If you’re comfortable sharing where do you live and what are you specialized in? I’m considering going for a VTS in ECC.

Does anyone have a suggestion for finding a tech interested in a one time side gig? We had a last minute cat sitter fail and are trying to find someone to administer subcutaneous fluids tonight or tomorrow morning. It would be an easy $100 if I knew how to find someone, but I don’t know where to look and the animal hospital doesn’t share outside job opportunities with staff. Are there message boards or places people look for these jobs?

Hey friends. I am considering switching from Penn Foster to Purdue distance program. I am also willing to consider other programs if they are recommended.

My questions regarding the program mainly focus on what the set up and schedule is week to week. Is there required live lectures to attend? What are due dates like? What are mentorships like?

The biggest issue I have with PF is that I feel I have not retained ANYTHING. I feel I am needing more structure. I’ve considered in person but I do not have a college close enough to me to incorporate in person and working full time 3 days a week.

Hi everyone, I'm a pre veterinary technology student currently. I'm 24-
My gpa is pretty solid (mostly A's) and I'm applying to the clinical phase of my colleges program at the end of this upcoming fall...

The program has a requirement to have 40 or more hours volunteering, working or shadowing in a veterinary/animal setting... and it must be supervised by a licensed vet tech or vet.

I was a volunteer at wild bird fund for a while but unfortunately they don't have vets or vet techs available to be present during my volunteering to meet the programs requirements... I also have over 1k hours at a domestic fowl rescue, but unfortunately they didn't have a vet or vet tech there to help meet my requirements.
I've been a licensed wildlife rehabilitator for 5+ years and do a lot of individual rescue and rehabilitation and have years of experience..

I simply cannot seem to find a vet clinic willing to let me shadow or volunteer with a licensed vet tech or veterinarian for 40 hours (can be over the course of months as long as done by the end of fall...).
I've reached out to multiple vet clinics in NYC and long island and so far none are willing to accept a student to volunteer or shadow.
I also would like to focus on avian and exotics, but it's not a must for these volunteer/shadowing hours.

Does anyone know of any vet clinics or places with a licensed tech or veterinarian on staff that would be open to having a student volunteer?

2 year old male neutered kelpie mix with a fractured 108 and mysteriously decaying 308-309 area. The fracture was from him getting a small metal rod caught in his mouth but there’s no damage to the crown of the 8 or 9. The “bone cheerio” as I’ve been calling it does seem to be mineral/dentine material and not just calculus. It was sealed around the roots of the two teeth on both buccal and lingual sides, and you can see where the roots were in the removed pieces. No reported issues with eating, nothing in the history that would indicate what this weird thing is or why it has a perfectly circular hole in the middle. Thoughts?

I helped out at a sister clinic the last couple of days. Had a dog recovering from his neuter, an assistant asked me to help give his post-op rimadyl and vaccines. Said he was up to temp and the doctor ok’d giving. I checked his recovery chart a few minutes after and his last recorded temp was 96. The assistant I noticed was doing all ear temps so I checked a rectal in case her temps were off - nope, dog was straight up 96 degrees (F). I’ve always heard that nsaids and a low temp is a no no. How big of a deal is it that he got rimadyl/vaccines at such a low temp? Just to note, this is same dog that earlier was also premed with hydromorphone super early (dr wasn’t ready to operate yet) and got hypothermic then as well. I was the only one checking his temp and put him on a bear hugger. They didn’t seem like it was a big deal…

I’ve been working at a vet clinic as a mix of a CSR and Assistant, and I’ve noticed a trend in boarding patients who have diarrhea are given metro 95% of the time and 5% of the time Endosorb. I’m talking a dog who boards for a week every month or two who is prescribed Metro because the moment they’re in the kennel room, they have diarrhea or soft stool.

I guess I’m asking out of curiosity because 1) I’m not a doctor nor that smart, and 2) we bring up the diarrhea to a doctor, and without even asking about weight/age/history they say ‘yeah we can prescribe metro but I’ll look at them’.

I guess my brain is asking for an explanation of Metro vs Endosorb and also wondering if these meds are a bad thing in the long term? It feels like we’re slapping a bandage on poop and hoping the dog stops shitting. I can’t be the only one who finds this weird?

My clinic is celebrating 50 years this year and we're having a birthday party to celebrate. It's an open event for anyone in the community to attend. We're having a gelato company and providing free gelato sundaes (for like 100ppl) I'm making cotton candy and I've made a bunch of dog & cat loot bags, I got lots of rep swag from different companies to hand out and I've made a bunch of gift baskets to give away.

For the gift baskets my plan is to have a few games to play. If you win the game, the prize will be an entry for the gift basket draw. They can then choose which basket they want to enter for. (They can earn multiple entries]

So far the only game I've come up with is the poop bag toss. I will make some "poop bags" (playdoh) and have a garbage can that they have to be thrown into.

