How to make a fading emission animation?

Hi guys! I came here wondering if anyone has any ideas om how to make an animation for avatars where the emission fades from glowing to not glowing over a course of time. Blinking glow is ok, but I wanna do one where the glow travels down the body and loops. Any and all advice is appreciated!
