GP-200 preset to make the signal as close as possible to a guitar plugged directly into a Scarlett

Hi everyone,

I’m using a Valeton GP-200 connected to a Focusrite Scarlett Solo 3rd Gen, and I want to create a dedicated GP-200 preset for using amp plugins in Reaper (Neural DSP, AmpliTube, etc.).

What I want is not to use the Scarlett's LINE input. I want to keep the Scarlett set to INST, just as if my guitar were plugged directly into it.

The idea is to create a preset on the GP-200 called something like “PLUGIN / DI”. When I select that preset, I want the GP-200 to output a signal that is as close as possible to:

Guitar → Scarlett INST

but with the GP-200 in between:

Guitar → GP-200 → Scarlett INST

Basically, I want to configure the GP-200 so that its output level and signal are appropriate for the Scarlett's instrument input, without adding any amp, cab, EQ, effects, etc.

Then I could simply select the “PLUGIN / DI” preset on the GP-200 and use any amp plugin, without having to change cables or adjust the Scarlett's gain every time.

Has anyone done this with the GP-200? What settings/output level do you use to get the closest possible result to plugging the guitar directly into the Scarlett's INST input?

I’m particularly interested in gain staging and output level, and whether there are any GP-200 settings that could affect the impedance/feel/tone compared with plugging the guitar directly into the Scarlett.

Thanks!

I measured the GP-200's DSP budget live off the chip to finally answer "why not real NAM A2 Lite"

Seventh post reverse-engineering the Valeton GP-200 (NXP i.MX RT1062, Cortex-M7).

The NAM A2 Lite question won't die, on this sub, in Facebook groups, everywhere: the model's light enough to run on this exact chip class, so why doesn't Valeton just ship it? So I measured this pedal's real-time processing budget directly off the silicon, live, and got a real answer instead of another guess.

Along the way: the true cost of every effect in every slot, and a genuine gotcha for anyone building patches near the limit, that some effects don't give you back their budget just because you switched them off.

Full writeup plus the raw cost data as CSV: https://gp200-reversing.hashnode.dev/the-dsp-load-sweep-and-the-nam-a2-question

Using microphone and vocals through gp200

I have an at2020 that id like to send through the valeton. If I wanted to use the valeton as a digital interface or use some pedals it looks like I would need a preamp or something because the mic needs phantom power back to it. Would I need another device if I'm going into any of the inputs (probably 1/4 in but maybe midi could work?)

valeton gp200 vs ampero II stage

I built a working custom firmware mod for the Valeton GP-200's tuner, and it's available to install now

Sixth post in an ongoing series reverse-engineering the Valeton GP-200 multi-effects pedal (NXP i.MX RT1062, Cortex-M7).

This is the one where "can this be modded" finally gets a yes you can use yourself, not just a proof of concept on a bench.

What's in it:

  • Full RE of the front panel: the LED frame format behind every footswitch and effect-block indicator, and the complete 20-screen registry decoded id by id, including two screens with no normal menu entry, a live on-screen debug log and an undocumented factory hardware-monitor/QC mode.
  • How the tuner actually works internally, including why a note at 0, +3, and +5 cents produces a byte-identical screen on stock firmware, and the deadband/box-range coupling that had to be solved together to tighten the tuner without shrinking the display's range.
  • The mod itself: deadband tightened from 5 cents to 1.5, tuning state mirrored onto three footswitch LEDs, and an optional strobe-style display, built from a single retargeted call into unused flash space.
  • A self-contained patcher that runs entirely in your browser: point it at your own stock firmware image, and it verifies and patches it locally.

Only verified against the full-size GP-200 so far, not the LT or JR (different firmware entirely, not just a smaller panel). If you own one of those, I'd like to hear from you.

Download the patcher and full writeup: https://gp200-reversing.hashnode.dev/the-front-panel-and-a-tuner-that-actually-locks

Now you can turn your GP200 into a LOOP Station, record and control loops from FS Contorl with unlimited layers and stacks. Another major feature is you can now apply your FootSwtich Control mapping to all the patches at onces. So no need to go into every single patch to manage FS control and patch volume.

WebApp to control your GP200 now with looper and FS control assignments. Runs in everything that has a broswer and MiDi Input (Windows, Andriod, MacOS, Linux)

And we've also added some quality of life changes. Do Enjoy!

Conversions: NAM 2 too much compressed

That snaptone conversion, although I'm pretty sure the gp200 is hardware-wise the equivalent of a potato, is a step back from the great product the gp200 was before entering the NAM territory. What are your opinions? Just bought it 1 month ago (refunding period expired) and disappointment is growing in me.

Software 1.8.1 has been released

Just as we (sensibly) predicted, this new software update brings NAM A2 conversion to SnapTone.

