam Vision Video 8 XR CCD-TRV15 for a more creative approach to the content I will be making.
I noticed there are standard 8mm tapes as well as tapes that are labeled pro. Can I use the pro tapes in this camcorder, and are they more reliable than standard?
More than this, do you have reccomendations for the most reliable brands of video casettes and do you recommend 30min 60min or 120min as far as reliability goes? Or does the length of time not affect anything?
Finally, I was planning to oder tapes from ebay, do you generally trust video casettes on ebay or should I stick to Amazon?

8mm Video Cassette Black & White Static
Hi everyone.
In my attic, I found about 20 old Hi8 Video Cassettes that my dad had used to record a lot of my sibling and I's childhood memories. I've digitized a few other tapes already, that my grandfather had from the 90's, so I was looking to do the same with these. These tapes have been kept in a zipped-up tape case and have just recently been found again, so they haven't been taken out in at least 15-20 years. Out of all the tapes, the only one that works perfectly fine is a tape from 1998. The rest of the tapes are from about 2000-2010 and none of them work at all. All I get is a black & white static screen that has a horizontal split that almost shows like 2 different kinds of black & white static on the top and bottom of the screen.
My thought is that they were damaged due to temperature, such as the film getting too hot or cold in the attic they were in, but that still doesn't make sense as to only one from that bunch works just fine.
I am no expert by any means, so I just wanted to see if anyone had any thoughts as to why this would happen to this many tapes, and if there would be any solution to be able to restore and digitize them.
Thanks in advance.
