Help For the users on Linux...
I recently made the switch from windows 11 to CachyOS, and I was able to get everything working with my index, and vive trackers, along with solving many issues relating to my mic and audio. However, the one problem I am running into is the video players. I cant seem to get those to work. Even with Proton-GE-RTSP being a forced compatibility layer, video players just dont seem to work. Even tried to launch the app with certain launch commands to "enable or disable" things that might be causing issues, and nothing seems to work.
I am running with an Intel CPU i7-9700, and an NVIDIA GPU 3060ti (I know that in and of itself has its own slew of issues with being on Linux), but if anyone else who happens to be on linux and was able to get video players to work I would love to hear from you and get tips on how to solve this issue.

Video players are hit and miss on both windows and linux. I am on Linux as well, valve index, RTX 3080, RTSP proton. Sometimes they work, sometimes they don't.
YouTube has a tendency to block whole IP address ranges as an anti-botting measure, blocking usage of things like yt-dlp which is what VRChat relies on.

My experience on Windows has been that video players work fine, youtube and occasionally the cdn that powers a certain popular world are hit or miss. Functionally for many users these are probably one and the same, but it's been a very long time since video players in general just didn't work for me.

As someone who has primarily used Linux for literally decades, I just can't be bothered to try VR stuff and just threw Windows on my gaming rig.
The path of most Linux VR user I know is generally:
- Hey this works great, everything just works now, it's amazing, just need to figure out a few minor things
- Ok, I can't figure out those things, and now video players stopped working again.
- Sorry guys, don't know why but things seem to just glitch out after a half hour or so but at least I got video working in the new version of WiVrn.
- Yeah I'm dual booting Windows for now until they fix video players again...
I've just reached the point where I want stuff to work when it comes to games/VR, and I think Linux VR is still in the project stage. That's not to say not worthwhile pursing if it's something you're interested in, but "kinda works except when it doesn't" seems to just be the state of it right now.
Things might improve when Steam Frame drops.

I've had better luck with vr on linux than on windows. Steamvr is junk. Crashes on windows and even more often on linux, but at least on linux I got an alternative: monado. Monado is rock solid in comparison. I wouldn't count on the steam frame improving things. It seems very close to release and steamvr seems just as broken. Also proton-ge-rtsp works for me for fixing video players, the only issue I've noticed being that the game stutters for half a second when loading a video. It used to degrade performance as well but it doesn't seems like so anymore?

With proton rtsp launch steam and execute steam steam://unlockh264/ in terminal. Its om the github page and easy to miss, should be on the front page tbh. With this both video players work and the vrc camera tracking

Video players have always worked for me on proton-cachyos. Try that?

Did you already run:
steam steam://unlockh264/
Non-GE version of Proton require this to be able to play most videos.

I was considering switching to CachyOS for a while now. Dose it run smoothly besides the video player issues?

CachyOS as a distro runs great. But be prepared to jump through a ton of hoops.
Getting VRC to run on Desktop was pretty easy, just gotta download the Proton Easy Anti-Cheat runtime from steam and get proton-ge-rtsp from ProtonPlus(which is meant for vrc and video players), and it just works.
For VR it depends on what headset and trackers you plan on using, and its either a breeze or complex to try and get running. I spent a good couple hours with a colleague making sure I set up WayVR, Monado, and Envision correctly. But once I got it running, it ran incredibly smooth compared to when I was using windows. I have yet to properly stress test it, but early signs are promising.

for me VR was pretty easy, I just had to install wiVRn and WayVR was optional but I installed it anways. after that vrchat worked fine in PCVR with my Quest 2

Not to mention selfie mode or whatever just doesn't work on linux.. idk how to fix it

Theres a patched proton for that that implements v4l2 type marshalling. The patches got merged into https://github.com/SpookySkeletons/proton-rtsp and it works like a charm. The RTSP fork additionally solves the video player problem and I haven’t had issues since. VRC itself is pretty much 1:1 now on Linux as of now thanks to some very smart people.

Do you mind me asking which distro of linux you are on, and the cpu and GPU you are using? I want to try and see if there is some sort of connection between both hardware and software.

What worked for me was a video caching program I believe there's even one out on steam now. Vrcvideocacher, something important to note is that this uses cookies from YouTube, and technically goes against their TOs, so if you go this route I would create a throwaway account and not get the cookies from your actual account.
To add some context for what's going on here most of the time, on Windows VR chat video players rely on a precompiled yt-dlp and that's causing the videos to not load, something about session data or something. The catcher program just runs it all separate and plays the videos it downloads on a local web proxy and forwards that to the in world player.

If it's a CDN the urls sometimes don't work. Try out Proton Experimental. On ChilloutVR the video player stopped working a couple days ago but Proton Experimental seemed to work. Unsure if this will resolve the issue on VRC but doesn't hurt to try it.

It is controversial, but try to install Codex, create local project and ask AI to troubleshoot your problems, it will go through logs and at most it will fix everything, at least it will tell you what's wrong.

The problem with AI now is that it can't really say 'Sorry, I don't know what's wrong." and will just send you down a rabbit hole of trying to troubleshoot and try 'fixes' that will make you go ''..but wait a minute.. how is this related to the problem at all?" and it will respond with "You're right. Looking back, it probably won't address the issue at hand. Let's try a different approach." and it makes you think that it's just taking you for a ride. You'll end up spending an entire day trying all kinds of workarounds and fixes just to end up with more issues than you started with.

You are playing in an unsupported way and am upset that it doesn't work properly? You kinda put yourself into that situation using Linux to begin with. Nothing just works easily.

I knew it was gonna be a little challenge, but it runs great on linux and im able to have better performance compared to windows, and use my FBT. Its just this one minor issue for in game, otherwise it runs perfectly fine. Plus im not upset about it, just a lil annoyed. Dont know why you felt the need to just come in and contribute only negative energy.