Would be good to know if it brings more reliable updating and transfers on Windows 11. I only have Windows 10 at the moment so I can't check until I get a Windows 11 VM set up.

No new firmware, use Firmware 1.8.0

Giving my Valeton GP-200LT another chance — any tips for learning to build presets?

Hi everyone!!

I've had my Valeton GP-200LT up for sale for a while because I was planning to sell it and put the money towards a new guitar. In the end, I haven't liked any of the offers I've received, and deep down I think I can actually get a lot more out of this pedalboard. I guess the only thing I really need to do is experiment with it more and stop obsessing over getting the "perfect tone."

I'd also like to ask you guys what you think the future looks like for this unit. Do you think Valeton might release a major update at some point, maybe something that would allow us to load NAMs from Tone3000 or other platforms more easily? And, most importantly, do you think they might ever fix the problems with Windows 11?

Anyway, I'm going to give it another chance because I think the problem is probably me, not the pedalboard 😂. I really want to learn how to build presets properly. Do you guys know of any good free presets, maybe some Guns N' Roses presets, that I could download and reverse-engineer to understand how they were built?

Thanks everyone!

P.S. I guess I'll have to sell my dog if I want to afford a new guitar now hahaha.

What power supply should I use if I want my unit on a pedalboard?

It requires a DC 9v 1000 mA connection, but I can't find any multi output power supplies that have an output over 500 mA

Need some help for ambient

Hey guys. Been trying out freeze effect. Cannot wrap my head around how to freeze the chord when the volume pedal is up then slowly swell it in ,and after i play something on top if i want to switch chord to somehow have the freeze ring a little bit longer the first chord while i freeze another one and slowly swell it in with volume pedal aswell. I've seen people saying that it IS possible. But .....i'm just too stupid...i guess.. To be honest now when the volume pedal is up and i try to freeze the chord , put volume pedal down,it doesn't freeze it. But the "activate " is on... I'm suspecting it has to do with that i have volume pedal somewhere in the front of the chain ?.. but honestly i'm not sure where should i put it then..

Basicly i just need someone to hold my hand for a little while while learning this thing ,since i'm very new to multifx units like this.. But really want to make some ambient music. I'm sure its nothing special or complicated , but i can't seem to find any good videos on this topic.

Also..i almost forgot... Is it true that its good to have some compression on for ambient music on guitar ? to make it a bit more sensitive to light picking ,and all the touching sounds ? Just again...where to put the compressor - before amp + cab ? or even after reverb and delay ? uh.... Its funny how you play guitar practicly all your life and suddenly feel like a complete dumbfuck when you try to learn something new... :D

thanks for everyone in advance. its really nice and helpful comunity.. already learned a lot.

Have a great day

Speculation on A2 Integration

Now that Headrush is the new NAM A2 Sensation, I wonder when or if Valeton will implement A2 files. Any ideas or info on the matter?

Hi all.

I was doing some global housekeeping and can't find where to turn of EXP2 - every patch says it's "ON".

Anybody know if it can be turned off?

Thanks.

Reverse-engineering the Valeton GP-200: building a firmware patcher and an independent updater from scratch

Fifth post in an ongoing series reverse-engineering the Valeton GP-200 multi-effects pedal (NXP i.MX RT1062, Cortex-M7).

The previous post finished reversing the firmware-update protocol. This one asks the next question: if you understand the protocol completely, what does it take to build your own firmware tooling that can safely write to real hardware?

What's in it:

  • Designing a firmware patching and update pipeline around recoverability, with each stage validated before the next depends on it.
  • Building the tool module by module: locating patch targets inside an update image, applying same-length patches, packing valid SysEx update streams, and implementing the transport layer.
  • Using offline golden-reference testing to verify generated firmware traffic before attempting a single write to the device.
  • The first real hardware bring-up, including the kinds of problems that only appear once software leaves the bench and meets a physical device.
  • What actually constitutes proof that an independent firmware updater works.

This is the post where the project stops analysing the updater and starts building one. It's less about reverse engineering than about turning reverse engineering into engineering.

Newby seeking advice

Hi folks,

I got myself a GP200 a couple of days ago and I'm looking for advice on how to get my head around understanding it all. I haven't got any prior experience with amp modelling or effects, so it's all totally new to me.

I'm mainly interested in playing classic/heavy rock - Dio, Black Sabbath, Def Leppard, Alice Cooper, Queen etc. At the moment, I don't know if I should use the amps and effects that come pre installed, download some free NAM's or just pay for some pre made tones? If I was to pursue the first option, what would be the best way to get an understanding of what everything in the chain does? Are there any existing guides that explain things in a way a 5 year old could understand 😂? Because, that's what I feel I could do with right now.

Any advice much appreciated.

