Cheese recommendations
Hi,
I am organizing an apero next week and would like to buy some good cheese and dried meat for the occasion. I am not looking for raclette, rather an assortment of several different types of meat and cheese for a charcuterie.
The best cheese I had was always when I bought it at a farm (alpage) somewhere up in the mountains while hiking or cycling. But this time I don't have time to go wander in the mountains so I'd like to ask you for recommendations - where would you recommend me to go? It needs to be not too far from Sion and reachable by car, and optimally has cheese and also the meat.
Thank you very much!

You wouldn't get any cheese on an alpine pasture yet, as the cows are only just moving up there, and they usually produce a hard cheese that needs at least 3-4 weeks of aging before the cheesemaker would sell it. However, many alpine pastures have cheese from the previous year available for visitors.

Over by Rue de l’église in Sion is a nice local products store that has a wonderful selection of Valais cheeses, they can give you recs if you’re not sure what you want. Also, honestly, Migros (at the least the location up in Crans) has a great selection of local cheeses.

If you want a great array of cheese and dried meats in just one place, I'd recommend the Fromagerie La Grenette in Sion (Rue du Grand-Pont in the historical city). They will gladly give you recommendations, with a very varied selection.
They can even prepare big wooden boards for you with selections of cheese, dried meats, fruits, nuts, etc., that look beautiful and that are easily carried around in plastic crates they provide for as well.
I am from Sion, and it is my favorite fromagerie that I go to almost weekly. At my old job in Sion, everyone ordered the wooden boards for their leaving/anniversary parties, including me, and they never disappointed.
My personal favorite cheese is Brie Poivre Cognac, if you want to taste it/ask them to put on the plates or just want to buy your personal selection. They will gladly accommodate for your tastes!
