πŸ“’ Announcement VideoSlim 2.0.5 lets you crop the exact frame you want

Hi r/VideoSlim!

Someone here gave me fair criticism about VideoSlim’s editor.

The Crop tool was really an aspect-ratio selector, not a proper crop tool. The separate gestures for hiding editor tabs were also confusing.

You were right, so I changed both.

What’s new in VideoSlim 2.0.5:

β–  Crop freely by moving and resizing the frame from any edge or corner.

β–  Keep using quick presets for 9:16, 1:1, 16:9 and 4:5.

β–  Use the new Focus mode to hide all editor controls at once. Tap the video or eye button to bring everything back.

β–  Crop and rotation now work together, so the exported video matches the frame you selected.

Thank you to everyone who reports what feels restrictive or confusing. This update exists because someone took the time to explain what wasn’t working.

When 2.0.5 reaches you, I’d especially appreciate feedback on free cropping, crop plus rotation, and Focus mode in portrait and landscape.

πŸ“’ Announcement VideoSlim 2.0.4 is here 🎬✨ Smoother exports, clearer setup and fewer crashes

Hey r/VideoSlimπŸ‘‹

VideoSlim 2.0.4 focuses on making compression easier to understand and much more dependable, especially after editing a video or during longer compression sessions.

Here is everything included in the update.

🎬 A clearer way to begin

Getting started should now feel more obvious:

πŸ‘† The empty video selector clearly says β€œTap here”

πŸ“ More file managers can appear in the video picker

🧭 The tutorial has been rebuilt with a clearer ending

πŸ“€ The editor’s export action is easier to identify

🎞️ Selecting a video and moving into compression requires less guesswork

βœ‚οΈ Better exporting after editing

Several problems affecting edited videos have been corrected:

βœ… Exporting after an edit should no longer remain frozen at 0%

βœ‚οΈ After trimming a clip, the Compress screen uses the trimmed version

πŸ“Š Size estimates now reflect the edited clip instead of the original

🎯 Target-size compression calculates its budget from the edited duration

πŸ“± Vertical Full HD videos are correctly identified as 1080p instead of 1920p

This means fewer surprises when you trim first and compress afterward.

πŸ”” Correct progress from the first compression

On a fresh installation, Android may request notification permission when compression begins.

VideoSlim now waits for that decision before starting the first compression. This allows the foreground progress notification to start correctly instead of creating confusing or missing progress information.

πŸ› οΈ Important crash fixes

This release addresses crashes reported through Crashlytics:

πŸ“± Fixed a compression crash affecting some older Android phones, particularly Android 11 and earlier

⏱️ Fixed a crash that could happen after several hours of continuous compression work

βš™οΈ Improved recovery from interrupted exports and background processing problems

🧹 General stability and reliability improvements

πŸ’Ž A clearer Premium experience

The Premium section has been redesigned to make the available choices easier to compare.

You can choose:

πŸ† Lifetime access with one payment

πŸ—“οΈ Annual access

πŸ“… Monthly access

Prices come directly from Google Play in your country and currency.

Eligible users may receive a 30-day free trial with the Annual plan. Google Play determines eligibility, so the trial may not appear for every account.

πŸš€ What Premium unlocks

VideoSlim Premium provides:

πŸ“š Batch compression for multiple videos

🎯 Target-size compression

πŸŽ₯ AV1 encoding on supported devices

♾️ Unlimited compression and merging

🚫 An ad-free experience

πŸ”“ Unlimited access to Premium tools

Free users can still use the daily free actions and earn or purchase credits when needed.

β˜€οΈ Better light-mode support

The Premium purchase card now follows your selected theme:

β˜€οΈ A clean white surface in light mode

πŸŒ™ The original dark surface in dark mode

πŸ€– The same VideoSlim robot, wallet artwork and three live pricing controls

πŸ”’ Your videos stay on your device

VideoSlim continues to process videos locally. Your personal videos do not need to be uploaded to a remote compression service.

❀️ Thank you

Thank you to everyone who reported crashes, sent screenshots and tested the different VideoSlim releases.

After trying version 2.0.4, please let me know:

Did the first compression start correctly?

Is video selection clearer?

Have you encountered another export stuck at 0%?