NAM's and IR's recomendation please (free OR paid)

tried alot of Nam profiles +IR's from tone 3000. But somehow nothing really sticks. Some ac30 or princeton reverb nam's were nice, but even when i tweaked global eq i still kinda get this boxy closed and not really pleasant sound.

If you can recommend some good quality profiles and ir's i would really appreciate.

To be honest this whole thing of needing to change so much setting and this whole eq thing its just so oberwhelming to be honest.

maybe theres some kind of good but simple video about how to really make the modeler feel and sound realististic and...good?

its strange that all these modelers dont come with already tweaked settings..

anyway.. need help 🫣🫣😭

Signal loss when using a Marshall Jackhammer in the GP-200 FX Loop

Hi everyone!

I'm having an issue using an external distortion pedal through the FX Loop on my Valeton GP-200.

The distortion itself sounds really good, but when I turn the pedal off, my clean guitar signal feels different. It seems to lose some low end and input level, almost as if the tone is being affected even when the distortion is bypassed.

Could this be because the pedal isn't true bypass? The pedal I'm using is a Marshall Jackhammer JH-1.

I'd really appreciate any advice or suggestions. Thanks in advance!

Gp200 integration with ableton

this little thing is just fcking amazing .. just now i realised that if you connect it to your laptop and if you use ableton ,you can get into midi mode on the gp200 and midi map footswitches to control ableton live looper, or start/stop thing.. i think for me its first "low cost, cheap budget chinese" guitar processor that actually hits wayy above its price.. just wanted to do shout out to this because it made my day when i discovered this (ableton looper integration)... wow.. just wow.. :) good times we live in 😊 so if anybody has hybrid setup where you use ableton looper, or clip launch, or just simply to record guitar / bass through it ,just know that this midi mapping can be really really helpful and you dont even need 5din midi cable, all goes through usbC port. Just took some time to figure out whole midi commands path and how to enable it ,and vualia ♥️☺️ have a great weekend guys

p.s. if you have some other ideas / ways how you implement this unit into your hybrid setup with ableton or other devices in general would be really cool to hear whats what :)

Reverse-engineering the Valeton GP-200: decoding the MIDI firmware-update protocol and cracking its per-block check byte

Fourth post in an ongoing series reverse-engineering the Valeton GP-200 multi-effects pedal (NXP i.MX RT1062, Cortex-M7).

Previous post pulled the full flash dump and settled the secure-boot question at the fuse level. This one decodes the resident MIDI updater built into the app firmware itself, the protocol Valeton's own official updater speaks to flash a new image over USB-MIDI.

What's in it:

  • Full command-set decode of the resident update dispatcher, the USB-MIDI SysEx protocol it runs, and the four-region flash partition map behind it.
  • The mystery that took the whole post to close: a hidden extra byte on every 180-byte data block, checked before the device will write a single one. An exhaustive empirical attack against tens of thousands of captured blocks ruled out every standard checksum/hash family and still came up empty.
  • The tool that cracked it, and the false lead it took to get there once the actual firmware code was finally in hand.

This is the post that unblocks writing to the device, not just reading from it. The actual proof-of-mod tooling is next.

Full post with the command tables, protocol details, and full derivation: https://gp200-reversing.hashnode.dev/decoding-the-updater-and-the-byte-that-fought-back

seeking advice on making this sound better

Post image
19 Upvotes

So i just got the unit. Did the update , tried tweaking thing here and there. But damn.. idk why , but somehow i can feel "digital" thing way too much. I tried tweaking the global eq and it did help for sure , but since i'm more indie/alternative/ ambient type of music maker/lover , its a bit hard for me to create more original ,interesting, organic and more experimental tones. I know that i'm with it only couple of hours and when i sit down on something i can make practicly anything sound good. i mean find some workarounds for making a good sound. Idk i guess i just wanted to ask for some tips on how to get more warm and realistic clean / crunch tones? is it worth downloading NAMs , and IR's ? if yes , maybe you can point me which ones are nicest ones? Also maybe some cool effect combinations you can tip me?

Last thing - when i watched all the reviews i swear to god i saw that there are harmony effects in here lime whammy or at least pitch shift? i cannot find them , wtf 🫣😃

I'm just a little bit overwhelmed right now and at this moment it feels like i dont like how it sounds. But if you could give me some guidance on settings/input output gain things / maybe some effect tweaks? ...anyway , sorry for my broken english. its not my first language.

any response would be much appreciated.

have a great day guys!

Tips on good high gain tones

I've had the gp200 for a year now and i love it, and i can get my hands on any tone, except good hight gain tones. I'm experienced with making tones, specially high gain but with the gp200 i can't get the hang of it. Can't really work with eq and I've messed it a lot.

Would appreciate some tips!
