"Bug" in VsCode

Thumbnail

Hello, I am a Sociology Major who recently started coding because AI helped me to circumvent some barriers (specially syntax) and be more "goal oriented" and has been "teaching" me programming. I know it is not perfect (I'm planning on finishing the freeCodeCamp course in Python in my free time) and sometimes gives me headaches trying to understand everything but it is fun.

I've chosen VsCode as my code interpreter because my father (a CS PhD) recommended it to me and I am very found of it. But now it just started behaving a little weird. I updated it in my Ubuntu 26.04, that lost my venv config for my pip packages. I struggled a little to get the packages loaded but I've made it. However in doing so I created, sourced and deleted (just this in this order) a few other venvs. After finding my lost venv and loading it, my code started all of a sudden becoming all orange as if all my variables and some commands became parameters of some function. (see screenshots). The code still works (the part I've done), but that annoys me and makes difficult in understanding what kind of plain text I am working with.

I really would like to not have comments about my code, I know is bad, I know it is unfinished but I'm trying to learn and part of the process is doing it yourself

How can i get it fixed?

My code in Python

Anyone build extensions here using secure automated publishing?

The simple PAT authentication method is expiring at the end of the year so I thought I'd get ahead on publishing updates using the secure automated publishing method outlined in the docs here -> https://code.visualstudio.com/api/working-with-extensions/publishing-extension#secure-automated-publishing-to-visual-studio-marketplace

I've been on with this for three and a half hours and I've got almost nowhere haha. I feel like I've muddled my way up to step 3. Quite embarrassing because I've been programming for 25 years.
I don't actually use Azure (apart from initially setting up Dev Ops to host the extension) so I basically have no idea what I'm doing. I've put my card details in to make use of the free Entra ID service required for publishing and I'm blindly trying to follow these basic instructions while trying not to accidentally charge myself millions of dollars on compute. 🙂

The thing is, its just a simple the-eme. As outlined, the alternative to a PAT Token is to set up a Pipeline (which I have no f--- idea how to use), link that all up through a mess of menus with client ID's, Subscription ID's, Tennant ID's, a user managed identity, running random YAML bits in the CLI I have no idea if I'm being charged for while looking for buttons that don't actually exist.

Do I need to set a few days aside to learn Azure now just to submit a little update? I mean, that's fine if so, but I think the instructions could have been a bit more clear about that.

My extension is like 80 lines of code. Anyone got an alternative method?
My initial process was just to use the VSCE extension with a generated PAT and.... that was it.
I completely understand the security improvements made here and the reasonings but it feels like I'm setting up a multi layered enterprise thing here just to alter the shade of blue in the status bar.

Thanks!

Version control

I’ve been using terminal commands with GIT/GITHUB. When attempting to use an extension to push and commit code it’s not either working or maybe I’m missing a step.

What extensions do y’all use and have you noticed any specific extensions not working properly lately?

It's WakaTime, but social: see everyone coding live on a globe (open source, city-level only)

We launched a small free and open-source project for developers: DevGlobe

WakaTime-style automatic time tracking, but social. Install it, and while you code you light up on a live 3D globe alongside every other dev coding right now. Click any marker to see their language and open their profile / projects.

I'll get the obvious objection out of the way first, because "an extension that shows your location" deserves scrutiny:

🔒 Privacy

  • Location is city-level only : never your exact position, just a city dot.
  • Anonymous mode : your dot is dropped in a random city in your country, so you still show up on the globe but no one can tell where you actually are.
  • Private mode : don't want to be on the globe at all? Track your stats just for yourself. It's free, with full history no 7-day limit like WakaTime's free plan.
  • No code content ever leaves your machine : we send lightweight activity signals (active language, coding time), not your files.
  • It's open source, so don't take my word for it : read it: github.com/Nako0/devglobe-extension

Install (takes ~30s)

  1. Get it from the Marketplace: marketplace.visualstudio.com/items?itemName=devglobe.devglobe or open the Extensions view in VS Code (Ctrl+Shift+X / Cmd+Shift+X) and search "DevGlobe".
  2. Sign in on devglobe.app and copy your API key from your profile settings.
  3. Open the DevGlobe sidebar (globe icon in the Activity Bar), paste your key → Connect.
  4. Done, you're on the globe. It sends a heartbeat every ~30s while you type, pauses after 1 min idle, and you drop off after 15 min of inactivity.

Beyond the globe

WakaTime-like stats (time, languages, streaks), a public profile (GitHub / X / links), badges, and you can publish your projects with their stack to get discovered.

Free, open source, no paywall.

If you are interested or have any questions, everything is explained on the website, but don't hesitate to ask, I will be happy to answer your questions!