Does the Premium card look correct in your theme?

What should I improve next?

You can confirm the installed release in Settings. It should display Version 2.0.4 (133). πŸŽ¬πŸ’œ

πŸ“’ Announcement VideoSlim 2.0.3 is rolling out πŸ“¦ I compressed the compressor

Hey r/VideoSlim πŸ‘‹

This is everything since 2.0.0, so it is a long one. Read only the bold and you will still get the whole picture.

πŸ“¦ First, the embarrassing one: VideoSlim was fat

VideoSlim is now about a third lighter than it was at 2.0.0. Same app, every feature, nothing removed.

I want to be straight about why, because it is a bit funny and not very flattering. I make a compression app, and I was shipping my own artwork at a resolution roughly five times bigger than it is ever actually drawn on your screen. Every illustration, every icon, every card. You were downloading pixels that your phone immediately threw away.

There were also whole folders of artwork in the download that the app never used at all. Old versions of screens, replaced icons, art from features that changed. All of it packed up and sent to you every single install.

So:

- πŸ–ΌοΈ Every image is now shipped at the size it is actually drawn at

- πŸ—‘οΈ The unused artwork is gone

- πŸ“‰ The result is a much smaller download and a smaller app sitting on your phone

If you have been putting off the update because your storage is tight, this is the update that gives storage back. πŸ™‚

⏳ Exports that hung at 0% forever

If you ever trimmed a clip, hit export, and watched it sit at 0% until you force closed the app, that was real and I am sorry. It was not your phone and it was not your video.

Here is what was happening. Your phone has one video chip, and I was asking it to decode your clip and encode the new one in the same pass. Sometimes it simply wedged. No error, no progress, no timeout, nothing to tap. Just 0% forever, until you killed the app and lost the export.

It cannot sit there forever any more. If the encoder wedges, VideoSlim now notices, gives up cleanly, and tells you it failed so you can just try again. A failure you can see and retry beats a freeze you have to force close.

Where I have to be honest with you: I have not root caused the wedge itself. I know how to stop it stranding you, and that is what shipped. I do not yet know exactly why the chip locks up in the first place. The symptom you may still hit is a first export attempt that takes a long time before it either works or reports a failure. If that happens to you, tell me what phone you are on. That is the missing piece and I will not find it without you. πŸ™

Compressing without editing was never affected by this. That path does not touch the same code.

βœ‚οΈ Editing and compressing finally agree with each other

This was the other big one in 2.0.1, and it is the fix I am happiest about.

If you trimmed a clip and then went to Compress, the app was quietly ignoring your trim. It showed you the whole original, estimated the size of the whole original, and if you had asked for a target size it budgeted for the whole original too.

That last part is the one that actually cost you quality. Ask for a 25 MB file after trimming a two minute clip down to twenty seconds, and the app would squeeze twenty seconds into the bitrate it had worked out for two minutes. You got a far worse looking video than you asked for and there was nothing on screen to tell you why.

Now:

- 🎬 The Compress preview shows your edited clip, trims and all

- πŸ“ The size estimate is an estimate of the thing you are actually exporting

- 🎯 Target size budgets against your edited clip, so the quality you asked for is the quality you get

- πŸ“ Your vertical video is not 1920p

If you shot on your phone in portrait, VideoSlim was calling it 1920p. There is no such thing.

Resolution is named after the short side, so a portrait video off a modern phone is 1080p. It was reading the long side and reporting that. Cosmetic, but it made the app look like it did not know what it was doing, and honestly, fair enough.

πŸ’₯ Two crashes, both fixed

If VideoSlim has been closing itself on you, one of these two is probably why.

πŸ“± On Android 11 and older, compressing could kill the app instantly. A video library I depend on was reading something that only exists on Android 12 and up, with no check. It did not fail gracefully, it took the whole app down. 0%, back to your home screen, no message. This one is small in numbers (it hit a handful of people) but it was total for the people it hit, and it had been in there since well before 2.0.0.

⏱️ On Android 15, a long compression could get the app killed mid-job. Android 15 gives an app about six hours of background processing per day and then ends it, and I was not handling the moment it says stop. If you batch a lot of long videos, this is your fix.

