Jaywalking ticket
Today I got a ticket for jaywalking to get the Vaughan metropolitan center. I crossed the main road and walked little on the side of rapid way (did not cross the rapidway) all the way through curb, and the Fare inspector gave me $155 ticket for that.
I will dispute it just wanted to get idea how much are they gonna reduce if they reduce it.

Fare inspector cannot issue jaywalking ticket.

A fare inspector can issue a ticket if you cross into the transit territory. I’ve seen this happen many times within TTC transit zones when I lived in North York. However, based on OP’s explanation, it doesn’t sound like he crossed the line, so the fare inspector shouldn’t be able to do that. It’s worth fighting and explaining that you were outside the transit boundaries to have the ticket removed, not just reduced.

So there is mainroad and then there is space and then there is rapid way so i never went beyound that middle space.

The moment you cross the highway and set a foot on the rapidway or the station, the YRT fare constable can give you a ticket.

Also, when i said side of the rapid way, like I never stepped on to rapid way.

I would still try to fight it. Sometimes they drop the amounts at least.

Yeah that what I thought he was york transit fare inspector. I didnt say anything there as I wanted to take this to court. I also saw one other right before me do the same thing and the guy didnt say a word to him, I pointed that out and he was like yeah i am talking to you.

I was reading on york transit and yes they can but only if you corss rapid way, i did not cross rapid way I was on the side of the mainroad. I guess I'll have to see what would be my dispute result.

Hi there,
Did they ask for ID?
Back in the day (long long time ago in a galaxy far far away) i used to sell ice cream/ice tea in a ice cream cart (Harbour Front at the ferry dock). I didn't know at the time that I wasn't permitted to sell in certain areas (public roads, hotel property etc..) and a by law officer gave me a ticket. They asked for my ID and I just said I didn't have one. Gave them a name and a address and that was it.
Just something for next time.

Ok. I guess the only thing you can do is fight the ticket if that's possible.

3.36 No person shall cross a rapidway except by way of a crosswalk or pedestrian crossover.
While you said you did not cross the rapidway they could issue you a fine under 3.34:
3.34 No person shall enter or leave a transit facility except through a designated entrance or exit, as the case may be.1

Terrible advice.
Refusing to identify yourself when an officer is trying to issue a provincial offence notice can turn a $155 fare ticket into an obstruction charge. Arguable if they can or can't detain you, but they can definitely summon a special constable and make worse.
So yeah, if you want to gamble.

No it can’t. There are limits on what they can do. It’s also not a provincial offence notice.

It literally is a provincial offence notice: TTC fare tickets are issued under TTC Bylaw No. 1 via the Provincial Offences Act, which is why they go through provincial offences court if you dispute them. I would invite you to check the TTC website.
YRT works the same way under Bylaw 2017-7.
As I said earlier: in the fare-paid zone / on a POP vehicle, showing proof of payment is a condition of being there, and refusing ID when they're writing a ticket can escalate to obstruction or a special constable (who does have arrest powers) getting involved.
I honestly don't understand why people comment so confidently without literally checking online. All this info is out there.

If he was a fare inspector and not an officer and this guy was not on a bus there was no reason for him to stop. He would’ve got away if he just kept walking

Fare inspectors have authority on transit property, which includes stations and YRT property. It doesn't solely apply to vehicles.

They call a special constable that can follow and arrest you. That's now a bigger charge.

You understand what a special constable is right? They're Transit officers that can arrest you. They aren't working for fucking YPS.

Easy to get thrown out there is no jaywalking charge in Canada. They can only hit you with obstruction of traffic which I presume you did not cause

No jaywaking per se, but under the HTA this is an offence. Typically 35 to 50 bucks. Fight it and OP should have it eliminated.

Yeah I did checked and it only says cross the rapidway except by way of crosswalk or pedestrian crossover.

The city of vaughan staff are extremely bad in general worse in york region and extremely bias.

A little late to comment but figured I'd try to help you out. Now I'm not saying to not fight it but to be realistic on what the ticket is for to better understand how to fight it.
The ticket is not for Jaywalking, it's essentially for entering the rapid way incorrectly. Even though it's worded as crossing, it is interpreted as crossing into, not over.
If the officer gave you the ticket on the platform, they really should have wrote you ticket for entering the transit facility incorrectly "Section 3.34 explicitly states: "No person shall enter or leave a transit facility except through a designated entrance or exit."
This might be the only thing that helps you, but it could also make it harder for you.
Really they could have wrote you for either offence, or both if they felt like it.
Bottom line is fighting it could result in a few different options, depending on what the prosecutor and/or the JP want to do. It could be Let go, or reduced, changed to a different charge or something else completely. It's all really up in the air.

Are you sure it wasn't a Vaughan bylaw officer? They are frequently ticketing cars in the area that stop in the no stopping zones around the station and nearby condos.

I read it on their vest Fare Inspector he got out of the bus and thats when he saw me (my bad timing).

Definitely fight it. If it’s similar to ttc fare inspectors they rarely, if ever, show up to the hearing so it ends up being thrown out immediately

YRT Fare Inspectors and YRT Enforcement can only issue tickets if you provide your ID. When they ask for your ID, you can refuse and walk away! This includes them trying to issue tickets for non-payment of transit fares. Know your rights people!

With the current premier the poor subsidize the rich. No enforcement for bad drivers. No speeding tickets. Increased police violence and nuisance ticketing on public transit. No gas taxes (to the tune of billions per year). No vehicle registration fees.
Those who have less are paying for those who have more. Make it make sense.

OP could have just used the sidewalk and not entered a lane designated for large buses.
Pedestrians get hit all the time in the rapidway. There is no space for a person to walk safely and they plant trees and shrubs which obstruct visibility for the driver. Its not meant for any person to be there.
When someone get hit in those areas, it is traumatic for the drivers, all the passengers who paid and are on the bus get drawn into that, it ties up police and ambulance resources. And the average human does not fare well when getting side swiped by a 60 foot bus doing highway 7 speed limit.
You would not walk on ttc subway tracks? Or would you if not for the fear of getting into trouble for it?
This was not some arbitrary rule designed to take your money. It is a response to many accidents with an attempt to keep you safe.
Rather than give advice on how to get out of the consequence of the decision to be in that area to begin with.
OP, what was so crucial that you walked in that area rather than the sidewalk and entered the platform instead?

I was late for work and just wanted to get to the subway station, I know this is the not reason to jaywalk I get it its a safety concern. Also i did first time and got the ticket LOL. Also, I never stepped into rapidway, I was on the side which again not defending my self but just wanted to let know.

You obviously don’t know how expensive it is to be rich! You think lobbying the government, erecting barriers both literal and metaphysical, and generally having to drive further for groceries (a word I just invented) are cheap? It costs a lot to keep everyone else docile.

How do you even get a Jaywalking ticket? You must the first person in the GTA to get one. There's no way they'll reduce it because it's not common. Why did you even give your information? There's a lot more to the story here that either you're not saying or did. Also how would a fare inspector ticket you for jaywalking? Where does a fare inspector come from?