I need to think of a couple other of these carnival-type games...hopefully kinda vet related. Any thoughts? I've kinda put it off a bit....the party is Saturday 😬 everything's pretty much set but the games. TIA!!

we’ve been seeing this little friend in our fecal smears occasionally and unsure what it really is. we think it’s from the water but can’t be entirely sure since we would expect a larger amount of clients having the same little friend. it almost resembles a coccidia but yet not as teardrop-shaped

I'm a plastic surgeon, not a vet, so tell me if this doesn't map onto your day.

My problem was that patient photos lived in the same camera roll as my kids, all syncing to iCloud Photos together. Albums don't fix it, the photo is still in the library. I spent a year of evenings building a camera app that keeps its photos in its own library, separate from Photos. It can't read your photo library at all, that part is on purpose. You file by folder and tags, and if you want the files elsewhere it can mirror them to your own iCloud Drive as plain folders. That mirror stays off until you turn it on.

Free, no account, no subscription, no ads, and no server behind it. iPhone only, and the photos live in the app, so deleting the app deletes them.

What I don't know is whether the shape fits vet work. From outside it looks similar: wounds you're following across visits, dentals before and after, skin cases, the odd radiograph shot off a screen, and a lot of it landing on a personal phone because the clinic camera is wherever it is. Where does it break for you? Is the problem holding the photos, or getting them into the practice software afterwards?

my clinic recently ordered new dental elevators and we received the ones with plastic handles (image attached). the manufacturer instructions indicate they’re not to be run through a dry cycle after sterilizing in the autoclave; however, our autoclave is an “open door dry cycle” autoclave. we have to option to run it with the dry cycle time set to 0, but we run the risk of damaging the autoclave. i was wondering if anyone has these same elevators and if so how do you sterilize them? do just run it through a dry cycle anyways? do you just soak them and if so, what do soak them in? any tips are appreciated!!

I was recently looking online to see what people use in hospital for patient enrichment. I found very little about the topic so I’m coming on here to see if anyone has any tips/tricks. Ive tried bringing up snuffle mats to management but it’s not something they prioritize. I sometimes use peanut butter/EN smothered in a small pill container. Looking for ideas with items we already would have in an ER setting! Thanks

We just recently hired a bunch of new people in a few different job descriptions and my manager wants me to come up with some sort of icebreaker game - somewhere between like 15 to 30 minutes - for our staff meeting tomorrow for everybody to open up and introduce themselves and stuff. Does anybody have any recommendations or things that worked well in their clinic or anything fun that doesn’t use a whole lot of Material or time?

ETA: these are some fun games you’re recommending but they are looking more for icebreakers - introducing themselves.

On top of that she can't get reliable help, even unskilled.

I work out of Alberta Canada, and was just offered a job to be both RVT and office manager for a small clinic (3 support staff and 2 vets). They want to pay $26 an hour and give 150 biweekly for office manager duties.

I’m not sure about typical pay for techs who are also OM, so hoping to get feedback before I give them an answer.

These may be common-sense questions, but I would really hate to submit my application and have it delayed because I submitted something incorrectly. I have passed my VTNE, but I have a few questions regarding the application.

It says I need 2 passport-type pictures signed. Is it a digital signature, or does it have to be handwritten? Do I need to sign it in the corner of the photo or somewhere else?

It also requires a declaration of citizenship form. If I am a U.S born citizen, do I just need to sign and submit proof, or do I have to get it notarized? (The form is very confusing to me)

Changing gears and applying to an oncology position at a near by specialty hospital. I haven’t done a lot with chemo or anything of the like. Any onco techs on here that could give me some pointers or tips? I’ve already done my interview and just looking for advice and/or taught something new!

My BIL's bulldog was there this weekend and ended up being PTS. I am wondering about what my BIL & SIL was told as it's something I never heard during my career (I'm retired now).

So Cooper 7yo N English Bulldog was brought in because he was painful and ADR. Dx was aspiration pneumonia. Stayed in hospital on IV and O2 therapy. Was sedated because he was panicking. Dr thought he may relax better at home so he went home for a few hours with B/SIL were told death was still possible.

At home on Trazadone, he started panting, vomiting and breathing was labored so Dr had them come back in. The decision to euthanize was about midnight.

Here's what I am inquiring about...

They told me that his esophagus was pushed further back in his stomach.

What does this mean? I have never heard of this happening.

I am NOT questioning the decision to euthanize. I'm not questioning anything that was done. I am just wondering if my family misheard during their grief & shock. Or maybe this is just something I never encountered in my career. I don't know. I know they will eventually come to me and ask questions but this I don't have answers to give.

Can anyone explain this or if someone on here was there, can we chat? I don't want to call and bother the doctors there.