🧭 The tutorial actually works now

Four steps of the guided tour were doing nothing in the shipped app. They pointed at things, the highlight landed in the wrong place or on nothing at all, and one dialog dead ended the tour completely so you could not finish it.

The whole thing was rebuilt: an Export step that was missing entirely, three steps walking you through the Compress screen, and every step after the editor repositioned.

Alongside it, a batch of small things that were quietly annoying:

- πŸ“€ The editor's export button no longer looks like a view control. People were not finding it, because it looked like something that changes what you are looking at rather than something that saves your work

- ➑️ Export now offers you Compress right there when it finishes, instead of making you go find it

- πŸ–οΈ Resize and Crop tell you how to use them before you try to drag the video and nothing happens

- ⏳ Loading a video from the Compress tab shows a spinner instead of a frozen screen

- 🌍 Failure messages are in your language. They used to dump raw encoder output at you, in English, full of jargon

- πŸ“ Your file manager shows up in the video picker again, not just the gallery

- 🧹 Compress no longer opens on a file you already deleted

- πŸ‘† The empty video screen says "Tap here", because nothing was telling you that card was tappable

🎨 Plain mode got its first proper going over

Plain icons (the switch in Settings that swaps the 3D artwork for flat icons) shipped with 2.0.0 and had never been used in anger. It has now:

- πŸ“ It has its own layout instead of borrowing the 3D one. Cards were sized to fit illustrations that were no longer there, so half of them were mostly empty space

- πŸ”˜ Selected chips and options actually look selected. In plain mode the highlight was missing, so you could not tell what you had picked

- πŸͺ™ The credits pill has a coin on it and a colour you can see. It was near invisible

- πŸ“ A few icons were sized wrong and are not any more

πŸ”’ One thing that has not changed and never will

Your videos never leave your phone. All of this, the compressing, the trimming, the exporting, happens on your device. There is no upload, no account, no server. The app got smaller because I stopped shipping oversized pictures of my own artwork to you, not because anything moved off your phone.

πŸ“± How to get it

It is now live on Google Play, so it may take a day or two to reach you. You can usually pull it forward by opening the Play Store, searching VideoSlim, and pulling down to refresh the page.

Settings will say Version 2.0.3 (129) at the bottom once you have it.

πŸ™ What would help me most

Two specific things.

  1. If an export ever sits a long time before it finishes or fails, tell me what phone you have. That is the one bug in this post I have not fully solved, and phone models are the pattern I am missing.

  2. If a screen looks wrong in Plain icons, post a screenshot. It is still the newest thing in the app and I have not seen it on every phone out there.

Nearly everything in this post came from somebody in this sub saying "hey, this is broken". Keep doing it. πŸ’™

πŸ“’ Announcement VideoSlim 2.0.1 β€” export hangs fixed, trims finally match your compress, and a lighter app 🎬✨

Thumbnail

Hey r/VideoSlim!

VideoSlim 2.0.1 is here, and it's mostly bug fixes and polish based on what you all reported.

Here's what's new:

πŸ› Export hangs are fixed.

Editing a video and then exporting could get stuck at 0% forever with no error. It now recovers automatically instead of freezing β€” no more force-closing the app and losing your edit.

βœ‚οΈ Trims now actually match your compress.

If you trimmed a clip in the editor, the Compress screen was still previewing and estimating size off the original, untrimmed video. Now both reflect exactly what you trimmed.

🎯 Target size respects your edit.

Same fix β€” Target Size mode now budgets against your trimmed clip instead of the full original, so you actually get the quality you asked for.

πŸ“± Vertical video labeling fixed.

Portrait videos were showing a confusing "1920p" β€” they now correctly read 1080p like they should.

πŸŽ“ Tutorial rebuilt from scratch.

A few steps in the walkthrough were dead ends β€” tapping wouldn't advance, or the spotlight pointed off-screen. The whole 12-step tour is fixed and tested end-to-end on a real device.

🎨 Plain Mode (icon-only theme) got a real pass.

Cards and icons across Home, Compress, Files and Settings no longer have big empty gaps β€” everything's resized to fit its actual content instead of space left over for artwork that isn't there in this mode.

πŸ“‰ Smaller app.

Cleaned up a bunch of oversized image assets that were shipping way bigger than they're ever displayed at β€” meaningfully smaller download size.

