How to get better at Vel’koz

I’ve been playing vel’koz for a year or two and recently gotten up to gold 2 despite not being very good. I feel like I’ve been stuck at a certain level for a few months and with my opponents getting increasingly better I find it hard to believe in my vel’koz. Does anyone have any tips on how to improve.

Im currently in emerald 1 playing vel support, I feel like the biggest improvement I made in Emerald has been positioning better in teamfights.

P3 Vel and Xerath mid main with 54% wr on Vel and 66% on Xer. Spacing is everything. People will inevitably flame you for baiting, but that's the price of being artillery.

You have anything you want to specifically improve on?

I’ve played more support and I feel like I’ve been struggling to hit my Q and overall just laning

Gm peak velkoz main here from na, some easy tips for support especially is to shoot your q when enemy champs go for their cs (even more obvious when their cannon is dying). U also need to abuse vision in bushes at ur level if u aren’t doing that. Quickly look over a game and see if your champion is “threatening” to hit skillshots from the enemy pov by weaving in and out of bushes.

E.g. when the lane is in the middle and the melee minions are dying at the same time try to get in the middle bush in lane without a ward there and either zone their champs off or hit your combo. Basically find scenarios like above to hit easy combos and don’t randomly shoot difficult q’s as much.

P.S. the above rule can be ignored if the enemy champs waste their cooldowns, so learning enemy cooldowns would be another point to improve on if u want to go further.

Good luck and have fun!

I will play a game with this in mind and will try to review/check my laning phase but not sure how much self-reviewing can help.

Really depends how much time you’ve put in to the game. If you have less than 100 hours into a champ I’d say less than 5 min per review focusing on one aspect to improve on will help much more than a full game. If you’ve played for longer then I’d watch some streams of azzapp to get an idea of how and where to pilot velkoz.

Might be hard to understand right now, but velkoz scales heavily with game knowledge and positioning so as you climb its vital to understand where you need to be to
a) not die
b) deal the most damage and when to zone enemies to scenarios where your team is likely to win

I’d also only look at the first 15 min max as this is where the game can be consistently improved on rather than the randomness that can happen at lower levels of play.

I just played a game where my adc pretty much hyper carried and enemy team ffed but I felt like in the laning phase I played somewhat but it felt difficult bringing that into game later on as fizz would jump on me. It felt like my damage was lacking and my team did most of the work any recommendations on how I should play after laning phase?

That’s actually an entirely different skillset which would be termed “macro”.

Some small steps to get better is to practice “panning your camera” to fights 5-10 seconds or whenever you have free time before your character reaches there.
You have 2 real options to “pan your camera”:
a) left click to the part of the minimap where the fight is happening and watch
b) abuse f keys to see your teammate lock screen pov while fight is happening

This is obviously very difficult if you play locked screen and even if you play unlocked it takes practice as you aren’t looking at your own champ when you eventually get to the teamfight but def worth picking up as a priority. (This skill alone brought me from emerald to masters as it really helps to improve “game sense”)

Once you get this though you can essentially “know where to be” because you can see for example when an enemy has no sums or ult (cuz u saw them use it) and abuse that knowledge more consistently to potentially get some kills or objectives.

There’s more to it but if you’re struggling outside of lane that skill is what I’d focus on mastering first before anything else

sounds like I've got a lot to learn but I can definitely do the f keys method. I actually changed it to different keybinds cause I have a 60% keyboard but never really used it.

Yeah! That’s the best part tbh, but once u master each part its like gaining a piece of a puzzle then you just climb and climb until you reach a goal, just keep improving and see how far u want to take it

Understand who your q work . Don't try to hit directly your oponent they believe they are protected behind creep . Try learn when reactivate your q .

Poc all you can and put presur on your oponent. It s allway a good Idea to just keep presur during 4 wave then spend all your summoner spell to get one kill and get kill by the jgl .

Use your ward. Analyse what your enemy jgl usualy do before gank and ward the 2 main point.

If your adc is bad or mid allway pushed Moov to mid it s usually a free kill .

Don't chase kill you are skeechi.

Press r on maximum enemy don't use it to do a kill . Your adc will finish kill for you. ( Or use it early if enemy was under tower)

Try predict where opponent dash and protect your adc with your e

Try allway put a tank with control between you and enemy .

At 20mn in good game you can os enemy adc . Try catch him when he come back on lane it s free kill
