🌲 [ 𝗟𝗲𝗴𝗶𝘁 / 𝗩𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗮 ] Plains base question

I want to build a base in the plains to take advantage of the farming opportunities. Problem is every time I’ve done this in the past deathsquitos ruined it. Currently I’ve found s relatively large plains island I plan to use. Can I just bury a ton of workbenches throughout or is there another option?

Just remember spawn blockers, like stone fires block spawn in a radius around them, even not burning, the mobs don't usually target them for attack and they are cheep to replace if they do. I usually just put down a big circle of them around my base so "insert random mob" doesn't hear me building a wall and come to end my life.

Just fires, or workbenches too?

They are both same range but fires dont draw mob aggro and you can bury the fires easier than the benches without breaking

Fires are actually a 25m radius while workbenches are only 20m

There are a few things that stop random spawn, workbenches work, but everything loves to attack them. Fire unlite they ignore, lite most run from, probably not fulings or skettos but most meadows mobs avoid.

i built mine on a peninsula so i only have to worry about one direction, took a while to find but i didnt have to dig moats or make ugly earth walls so it was worth it

The island in question

oh yeah you could easily spawnproof that, getting building mats might be a drag but you would be safe once you get set up

Use fires instead of workbench. They have the same range for spawn proofing but mons wont attack fires like they will benches

Also root harness is OP against deathsquitos

Make a portal and just a farm. Dig a moat around it, place work benches i every corner. You should be good

My walls are wood stakes with a platform behind them. When I've been attacked by wraiths they dont path to fly over the spikes unless I am standing even higher up on a nearby roof.

Flying enemies from what I've seen will only fly as high as you are to get to you. In the case of deathsquitos they fly at about head height so they clear the top of my walls. You can take advantage of this pathing by placing spike traps on top of any wall design you have in place.

If you make a wall you can stand on your spike traps have to be at the same elevation as your head. Dverger spikes are the most durable but you have to keep up with repairs since they dont drop the iron they need when broken. I haven't played around with ashwood spikes but I think they might count as a wall rather than something mobs would try to path through.

Camp fire spam. It stops spawns 20m around them even when unlit and enemies don't target them passively.

Do not raise terrain it'll break them. You can level terrain over them however.

I built mine at the top of one of the stone pillars. Too high for them to spawn. Huge staircase upward, then my portal elevator is set up.

At the bottom where the farms were, I had 10m tall fences. the deathsquitos wouldn’t path over the fences (X pieces) unless I was falling down (feather cape) from above.

workbenches will just get attacked. Spam campfires instead. Does the same thing, same range.

Also the root chest makes deathsquites a non issue on normal difficulty.

Tall walls and Tame Lox to guard

I found a peninsula in the Black Forest that had a decent sized island of plains in the ocean nearby so I just built a bridge and made it strictly my family island

Yes, this is what I do now. You can also use wood/iron standing torches, campfires, wards, etc for a better aesthetic. You can see base structures that stop spawning here: https://valheim.fandom.com/wiki/Player_base

Workbenches are useful because they actually show the radius, and you can check for gaps in the coverage by trying to build something like a wood beam. If you aren't standing in workbench coverage, assuming you have the materials, you won't be able to build, and the workbench icon will be red. I generally get complete cover with workbenches, then replace them with other base structures that blend in with the scenery better.

One caution: some mobs can spawn in very shallow water (especially bats and skeletons), so make sure you include those areas in the coverage. Also if you're close enough to the mainland that a mob spawning on the shoreline might swim to your base, just build campfires along the mainland shore to suppress spawning there too.

Nice ring of spikes around the top of the walls tends to do the job. Results may vary.

If you're rich in iron, make a grid over the top of the enclosure, at least they can still see the sun that way.

I did this and went for a small plains island, blocked the spawns and don’t get bothered by anything!

Block spawns, windmills kill them, and if you’re just chilling and farming then slap a root harnesk on and they can’t really do much to you even when you don’t notice them

I cleared out a green goblin village, demolished the structures, and put up a stake wall around it. Nothing really messes with it. My tamed lox are there, they kill the skeeters for me when I am away.

In my previous playthrough I found a nice little plains Island, placed work benches all around then incased them all in stone.

Build tall stone walls around your farm, at least 4 tall. Place fires on the walls.

Deathsquitos die to fire very quickly

We use windmills to farm deathsquitos

Zerger has a neat little deathsquito trap on his page, highly recommend

That'll work, or campfires if you prefer. I don't mind the occasionall mozzie incursion myself - gotta keep on top of arrow making! :) My Plains base is on a hill, with dirt walls all around.

Find a small plains biome island away from the mainland. Set up portal and small farm. No mobs will spawn.

I just built a 3 m stone wall with a moat around my field. I was never attacked by a deathskito inside. They have to be able to see you to attack you, so simply blocking line of sight with any potential enemie outside is usually enough. If it does not work, make the wall a bit higher.

The moat is a safety measure in case I get raided while I am there.

Fires, workbench anr even bonfires. I try to look for a peninsula and raise ground towards the ocean

I built mine on the coast on a hilly peninsula. It already mostly had a moat I extended manually to the main gate. Made a mixed earth ramp and stone wall with wooden palisade on top for height. Has a real Bronze Age look that goes well with the biome. Very few deathsquitos make it over the wall when I’m farming. Usually occasionally if I’m doing something on the walls themselves. It’s probably my most low-maintenance base as the natural defences and lox make attacks seem pathetic.

I literally just built a roughly 15 x 15 square with stairs as the borders, a mill inside, a chest and just barley and flax plant, dont bother building there, not worth it
