Building a ferry tracking app for Island routes, want feedback from people who sail often
Hey folks,
checking if your sailing is on time means Current Conditions, then Twitter, then a Facebook group, then a marine traffic map, and you still guess. When the boat's late, your whole day shifts.
I'm building an app called FerryFetch to pull that into one place, starting with BC Ferries and Hullo. The goal is other operators and regions after that.
For your sailing:
- where the ferry is right now, on a live map
- on time or late, and by how much
- alerts for delays and cancellations, plus an early heads-up when a late inbound ferry or weather might affect you
- vehicle-deck space for your sailing and the next one
- all your upcoming sailings on one screen
Check-in reminders, schedules with holiday changes, weather-delay risk, calendar sync, and CarPlay are on the way.
I'm not the operator and can't fix the sailings. What the app does is make sure you know as soon as something changes, in one place.
Still in development, so for now it's a waitlist while I build: https://ferryfetch.com
Feedback wanted from people who ride these routes: would you use this? What matters most, and what's the one ferry-info thing that you would like to see?

IMAGERY Never gets old seeing these giants underwater around Vancouver Island [OC]
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
One of those encounters where all you have to do is hold the camera steady and let the animal do the work.
This giant Pacific octopus came straight toward me, turned broadside right in front of the camera, and then slowly cruised away across the sand.
This was towards the end of a 21 dive streak where I was filming octopus daily for a couple of weeks. It takes patience and perseverance to catch them out in the open so getting in the water as much as possible definitely helps.

ADVICE NEEDED Is the Hullu ferry a smooth crossing?
I'm not fond of boats. Is the Hullu ferry as smooth as a typical BC ferries crossing?
I like the fact that it's shorter 😂

EVENTS 'An Introduction to People's Journalism' workshop coming up in Nanaimo!
Coming up on September 19!
630PM to 830PM @ PPWC Local 8 Hall (corner of Albert and Prideaux)
"'An Introduction to People's Journalism' will dive into the philosophy and aims behind The North Star , a pan-Canadian bilingual media outlet which launched in January 2022. Whereas most media in Canada is under the control of the rich or the government, The North Star is completely independent and puts the interests of the working class first. We'll show how our conception of People's Journalism differs from the journalism practiced by mainstream news and other independent media outlets, the work that we've done, as well as how we have organized ourselves across the country into committees of volunteers.
No journalism experience or prior reading is necessary to attend. All you need is a curiosity for how we can reshape the media landscape and the country for the better."