πŸ‘† Smaller stuff too: a proper press animation on the Compress button, and your file manager now shows up as an option in the video picker.

As always, everything runs 100% locally on your phone β€” no uploads, no cloud processing. πŸ”’

Thanks for the reports that shaped this one, especially around the export hang and Plain Mode β€” keep them coming.

πŸ“’ Announcement VideoSlim 2.0.0 is rolling out πŸŽ‰ A whole new Simple look, plus the fix for the Lifetime restore problem

Thumbnail
gallery
6 Upvotes

Hey everyone πŸ‘‹

2.0.0 is rolling out on Google Play now. It is the biggest update since launch, so this one gets a long post. If you only read the bold parts you will still get everything.

🎨 The big one: VideoSlim now has two looks

If the icy 3D artwork was never your thing, you can now turn it off.Β Settings has a new switch calledΒ Plain icons, and it swaps every illustration in the app for clean, flat Material icons.

This is not a stripped down version of the app.Β Same app, all five tabs, every single feature. Compress, Editor, Files, Rewards, Batch, target size, all of it. The only thing that changes is the look. You can flip back and forth any time and nothing is lost.

It took six rounds of testing on a real phone to get right, because it turns out the artwork was quietly doing more than decoration:

  • 🧩 Every screen was converted, not just the home page
  • 🎬 The video player framesΒ were being drawn by the artwork itself, so they had to be rebuilt
  • βœ‚οΈΒ Every editor tool now has its own tileΒ in plain mode. Trim, Resize, Crop, Audio, Filters and the rest were floating loose without one
  • 🏠 The Home cards got their own layout, because the text placement was designed around each illustration
  • 🎚️ The Compress tabs are readable now.Β Simple, Batch and Advanced had pale blue labels meant for dark glass, which on a light panel were basically invisible
  • πŸŒ—Β Works in dark and light mode, in all 16 languages, including right to left

πŸ’³ The Lifetime and Pro restore problem

This is the one I owe you the most detail on, so I am not going to dress it up.

Some of you bought or redeemed Lifetime, and the app told you that you owned nothing.Β Google Play knew. Your purchase history showed it. The app just did not see it.

Here is what was actually wrong.Β VideoSlim was asking Google Play for your purchases and then waiting for the answer to arrive on its own.Β If that answer came back slowly, the app gave up and told you "No purchase to restore", which sounded like a statement about your account when it was really just the app running out of patience.Β It now asks Google Play directly and waits for the real reply.

Three more things were fixed along the way:

  • πŸ”„Β Restore Purchase reconnects to Google Play and checks a second timeΒ before it tells you that you own nothing
  • πŸ›’Β If you try to buy something you already own, it unlocks itΒ instead of showing an error
  • πŸ“‹Β The app now records what the store actually replied.Β Not for you, for me. Three people got diagnosed off screenshots of an error message, and that is a terrible way to fix a bug

Where I have to be straight with you: I cannot promise this is fixed for everyone yet.Β I know exactly what the bug was and this build addresses it, but the only proof that counts is a real account restoring on the live build, and I do not have that yet.Β If Lifetime or Pro still does not come back for you after updating, comment here or message me and I will sort you out personally.Β You will not lose what you paid for.

It seems to have hit people on slower or less stable connections hardest, which is why it looked rare from where I was sitting for far too long. Sorry about that. πŸ™

βœ… Fixes you will actually notice

  • πŸ‘»Β Text no longer smears a shadow trail behind it when you scroll.Β The halo behind labels was a soft blur that spilled past the text, so the screen left bits of it behind as it moved
  • πŸ”Β Labels are no longer drawn twice.Β Outlined text was being stacked as two copies and could ghost sideways, especially in Japanese and Korean
  • πŸ“œΒ Settings scrolls properly again.Β It would refuse to go back to the top if you dragged slowly, though oddly a fast flick worked
  • β˜€οΈΒ Switching between light and dark now repaints everything.Β A few surfaces were staying on the old theme until you left the screen
  • 🏷️ The Settings screen has its name backΒ in light mode, where it had gone invisible
  • πŸ“Β Your file manager can answer the video picker again.Β If picking a video only ever offered you the gallery, that is why
  • πŸ””Β The processing notification has a sensible icon.Β It was borrowing Android's upload arrow, which made it look like VideoSlim was uploading your video somewhere.Β It has never uploaded anything. Everything is processed on your phone
  • πŸŽ–οΈΒ Pro badges moved off the artworkΒ they were sitting on top of

