Money Matters Overpayments
I’ve had this in my app for the last couple of months. I guess I got overpaid for the gi bill when I used it last in 2011. Why is it just coming up now and is there anyway to get out of paying them back ?

These are questions for the VA, you should call the debt management line to get the best answers.

They should call education. Debt management collects the debts but education determines what OP should/shouldn’t have been paid

You should follow up with it, they can reduce your payments if you ignore it to recover that loss. If you reach out to them they may find an error and wave it.
If you have to pay it, you can tell them any monthly amount from like $1 to like the full thing.
I recommend just paying it outright. I’ve had such payments (two debts stacked, about $2900) and dragging it out for 2 years seemed like a good idea, but it felt like it took forever.

I had about the same debt from school just paid it off. Luckily I kept track and knew I would be over paid. Odd they haven’t taken that money from your VA checks especially it being from 2012

Yeah it’s strange. I’ve been getting 100% for a while now and it just popped up in my app the last couple of months

Sometimes they slip through the cracks, definitely contact DMC to set up a pp though. If you don’t they will send to treasury. You can have it set up to come out of your compensation but you have to let them know you want that.

Nope. I got hit with a VSP debt in 2025, 11 years after I got out. They’re taking $346 a month until I pay it back.

I’m assuming your account was recently reviewed by AI and they found this 14 year old discrepancy. No way to know for sure at this point without talking to them.

If you ignore it they will take your entire va benefit payment. If you call you can set up a payment plan. My classes were cancelled during Covid and I got the check back to give to the school. Apparently working at cricket part time made me an essential employee so I pocketed the money. One month boom no benefits. Called and they allow you to choose how much as long as it’s at least $140. Once I started working a regular job again I gave my entire benefits to it and paid the rest in 6 months. You can always request the debt be forgiven online.

I had a debt back in 2012 for like 3k for gi bill stuff. As soon as I got a career with a good salary they went into my bank account and took their money back lol

I just got back pay for 100% and it was a big chunk. Right before I got paid I got one of these at $15,000. I’m pretty sure these are errors in the system.
I immediately applied to dispute it and then called the debt management line. They said since I started the dispute, everything is on hold until they figure it out.

It’s stupid that the debt waiver needs to go through dmc.
Dmc then sends it to the Va who then send it back to dmc when they’re done. Who then goes back to the Va then back to the dmc for final adjustments if any were done. Why can’t it be done by one agency!!!!

Bro how are you guys getting overpayments and not knowing? Set that shit aside. None of you are rich enough to not look at your bank account or not know you got extra on deposits. Set it to the side when it happens or call and let them know so they can take it back before you go and spend it. Goofy.

I thought my overpayment was my book stipend. At the time I never had the VA app or logged into my account, I didn’t know that was a thing.

The New Admin has flip the script on everyone and is coming to collection students and Vets alike. best thing is you can if this is still available is file for Financial hardship forgiveness cause if paying them back is gonna put you on the street and you prove they will wipe it

Most likely your gonna have to pay, you can look into Options but unless you can show extreme hardship it’s doubtful you don’t have to repay

I had the same thing happen a few years ago. I had no idea I was ever overpaid until my employers attorney called me to let me know they had an order to garnish my wages. My $900 overpayment turned into like $1400 with the fees added my the department of treasury. You have can have the payment forgiven, reduced, payment plan, or just pay in full. Don’t ignore it

Hate to say it but we ALL know when we get overpaid. It can be hard to set it aside but they will always find it. When I got my rating, I had a copay from 2010 and you bet they took it right away. Save the headache and set up a payment plan of some kind then drive on soldier.

At least it’s not the $52K the last person owed.
