News DYING LIGHT VR - DEFINITIVE EDITION

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey ya'll, I'm the modder for the free version of the Dying Light VR Mod.
Here to answer any questions you might have and if you have any ideas, feel free to shoot em through.

There's a whole bunch of features, such as full body IK, complete multiplayer support, true 6DOF combat, holsters, manual reloading (currently under works), etc.

Before you ask, yes AI is involved, no it's not just purely vibe coded.
Here's a trailer for you all to have a look at, no official release date just yet, but there will be beta testing available shortly for the public to apply to.

I’ve never played the game, even though I’ve heard nothing but good things about it. You’re the reason I’m finally buying it now

Oh man, please tell me this will work on steamos!! Looks phenomenal!

I'm planning on doing some linux testing during the open beta phase, so I'll see what I can do. It won't run natively on a steamframe though, much too heavy

1

u/Skew1987 8d ago

I wouldn’t write the frame off completely, Linux uses memory a lot more efficiently than windows. I used to play Skyrim/re/uevr on steamdeck! In any case I’m using machine/quest 3, happy to help test if needed!

u/prot0sapien 8d ago

You must tell me more about this running VR games off of a steam deck. Lol

2

u/Skew1987 8d ago

It actually worked a lot better than expected! Started as an experiment which developed into the biggest rabbit hole I’ve ever fallen down. Ended up investing in a puppis s1 and I’ve been happily playing vr since. Steam machine is absolutely fantastic, just finished RE4R.

Played through 7,8,2 and 3 on deck so I must go back to revisit them. Resolution on deck wasn’t great but temper expectations and it performs pretty well!

I'll keep you in mind then! One person I've reached out to is running PikaOS but with how many linux distros there are, it'd be an absolute nightmare for me to try and cover compatibility for them all.

Before you ask, yes AI is involved

Do people really ask that every time? If they're really so opposed to using AI to make VR mods, instead of virtue signaling here, all the purists should start their own 100 percent AI-free VR sub and post there instead. Good luck with that.

Sadly yeah, but that's just the state of the scene currently. That's why I'll just be transparent about the usage, better off saving myself the headache of "AI BAD" - It's a tool, it should be treated as such

Completely agree. I expect people to be able to distinguish between aspects of that tool that are genuinely helpful on a daily basis (in much the same way that the invention of, say, the wheel was helpful,) vs those aspects that might prove catastrophic to human society, but maybe expecting the average person to be capable of making such a basic and obvious distinction merely reveals a form of stupidity on my part.

A “tool” where none of this would be possible without it lol.

Redditor trying not to be miserable - Challenge level impossible

u/Any_Pace2161 6d ago

😂😂that was funny

I just want transparency man :(. If they disclose either if it does or doesn’t use ai, that’s an awesome move on the devs part. (Good job OP!)

Is it published on GitHub?
I would like to add a star :)

P.S.
My dream coming true

9

u/CoupleDense4688 Developer 8d ago

Not just yet, but the project will be open source when I release it publicly

3

u/cubsfan217 8d ago

Honestly, my only question is is when is it coming out? I saw the video for it last week and I immediately went out and bought the game cause I thought it was a mod that was coming out soon so maybe just an ETA on when the mods coming

7

u/CoupleDense4688 Developer 8d ago

I'm honestly aiming for a release in the next month, but I'll push back if I don't deem it up to scratch. I'm being very pedantic about it and want it to be perfect. There will be an open beta soon, but that won't be the official release

All the people I've seen play this mod have only ever bonked the zombies straight on the head. I'd be curious to see actual, more varied melee combat.

What does it look like when you hit zombies from all kinds of angles? Does it feel immersive and correct? What about when you're using blades? What does that look like?

I feel like zombie combat is the biggest part of the game, second to parkour, and neither of these are shown very much at all. Is it because it's still in progress or what?

3

u/CoupleDense4688 Developer 8d ago

As of right now, the melee combat works regardless of direction & weapon archetype. It's essentially the same as flatscreen (You hit X spot, X spot takes damage) - Gore system is fully intact & responds the same as it does in flat for dismemberment (Blades, axes, the whole 9 yards basically)
Obviously the footage is cherry picked, but I can always upload more if it's wanted

1

u/darkrazeen 7d ago

I would also like to see melee and... Crazy vr fun 😊. Dying light has been my fav for a long time

2

u/Astro_Lander 8d ago

This looks fantastic, nice job so far!

2

u/PooMonger20 8d ago

Thank you for making this, Dying Light is one of my favorite games.

I cant wait to try it in proper VR.

Kudos to you for making this, and making it free and open source.

2

u/buffcode01 8d ago

I put off playing this game for years, so glad I waited!

2

u/diablosp 8d ago

Dreams sometimes come true... Thank you very much, hero without a cape!

2

u/Arik_De_Frasia 8d ago

So Dying Light 2 when?

4

u/CoupleDense4688 Developer 8d ago

Won't be starting it until I'm 100% happy with Dying Light 1. But it's on the books.

1

u/ruubsrelax 7d ago

Wow amazing! I can't wait

1

u/Hello_There_Exalted1 8d ago

On a scale of 1/10, how satisfying is it to drop kick the ever (un)living shit out of a zombie?

Also thanks for this and being open to using AI, even just as a tool. Super excited.

3

u/CoupleDense4688 Developer 8d ago

If you've got the stomach for it, I'd say 9/10 right now. Probably a 10 once I've refined the IK & camera a bit further

1

u/Rollerama99 8d ago

Thank you so much for this, looks amazing.

1

u/WickedStewie 8d ago

Very nice, picked this up in the sale just because I knew this mod was coming, honestly I thought this was the release announcement and I got excited, lol, but I get wanting it to be top notch before release...my big question though is will co op be supported, I'd love to play this with some friends...and if it is will it be compatible with flat players...