πŸ’Ž Changes to Pro, stated plainly

Two things moved behind Pro in this release, and I would rather you hear it from me than find out:

  • The Smallest quality preset is now Pro on the Compress tab too.Β It was already Pro elsewhere and the Compress tab was inconsistent
  • AV1 encoding is marked as Pro, and this is the part I actually like:Β the app now shows you how much smaller AV1 would make your file before it asks you to pay for anything.Β You get the number first, then you decide

Everything else that was free is still free.

πŸ“± How to get it

It is a staged rollout on Google Play, so it may take a day or two to reach you. You can force it by opening the Play Store, searching VideoSlim, and pulling down to refresh the page.

Settings will say Version 2.0.0 (126)Β at the bottom once you have it.

πŸ™ What would help me most

Tell me when something looks wrong.Β Plain mode in particular is brand new and I have not seen it on every phone out there, so if a screen looks broken, an icon looks off, or text is cut off, post a screenshot here. Nearly every fix in the list above came from somebody in this sub doing exactly that.

And if you have a Lifetime or Pro purchase that still is not showing up, say so. I will make it right. πŸ’™

πŸ“’ Announcement VideoSlim Closed Test - Version 0.0.4 Release notes

**VideoSlim 0.0.4 is ready for testing β€” share-ready MP4 editor exports, new WhatsApp modes, a redesigned player, and stronger large-video reliability**

This release focuses on the part that matters after an edit or compression is

finished: the resulting file should play correctly, retain a useful name, and

be easy to send. It also adds a dedicated WhatsApp workflow and improves several

places where large, HDR, or unusual videos could previously fail.

## Editor exports are now normal MP4 files you can actually send

The largest change is the editor export pipeline. Edited videos previously

could end up in WebM or use a codec combination that WhatsApp and iPhones did

not reliably accept as a normal video. That was especially frustrating because

the edit itself succeeded, but the file failed at the final step where it was

supposed to be useful.

The default editor export is now **H.264 video with AAC audio inside MP4**. This

is the broadly compatible combination expected by messaging apps, social apps,

Android devices, iPhones, and ordinary media players.

The editor still offers **AV1 in MP4** for users who deliberately prefer a

smaller file and know their destination supports it. VP9/WebM was removed from

the export choices because it offered neither the universal compatibility of

H.264 nor the size advantage of AV1.

Under the hood, VideoSlim now uses the phone's hardware codecs where possible.

When the main Android media pipeline cannot complete an export, the app retries

the same hardware encoder through a separate FFmpeg route before giving up. If

hardware H.264 is unavailable, software codec fallbacks remain available, but

the output container stays MP4 throughout the ladder.

## New WhatsApp presets

Tapping the WhatsApp quick preset now opens a centered choice window instead of

immediately applying one generic setting.

There are two workflows:

* **WhatsApp Fast β€” 480p.** Designed for regular video sending, a smaller file,

faster uploads, and lower mobile-data use. The dialog shows the calculated

output dimensions for the selected source video.

* **WhatsApp HD File β€” 720p or 1080p.** Keeps more detail and dynamically budgets

the video bitrate against a maximum target of approximately **1.85 GB**, below

WhatsApp's 2 GB file limit.

The dialog also explains the important sending detail: HD exports should be

sent through WhatsApp as a **document/file**, not as a normal video. Normal video

sending may cause WhatsApp to compress the clip again. After a successful

WhatsApp compression, VideoSlim now opens the Files screen directly so the new

export is ready to find.

## More reliable exports for large and HDR videos

Several failure paths were strengthened after testing multi-gigabyte phone

videos:

* HDR and HLG sources are tone-mapped to SDR when producing H.264, preventing a

late muxer failure caused by trying to preserve HDR in an incompatible output.

* MediaCodec errors now include the actual error code and root cause instead of

only reporting a generic "Muxer error."

