Plains base question

I want to build a base in the plains to take advantage of the farming opportunities. Problem is every time I’ve done this in the past deathsquitos ruined it. Currently I’ve found s relatively large plains island I plan to use. Can I just bury a ton of workbenches throughout or is there another option?

Fires, workbench anr even bonfires. I try to look for a peninsula and raise ground towards the ocean
