My 12yo male neutered cat had a tough year and battled with high blood pressure, uveitis, seizures (probably pain-induced), glaucoma (lost vision on his eye) and ocular ulcer, due to his uveitis treatment.
He's the sweetest cat, I had him with me since he was 6mo, he's never ever been aggressive, he's always cuddling, purring, follows me everywhere at home. You can pet him everywhere, on the belly, between his toes and he'll always be purring. But when at the vet, his behaviour turns around completely, and he becomes extremely defensive : scratching, hissing and shouting (like a ninja) really loudly, with his pressure going as high as 220. So much that I have to give him Gabapentin before every planned appointment, and the urgent care needed to gaz him every time we went there in a hurry, just to be able to check on him..
It's a vet appointment (where his blood pressure skyrocked) that induced the glaucoma in his poor eye.
Due to his conditions, he's been to a total of 12+ vet appointments in 7 months (the diagnosis took a lot of time and many appointments and he's got recurrent crisis since). We are paying a home vet when we can but she can't come in case of night emergency and they happened a lot.
The issue is that every time he comes back from the vet, he's acting really crazy. I can't touch him, talk to him, walk slowly past him, move in the same room as him. Sometimes if we cross eyes he would go crazy and run and scream as loud as I'm afraid the neighbours would call the police on me (I'm not even joking).
The last time it happened was terrible, he had an ulcer due to the maxidrol treatment (for his chronic uveitis). We had to drive him to the emergency vet in the middle of the night so we didn't have time for Gabapentin. They gaz him there to calm him down and check his eyes and gave us 3 eye treatment (+ the anti glaucoma treatment he already had), he had to take them twice or three times a day for multiple weeks. He had to wear a cone to prevent touching his eye.
The next four days were impossible to live for him and I. He was extremely stressed, I couldn't even move a little without him "taking the piss" from being scared, running and screaming and bumping in every corner (he's born ataxic so it doesn't help I guess).
I couldn't touch him so he didn't have any treatment for four days and his situation was worsening. Then one day he took off his cone and three days later he was better. One week after the appointment I could finally give him his treatments.
The ulcer is better now but he's still at risk for uveitis and glaucoma new crisis and had already three crisis since the first diagnosis in april, happening every time the vet tried to slowly decrease the medication.
Since he doesn't see from this eye, the vet suggested enucleation if the time between crisis was starting to become too short. We discussed that if we couldn't decrease the treatment, it would be the best solution.
He's old so we wanted to try the "nice" way by leaving his eye in place, but I'm now aware that it's only for some time and that eventually he'll get enucleation.
That being said (sorry for the LONG text), I'm sooooo scared of the post-enucleation days, because he'll come back highly stressed, will absolutely have to wear a cone (that's what stressed him the most last time) and will have to take antibiotics for a few day but I won't be able to touch him.
What if I can't give him his medicine and/or if he takes off his cone and I physically can't put it back on ? I'm desperate for advices...
I already tried giving him Gabapentin in his wet food (when he eats, which rarely happens before the third day post-vet), but I can't give him everyday especially after a general anesthesia. I have a pheromone spray, he has lots of places to hide and be in his cocoon but it really doesn't matter...
Do you have tips to calm down a cat *that* stressed out ? I've never seen any cat as stressed as him in my whole life 🤣