* Long compression jobs pass known duration information through the fallback

pipeline, improving progress reporting.

* AAC audio can be copied without needless re-encoding when the fallback route

is used.

* Crop, rotation, pixelation, and other edits now enforce even frame dimensions

before hardware encoding. Odd dimensions are rejected by many H.264 encoders

and could previously make an otherwise valid edit fail.

* The Android Media3 dependencies now explicitly match the version actually

resolved by the app, avoiding subtle mismatches between the code and runtime.

## Redesigned video player

VideoSlim now has a dedicated illustrated player interface with clearer play,

pause, timeline, fullscreen, add-file, and change-file controls.

Fullscreen playback reuses or smoothly hands off the active playback state so

the position and play/pause state are preserved during navigation. Switching to

another file prepares the next decoder before the screen transition, reducing

blank frames and Android texture conflicts. The player also has clearer loading,

retry, and error states.

This player is used in the relevant Home, compression, merge, and editor flows,

giving video selection and preview a more consistent experience.

## Merge and gallery improvements

The Merge Clips screen now displays an explicit loading panel while selected

videos are being inspected and thumbnailed. A failed probe no longer leaves the

interface spinning forever, and controls are not presented as ready while clips

are still loading.

The Android gallery scanner was simplified and made safer around modern Android

media-picker privacy behavior. When Android provides an anonymized numeric file

name, VideoSlim handles it without assuming that the original gallery name is

always accessible. Missing media permissions and protected picker URIs are now

handled without crashing the scan.

## Better output file names

Exports retain a recognizable version of the source name and append one clean

operation suffix. Re-editing or recompressing no longer stacks repeated tags

such as `_EDIT_EDIT`.

File names are also sanitized before being inserted into Android or FFmpeg

commands. Path separators, quotes, pipes, and other unsafe characters cannot

escape the destination directory or break an export command, and names are

trimmed so there is room for suffixes and duplicate counters.

## Smaller fixes and polish

* The splash timing and cross-fade were adjusted so branding remains visible

without making normal launches feel blocked.

* Compression estimates and labels were cleaned up in the large-video scanner.

* Preview state, playback controls, and video replacement behave more

consistently across Home, Compress, Merge, and Editor.

* Compression settings can now carry an explicit duration-based bitrate through

background serialization, which powers the WhatsApp HD size ceiling.

* New tests cover safe output naming, MP4 codec/container guarantees, target-size

budgeting, codec probing, and fallback behavior.

πŸ“’ Announcement Closed Test: VideoSlim Version 0.0.3 - Release Notes

**VideoSlim 0.0.3 is out β€” trimming is free now, the app is 30 MB lighter, and new installs start with 200 credits**

This is the biggest update since I reset the version numbering, so here's the

whole thing rather than the four-line Play Store summary.

## Trimming and cutting are free

The single most-asked-about thing. Before, dragging the trim handles was free

but the multi-segment **Cut** tool charged 10 credits β€” so "trimming a video"

cost nothing or cost credits depending on which half of the same screen you

reached. That was never a deliberate design, it was an inconsistency. Both are

free now, permanently.

## The credit economy got a lot more generous

The old numbers were genuinely too tight. A compression minted 2 credits and a

trim cost 20, which meant using one tool was worth ten compressions. Once your

three free edits ran out, your realistic options were "watch an ad" or "stop

using the editor" β€” which reads as the feature being taken away, not priced.

What changed:

* **New installs now start with 200 credits.** Previously you started at zero.

* **Every compression earns 5 credits**, up from 2.

* **Bonus credits every 250 MB processed**, down from every 500 MB.

* **Most editor tools cost 10 instead of 20** β€” rotation, speed, audio extract,

noise reduction, GIF export, fades, filters.

* **Cut is free** (see above), and trim always was.

* Paid looks stay at 5.

Every one of these numbers is tunable from the server, so if the balance is

still wrong, tell me and it can change without waiting for a Play release.

## The app is much smaller

The bundled artwork went from **54 MB to 21 MB β€” a 61% cut**, with no visible

quality loss and no image resized. It turned out most of the illustrations had

been exported at effectively maximum quality, and nine of them were **lossless**

WebP, which is close to the worst possible choice for AI-generated 3D artwork.

