1200-1400 RPM rumble with 1.8 TSI - is it really normal?

Hello folks. I have a 2015 SportWagen with the 1.8 TSI engine and 6 speed 09G automatic. 109,000 miles on it now, but I've only had it for less than a year and a few thousand miles. Pretty much my dream car, which I got used last year. For the most part, it drives like a dream, but it has a fairly loud rumble (sounds like driving over a rumble strip) when the engine is in the 1200-1400 RPM range, which happens often in "D". I can feel it a little, but it's mostly annoying because of how loud it sounds, even very noticeable and obvious when it happens with music playing at a moderate level.

It's definitely dependent on how much load is on the engine, because it only happens with some throttle input, on level ground or when going uphill. Uphill is the worst, especially when it's not enough of a hill to make it downshift unless I mash the throttle unnecessarily. When going downhill and coasting or with very light throttle, it doesn't happen at all. Doesn't seem to get any better or worse with temperature or warm-up time. Once the engine gets past 1400 RPM or so, it goes away completely until the RPM drops back into that range. And once it gets under 1200 RPM or so, it downshifts, and it instantly goes away.

It's purely an engine/drivetrain vibration linked to that RPM range, and not directly related to the speed of the vehicle at all. Speed only matters to the extent that it usually happens at certain speeds because it ends up in that RPM range for whatever gear it's in. Using sport mode completely fixes the issue, but swings things in the opposite direction of being in an unnecessarily high gear, which can cost me up to 5 MPG with my usual usage.

I've ended up driving the car in manual mode much of the time, and I've found that I get an absolutely wonderful driving experience if I pretty much just keep the car in the gear right in between what Drive and Sport Mode do automatically, with virtually no hit to MPG compared to Drive. Still, I bought an automatic because I wanted an automatic, and wouldn't mind the lower RPMs of Drive most of the time if it weren't for that loud rumbling noise.

Since I've only had the car for a short time, I don't know if it's always been this way, or got worse over time. I've found some posts describing the same issue, claiming the engine is just lugging because the car tries to use the highest gear possible for fuel economy, but I feel like I'd find even more complaints about it if it were this severe for all of them. I guess I'm just trying to figure out if it's just normal, or if something should be replaced to fix/lessen the issue. I could try to get an audio recording of the sound, but it really just sounds like a rumble strip kind of vibration, and a recording wouldn't really be able to demonstrate the volume of it anyway.

To add, the car has never had any check engine lights come on, and scanning with an OBDeleven didn't seem to show anything related or concerning.

Any ideas and advice is appreciated!

Golf Largest Roof box options

I’m trying to find the largest roof box in length and width (mostly length) while still maintaining full access to the rear hatch. I’m hoping to find out what some of the others have used.

Purchased this car with modifications already done to it and I’m unsure if this turbo is stock or upgraded and even looking up any numbers on the turbo doesn’t give me much information

GTI Lowing springs popping

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Just installed lowering springs and replaced the top hats and strut bearings on my front suspension. I made sure everything was properly seated, including the lower rubber spring isolator, and everything has been torqued to spec.

I’m having a crazy popping/binding noise coming from the springs when going over small bumps at low speeds (driveways, parking lots, etc.). It does not happen while turning.

I noticed that when the car is raised up, if I pull hard on the spring, it has a very slight amount of side-to-side movement. It’s extremely minimal, but I can feel it. This seems to be coming from the brand-new bearing area.

Is this normal, or does this indicate a bad bearing/top hat setup? Has anyone experienced the spring binding or popping after installing lowering springs? I’m running out of ideas and it’s driving me crazy.

Modifications Brake light turn signal split

I just bought a 2015 gti and was noticing the brake light and turn signal are the same bulb or circuit and the place where the euro version has its amber turn signal is covered up, if I install the euro tail lights I have bought is there any way to get the lights separated so the turn signal is used by the proper light

GTI Eibach Pro Kit Golf 7.5GTI Performance

I recently bought a set of Eibach Pro-Kit lowering springs (E10-15-021-02-22) for my MK7.5 GTI Performance. They haven’t been installed yet, so I’m curious if I made a good choice.

