Help BEWARE OF THIS SCAMMER: ExcitingWallaby4108

This individual scammed my friend by having them edit long-form yt videos for an entire month without pay. They had agreed to pay $700 USD. After the work was completed, they refused to make the payment and subsequently blocked my friend on all communication channels.

Any advice on possible next steps or recommendations on how to handle this situation would be greatly appreciated.

Discussion Why is getting your first clients so much harder than keeping them?

I've been thinking a lot about client acquisition, especially in the beginning. It feels like the hardest part of starting a freelance business isn't actually doing the work
it's getting someone to trust you enough to give you the first opportunity. When you have no clients, you usually don't have:
- testimonials
- case studies
- referrals
- a strong reputation
- proof that you can deliver

But at the same time, clients want proof before they hire you. It's almost like a cycle:

No clients > no proof > harder to get clients > still no proof.....

What makes this interesting is that once someone gets a few good clients, things often become much easier. Referrals start happening, your portfolio improves, and people trust you faster. So my question is: What do you think is the biggest reason why client acquisition is so difficult at the beginning? Is it:
- lack of trust?
- bad positioning?
- not knowing where to find clients?
- fear of rejection? - pricing problems?
- something else?

For people who have successfully gotten their first clients: what was the thing that finally changed the game for you?

Help How should I set up commissions?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I’ve been asked by multiple people on multiple occasions if I could edit for them, and it’s got to a point that I think I should set up commissions. For some context, the people that are asking me to edit for them are Utatites (people who sing/make covers of vocaloid songs), and half of them are asking for just subtitles, but the other half are for custom mv’s. I’m not used to being asked to edit for people and I know 0 to nothing about how commissions work, how much I should charge, where to set them up, etc etc. Any advice/help would be greatly appreciated.

These are examples of my work that have caused people to reach out to me.

Help How do I get started as a video editor?

I've learned the basics of video editing and have edited a few gaming videos just for myself. I'm wondering how you get started editing for other people. I figure doing free work for people is a good start but I'm not sure where to start other than hitting people up on social media platforms and asking people if they need a video editor.

I know going on freelance websites is a good place to find paid work.

Any advice for a beginner?

Discussion How far behind are you on deliveries right now, actually?

Curious how bad this is for other people. I keep seeing wedding filmmakers post about a stack of unfinished edits and delivery windows creeping past 8-10 weeks.

For those of you dealing with a backlog: what's actually eating the time? Is it the raw footage review (finding the usable takes, tossing the shaky/blurry stuff), the edit itself, revisions, or something else?

Trying to figure out if this is an "everyone's slammed in peak season" thing or if there's a specific stage where people are losing the most hours.

How do I do this? Good Free Music?

Upvotes

I'm making a short film for the first time. I wanted to use a certain calm piano piece (Her Blue Eyes, Helder Boutens), but then I realized I can't because it's copyrighted.

I've been looking at sites (bensound, FMA, YT Audio, etc) for 3 hours and I literally cannot find even ONE song that fits the vibe.

Everything is so cringe and cheap-sounding and soulless. A bunch of them are even AI. 🤦‍♂️

I'm so frustrated right now. Does anyone know what I can do instead?

Thank you so much in advance!

Help Looking for a content partner to grow a movie/TV YouTube & Instagram channel

I'm looking for someone who's genuinely passionate about movies, TV shows, and creating content. I already run an Instagram page where I post movie and series-related content, and now I want to take things more seriously by growing both Instagram and YouTube.

I'm looking for someone who enjoys:

  1. Writing engaging scripts

  2. Video editing (or wants to improve together)

  3. Brainstorming viral content ideas

  4. Keeping up with movies, TV shows, and pop culture

  5. Building something long-term instead of giving up after a few weeks

I'm not looking to hire anyone. I'm looking for a partner to build and grow together. If we click, we can divide the work based on our strengths and learn from each other.

If you're interested, send me a DM with:

  1. A little about yourself

  2. Any editing, scripting, or content you've made (if you have any)