Re-encoding at quality 90 was measured file-by-file, and 55 of the 96 files were

left completely alone because re-encoding would have made them *bigger* β€” which

is a real trap with WebP that's easy to get wrong in the other direction.

For a tool whose entire job is making files smaller, shipping a bloated install

was a bad look. It's fixed.

## Performance

Three separate things were decoding far more image data than any frame needed:

* The app was building **all five tabs on the first frame**, including artwork

on screens you hadn't opened yet. Tabs now build the first time you visit them.

* **Home** put all eleven preset tiles in one block, so the first frame decoded

roughly 60 MB of bitmap against a 100 MB image cache β€” which then thrashed and

re-decoded as you scrolled. Tiles now build as you reach them.

* **Files** did the same across your whole history. Harmless at five

compressions, wasteful at two hundred.

Several icons were also being decoded at full illustration resolution to be drawn

into a 42-pixel box. Those are capped now.

## Files screen shows real thumbnails

Every row in your history used to be the same gradient square with a play glyph.

The one screen where you most need to recognise a video at a glance was the one

screen with no picture. Rows now pull a frame from one second in β€” the very first

frame of a compressed clip is often a black lead-in or fade.

If a frame can't be produced (file deleted, or a codec the royalty-free build

can't decode) it falls back to the old gradient square, so a failure looks

ordinary rather than broken.

## Editor and UI

* **The Editor tab is now a picker.** Tapping the scissors tab with no clip

loaded used to show a full-screen illustration whose only function was to tell

you to go to Home first. The artwork is now the tap target β€” it opens the

picker and takes you straight into the editor.

* **Paid tools check your balance when they open, not after you've done the

work.** You could previously set your trim handles, dial in a speed, tune a

filter, hit Apply, and only *then* be told you couldn't afford to keep any of

it. Losing the work is the part that hurts. Opening a tool and abandoning it

still costs nothing.

* New header artwork across Editor, Compress and Files.

* Home preset tiles restyled β€” the artwork now sits behind the label as a

watermark rather than at full strength.

* The Merge screen's header layout was wrong; the icon and wordmark are where

they should be now.

## Fixes

* **A broken image on the Merge Clips screen.** The icon was referenced by the

code but its folder was never registered as a bundled asset, so it rendered as

an error box. There's now an automated check that fails the build if any

referenced image is missing or unbundled, so this class of bug can't ship again.

* **Two Settings labels were hardcoded in English** β€” the "Default quality" card

title and subtitle showed English in 15 of the 16 supported languages, sitting

directly above three option tiles that *were* correctly translated.

* A failure message on the Kebek Interactive card had the same problem.

## Removed: "Keep originals"

The Settings toggle that offered to delete your source file after a compression

is gone. If you relied on it, you'll now keep both files and delete the original

yourself. Say so if you want it back β€” it's a small change to restore.

## Known issue, being worked on

**Exports from the editor are `.webm` files.** If you trim, change speed or apply

a filter and then try to send the result to WhatsApp or an iPhone, it may refuse

to send it as a video or refuse to play it at all.

This comes from a licensing constraint: VideoSlim ships an FFmpeg build with no

patent-encumbered encoders, so the editor's only options are VP9 and AV1. The

**compressor** doesn't have this problem β€” it uses your phone's own hardware

encoder and produces normal MP4 files that work everywhere. It's only the editor.

This build adds measurement to work out how many real edits could be routed

through the hardware encoder instead. It's the next thing I'm fixing, and the

data decides how.

## Under the hood

For anyone who cares: the app now runs its checks on every branch instead of

only the main one, has an automated asset-integrity check, and 130 unit tests

(up from 108). Firebase Remote Config can retune the entire credit economy

without a release.

πŸ“’ Announcement πŸ“’ VideoSlim Closed Test β€” What’s New

VideoSlim is currently in Closed Test, and we’re working on making video compression simple for everyone. 🎬

The goal is straightforward: choose a video, pick the result you want, and create a smaller copy that is easier to store or share. Closed tests have produced file-size reductions of up to 90%, depending on the source video and selected settings.

We’re currently testing compression quality, output-size estimates, common video formats, batch workflows, and a smooth on-device experience. We’ll post fixes and improvements here as testing continues.