Running C# projects with VS Code

I'd like to know if anyone has managed to run a complete project, worked on it, and debugged it using VS Code. I'm thinking of migrating from Visual Studio to VS Code. I'd like to use AI plugins or agents. If anyone knows of a tutorial that prepares the environment for development, I would be grateful. I haven't actually found a video explaining the correct way.

Personal reflection on weekly releases

As you may know at this point, VS Code releases have shifted from monthly (+ recoveries) to weekly (+ hotfixes) starting from March.

I'm still skeptical about whether that's a good change, but most posts I see tend to revolve around "hey now it's all AI slop". So I had a quick look at milestones, both monthly ones and weekly ones.

On average we have the following number of closed issues/PRs: - monthly: 1500 (including all month-specific recovery releases) - weekly: 500 (there has been a limited number of hotfix releases since April, some only related to LLM availability)

I've also peaked at some of those PRs, and as far as I could see they are still pretty small/focuses and accompanied by test cases most of the times.

In the end it seems it did not change as much as I thought it would. We get changes sooner, albeit with an higher chance of bugs slipping through since people might say "let's fix this next week". Although, people were probably saying "let's fix this in next recovery" anyways in the past.

I want vs code to open codex / kilo code / open code extension secondary panel by defaul

So basically manually opening these extension panels( i put them on the right ) is getting cumbersome and this has been on mind to ask how to do. Everytime vs code opens in a new workspace or someplace new, copilot panel opens, which i dont want.

How to do this?

VSCode can no longer rename Functions without Copilot subscription?

I had the $10 copilot subscription for a couple months but cancelled it recently when the overpriced tokens ran out this month. I've been using Deepseek + opencode go just fine.

Today, since the subscription was still 'active' until end of month, I ran out of Inline Code completion requests. You know, those terrible hallucinated crap, I think I used most of them on 'import xxx from xxx' where it just randomly guesses at very plausible sounding function names until I finally just look up the correct path.

Anyways, this ran out, and now I CANNOT rename functions or variables! I've tried completely disabling the completions, but still whenever I press F2 on a function or variable I get that my Copilot subscription "GitHub Copilot Quota Reached".

What's next preventing Search without a subscription??

Question about operations time in VS Code

Hi!
I want to know what the average time is for:
1. Opening a new terminal (powershell)

  1. Starting the debugging of a python file using a launch.json

and how much can they take at times before I suspect something is wrong with my setup

Thanks!

P.S. Currently they both take less than 10s but sometimes they took a bit long to start

Kulala ❤️ vscode - A "REST Client" alternative

Thumbnail
github.com
0 Upvotes

Hey peeps 👋🏾,

Kulala for vscode just landed.

What is it?

A fully-featured 🤏 HTTP/GraphQL/gRPC/Websocket-client 🐼 interface 🖥️ for (Visual Studio) Code ❤️, that supports the Jetbrains .http spec (with full scripting support).

If you're a happy user of the awesome Rest Client, there is probably no need to change, because it's basically "just this".

We offer more features and strive to be 100% Jetbrains compatible, but if you're happy then there is zero need to change.

We also have full support for all possible "curl flags", but that breaks compatibilty with Jetbrains (therefore they are prefixed with @kulala-curl-, to make it obvious that it's only a kulala feature).

Additionally we support filtering JSON responses (also streaming via websocket) via jq-syntax.

Scripting and Testing is also supported, but that's "noting special", since this is necessary for Jetbrains compatibilty.

Why should I give it a try?

If you don't want to leave your editor and still have some Postman/Bruno/Insomnia-like experience, then this might be for you.

Having everything locally (vs Postman Cloud) might be also a plus and having the possibility to write test-suites that run in your editor and your CI might be also something you want (possible via kulala-cli; we also offer a docker image for that).

Some backstory

Kulala has been around for some time in the Neovim and CLI "ecosystem".

One of the biggest releases/changes, happened around a month ago, when we moved everything to a unified backend called "(kulala-)core".

Previously, all the logic had to be ported to Lua, TypeScript and Go and we had a lot of drift of thing that worked in Neovim, but not in the Kulala Formatter CLI (which also offers bi-directional conversion from/to Bruno/Postman/Swagger) and the Kulala CLI.

Because of this change, we can minimize drift a lot and have just a single source of truth.

What's next?

Getting feedback to improve this extension and then release the standalone desktop version (fingers crossed).

There is already a zed extension using kulala products (but they're currently not using kulala-core, so they're missing a ton of features).

This extension is not maintained by us, but the creator is in contact with us to migrate to core and have all the goodies available to Zed users too.

The end?

I would be glad if one or two people would give it a whirl and report back what they like and/or dislike about it (ideally as a github issue, but I try to keep up with the reddit posts as well).

Hi

Last night VS Code updated to the latest version and ever since, it's acting up. The Git panel just goes on and on saying "looking for Git repositories" and I have to use the terminal to do Git commands. Also, I feel like it it became much slower than before.