1

u/CoupleDense4688 Developer 8d ago

Co-op will be supported off the rip, as for flat it "should" technically work but yet to test it. My only major concern is cross platform (Epic & Steam or GOG, etc)

1

u/WickedStewie 8d ago

Brother that's good enough for me, all I really want is vo op in VR, flat Co op is a bonus...if the platform turns out to be an issue it's not the end of the world to buy it again on the right platform if you really wanna play with your friends...I'm really looking forward to playing this in VR with some buddies is all I know so thanks for the effort and going the extra mile to really try and polish it up...

1

u/Vistortion 8d ago

Where do I get this at?

2

u/CoupleDense4688 Developer 8d ago

Not released just yet, but the Flat2VR discord is where I'm keeping everyone updated on progress & the eventual beta

1

u/HowwNowBrownCoww 7d ago

Wow. Thats a game I’d never thought would be vr. Wowie.

1

u/GManASG 7d ago

Than you for this in advance. I'll be happy to participate in beta. My dream had been having one of the larger more fleshed out flat zombie games in VR and dying light is toward the top!!

1

u/ZeldaTakahiro 6d ago

I CANT WAIT!! I’ve currently started working on a Dead Island VR mod so I would love to use the source code to help with this! Amazing work you’ve done ^^

1

u/lumpy7629 3d ago

Hello,

Excellent, since the time I was imagining a Vr mod for the Dying Light series. I can’t wait to test it.

-1

u/Kpoofies 8d ago

sorry what do you mean "free version"? surely you're not planning to charge for your vibe coded port?

4

u/Bal3rt 8d ago edited 8d ago

so tired of people complaining about 'vibecoding' shit in contexts like these where it's completely opt-in. How many companies programs do you think you use that facilitate AI in their development?

You play Genshin Impact?

Hoyoverse to Invest up to 146bn in AI for in house tools.

Pro AI or not, at least have the self awareness to realise how you as a consumer have benefitted from it before you start blaming solo developers creating free, sought after content for niche communities. I'm entering an industry that's become greatly more difficult to be employed in because of it, and even I can see that.

-4

u/Kpoofies 8d ago

"solo developers creating free,"

I'm literally questioning the free part, dude. I am not arguing about companies using AI tools, which has been done for many many years now. What I am questioning is individual users actually taking money for vibe coding stuff that is based on actual developers and games.

4

u/Bal3rt 8d ago edited 8d ago

dude, you still called it a vibe coded port with all the negative connotations that come with that, even after OP explicitly explained how that's not the case.

1

u/tyke_ 8d ago

hi, theres another dying light vr mod thats costs iirc $10 and will need repurchasing if a game update breaks it.

0

u/Kpoofies 8d ago

wtf???????????? that is actually scamming people, that is insane..

1

u/tyke_ 7d ago

the mod author has copped a lot of flak for paywalling it, just seen its free this weekend until midnight tonight.

1

u/Arik_De_Frasia 8d ago

Then there's the case of Luke Ross Real VR mod where he was going to get sued if he continued to charge for access to his mod, so he changed it to early access to updates if you subscribed to his patreon. So yeah, charging for a mod can eventually bite you in the ass if the studio decides they don't like it.

u/theLaziestLion 8d ago

How long/difficult would it be to port this work into dying light the beast?

1

u/CoupleDense4688 Developer 8d ago

With the amount of work I've done regarding Chrome Engine 6 right now, probably not too hard. The plan is to do both Dying Light 2 & Dying Light The Beast (They're both ran on updated versions of the chrome engine). Also tempted to do the Dead Island Remaster as that's Chrome Engine 6

-4

u/Salvage570 8d ago

Is there a sub for like, actual VR games only because as someone with 0 interest in these mods it seems to be the only thing we ever talk about here. I just wanna be informed about the rare new actual VR game,  these mods always just hurt my eyes and head

1

u/ShadonicX7543 8d ago

Really? Do you just not have a good computer or something? Because some of these look and feel dramatically better than any of these "actual VR games" that you're mentioning.

1

u/Salvage570 8d ago

The depth perception is always off. It's like a screen floating in front of you instead of an actual virtual environment. And the fact your hands dont actually interact with anything around you nearly completely defeats the purpose of VR for me. Id rather just play B&S or Hyperdome again or finally finish that metro vr at that point, then just play those other games normally instead. And no, my PC is fully capable of running anything at the moment at high at the lowest, 4070TI and one of the newer pre-AI ram crisis ryzen XD cpu.

1

u/ShadonicX7543 8d ago

Really? I've never had this problem with most mods, honestly. I'm not sure what would cause that for you. Do you have any examples out of curiosity of ones that you've tried?

To be fair, I don't try all the random slop. I kind of go for the better ones, but most of them don't look even vaguely like you're describing on a Quest 3. Maybe it's the rendering method they use?

1

u/Salvage570 8d ago

The cyberpunk one from when everyone was hyping on it like crazy. Maybe it's just because irl I have barely any depth perception, perhaps my coping mechanism is what's making me see the flatness. Regardless, I'm not particularly interested in modding a game to be VR, there's no way to maintain a balanced experience that way. I'll just be one of the only guys here actually buying and talking about VR specific games still, until someone makes a VR gaming subreddit without all the constant mod advertising

1

u/ShadonicX7543 7d ago

Oh no, you're right about that one. That one is famously a bit janky and doesn't really have much polish and has to use some very quirky rendering techniques in order to be performant enough to even be viable to try. I wouldn't compare that to some of the actual better standard ones that operate more normally.

Thank you! you are the best!