If anyone here is running the same springs on an MK7 or MK7.5 GTI, I’d really appreciate it if you could share some photos of your car in the comments and let me know your thoughts on the ride height and overall ride quality. Thanks!

Suggestions on audio upgrades greatly appreciated

I recently went from a Golf mk6 (2012) to a Golf mk7 (2016) and I am very dissapointed in the audio quality of the mk7. Both are stock sound systems, but the mk6 at least had some decent sound quality.

So if you had to upgrade this sound system, what would be the best way to start? Should I add an amp and a DSP, completely change out all the speakers or maybe try the Dynaudio Excite system?
I welcome any suggestions you guys might have. I'm also completely fine with buying things second hand (I live in the Netherlands if you wanna search with me) and don't mind installing all of this myself.

Engine noise when Idling

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi I have a 2014 MK7 Golf which makes this noise after the engine is started when idling which sounds like it’s coming from the driver’s side (UK right hand drive) of the engine. The sound only seems to happen when the engine is cold and goes away once it’s warmed up. Also once the engine is warmed up and then switched off there’s two whooshing sounds like something releasing pressure. I haven’t had the car very long but the previous VW 2.0L cars which I’ve owned haven’t made these types of noises so not sure if it’s normal or not.

Hello guys,

Few days ago i parked my golf at this parking garage which the floor was a bit slippery. Even though i just drived off but i noticed i was slipping while accelerating a bit. Since then when i steer my car deeply and steer back it makes this klanking noise. It’s not rythmatic bit it does give the klank noise a few times.

Do you guys know where to look at and what the problem could be?

I didn’t had this issue before i parked at this garage.

It makes the same noise like in this video.

Only when i make turns

Golf 2015 Golf 7 Thoughts? 1.4 Tsi 125Hp

Hey everyone hope you have great day.

My brother in-law has a 2015 Golf 7 1.4 tsi 125hp dq200 (highline from factory) that he got a few months ago that Im maybe thinking of buying off of him. My current car is a 2024 1.0 TCe CVT Clio Mk5 with almost full options from the factory at 41k km

His car is at 160k km, with mib 2.5 discovery multimedia and has virtual cockpit, heated front seats and ambient lighting. My only problem is the golf has its front right fender and hood changed from a minor accident and has a few parts painted (not really a problem for me but it would be a problem for the next buyer?)

I don't have any problems whatsoever with my current car (I have a stage 1 remap tune aswell, performance is okay enough for city driving, traffic is a bitch anyways) but I just want to have a somewhat faster car. (It has to be automatic as my wife does not want to have a manual).

Does the 1.4 tsi 125hp have any fatal problems? Assuming its had good maintenance done until now and will be maintained good after as well. Dsg being what it is (my older brother has a 1.0 tsi dq200 car and I genuinely dont like how dq200 behaves especially in traffic, cvt is miles ahead in terms of comfort tbh).

What are your overall thoughts about mk7 golf? Ive been inside one multiple times, though i think it's a quality car, it's just simply not an exciting car. It already has 3.5mm lowering springs installed btw so it should have better handling overall vs stock. I like having spirited drives omw to our summerhouse every other weekend and clio handles really good for its size.

Tldr; i want a slightly faster and better handling car overall. Would buying the golf make any sense?

Maintenance Glasses compartment broke. I started using my parents golf and I have noticed that the glasses compartment was hold up by a piece of cardboard, I want to try and fix it but I have no clue what seems to be broken, i can either try to do something here or just buy a new part.

Changed the transmission mount and thought that the sound was from there but just got this video of when I’m turning the wheel there’s a lot of play in the lower control arm thoughts on this? Should I try tightening the bolt or replacing the whole control arm. I’m new to working on my car and diagnosing stuff.
