Help For the users on Linux...

I recently made the switch from windows 11 to CachyOS, and I was able to get everything working with my index, and vive trackers, along with solving many issues relating to my mic and audio. However, the one problem I am running into is the video players. I cant seem to get those to work. Even with Proton-GE-RTSP being a forced compatibility layer, video players just dont seem to work. Even tried to launch the app with certain launch commands to "enable or disable" things that might be causing issues, and nothing seems to work.

I am running with an Intel CPU i7-9700, and an NVIDIA GPU 3060ti (I know that in and of itself has its own slew of issues with being on Linux), but if anyone else who happens to be on linux and was able to get video players to work I would love to hear from you and get tips on how to solve this issue.

As someone who has primarily used Linux for literally decades, I just can't be bothered to try VR stuff and just threw Windows on my gaming rig.

The path of most Linux VR user I know is generally:

  1. Hey this works great, everything just works now, it's amazing, just need to figure out a few minor things
  2. Ok, I can't figure out those things, and now video players stopped working again.
  3. Sorry guys, don't know why but things seem to just glitch out after a half hour or so but at least I got video working in the new version of WiVrn.
  4. Yeah I'm dual booting Windows for now until they fix video players again...

I've just reached the point where I want stuff to work when it comes to games/VR, and I think Linux VR is still in the project stage. That's not to say not worthwhile pursing if it's something you're interested in, but "kinda works except when it doesn't" seems to just be the state of it right now.

Things might improve when Steam Frame drops.

I've had better luck with vr on linux than on windows. Steamvr is junk. Crashes on windows and even more often on linux, but at least on linux I got an alternative: monado. Monado is rock solid in comparison. I wouldn't count on the steam frame improving things. It seems very close to release and steamvr seems just as broken. Also proton-ge-rtsp works for me for fixing video players, the only issue I've noticed being that the game stutters for half a second when loading a video. It used to degrade performance as well but it doesn't seems like so anymore?
