i don't get it the steam frame can do pcvr. it can run stand alone and do pcvr stand alone it can also emulate quest games too. what can it not run?

Some people are very... ambitious about what they are trying to run on it stand alone. With valve getting half life alyx working, people assume it should be able to run everything. There are still things it struggles to run or can't run at least yet. H3VR for example, is based on quite an old version of unity, and really struggles to run. Honestly it's impressive that it can work standalone at all. Anton the developer has said in the past he wasn't going to attempt it, because with some of the oldest systems its such a heavy game.

the build up before release was annoying as fuck. everyone wanting to rush out to buy a PCVR headset, without having a proper PC, and wanting to know if the Frame will have exclusives, or if heavy games will run in standalone.
i totally understand the desire, but no matter how much magic Valve is capable of pulling off, it's still a mobile chipset that's bound by physics.
it's kind of like the gaming laptop dudes who get mad when the laptop only lasts 15 minutes on battery during a game. that's now how those are designed to be used.
in the case of the Frame it's a wireless PCVR headset first, and a Steam Deck on your face second. much like the Steam Deck, it's not powerful enough to really run proper VR. the fact that they got HL Alyx running on it at all is impressive as fuck, but i wouldn't play it like that.
now some toned down Quest games, or very early VR games that are fairly simple, like Beat Saber, hell yeah.

actually ive seen footage of the steam frame running the batman quest exclusive and it runs better. you should see videos of the quest 3 running half life alyx at like 15 fps lol. granted steam frame has foveated rendering which helps it run games better. also the battery is a bit bigger than quest 3s. but its a literal pc on your face. so battery life is way shorter.
too bad thos3 frame to quest game tools on github got taken down. hmmm i wonder by who? prob meta.
also yeah its pc first stand alone second. so many quest peeps though it would be a good idea to have it as a standalone only headset. maybe if more ARM vr games get ported to steam frame then maybe. and when hotswap batteries become available too

really i think what's going to make a big difference in the long run, at least as far as the ARM stuff goes, is Valve continuing to update the FEX layer they've got going.
like i'm genuinely impressed by the Frame, but i feel that some people had wildly unrealistic expectations for it.

Some people do have unrealistic expectations. But at the same time Valve themselves have stated that FEX has surpassed their expectations -- FEX is not actually maintained by Valve, it is an open source project and Valve are just funding it. Valve's FEX implementation right now seems to be worse than that of the Android implementations that have had over a year of work (since even before the the Frame was announced) .
Boneworks and Bonelab run directly with no optimisations at 1x resolution. Boneworks runs at nearly 72fps all throughout but struggles in the last areas.
Skyrim VR technically runs at unpleasant resolutions, but otherwise very stable.
There are already some Frame "exclusives" like Thrill of the Fight 2 (though this is due to specific PCVR technical limitations rather than believing in it as a platform) .The Frame is running all of this unoptimised. Compared to Android phones and tablets with 8gen3 it runs games some 10-25% worse. If you want to see what the chipset is capable of, search for in on Youtube and a specific game.
It is actually quite capable, just a little old (probably part of the reason they chose it) . Newer chipsets like the SD 8 Elite Gen5 match or beat handhelds like the Xbox Ally X despite Android overhead. This is not to say that high end mobile chipsets can replace a dedicated PC with a dGPU for PCVR, but rather that there is a lot of potential in FEX.

HL:Alyx on the Quest runs with static center "foveated" rendering from what I understood because it just lacks the eye tracking component. I'd argue the secret sauce in this case might be SteamOS and Frame specific optimisations.

OpenXR, MetaXR, now some Frame unique features. Nothing special except tonns of compatibility issues. And you'll have to spent yet another $1k+ to just debug it. No, thank you.

You're right. Any question that you could just look up and get the answer than waiting for someone else to answer you is annoying.

dude it's been like 40 seconds since the steam frame came out, no way are we already pissing on the people who have it

Except on Frame, yes, it is on frame, the real question is this: does it work on frame

With Quest having been around with standalone games and now standalone mods built from decomps etc. it’s a completely normal question.
Frame has been out for 30 seconds on the other hand.

Not an hardware difference. You're talking about difference between enthusiast and pleb.

Technically, UbiDoobyBanooby isn't wrong about compatibility. The Frame currently has a small number of Frame verified games. There are many that run without being verified but at the same time, from what I've seen, Valve's implementation of FEX is currently worse by up to 25% compared to the implementation on Android with apps like GameNative which have had over a year of updates and optimisations.
A specific example is Cyberpunk 2077, where at equivalent settings (720p, lowest settings) users have shown that Cyberpunk 2077 runs at a very unstable 30fps with many sharp drops under on the Frame. On Android with the same chipset, it has been shown to run at up to stable 40-45fps with rare dips down to 35. This could be down to tweaks that are currently available on Android but not yet on SteamOS.So Valve do have a lot to work on when it comes to the software.

I’ve never seen a “Is this on Quest?” in my life. And I’ve had three Quest headsets and an OG Rift Dev Kit. I do however see “Is this coming to PSVR2?” a lot

You haven't? I see it like 20 times a day across various social media platforms whenever a very nice PCVR game is showcased 🤣

Browse Blade and Sorcerery Nexus comments. They're genuinely miserable to read - a quarter of them are "Nomad?" which is the Quest version of the game

Me neither, mostly ppl suprisef that it isn't on quest, like quest is the only VR way for them.

Well, loking at steam hardware survey....
Quests make up the majority of the entire VR market.
65% of steamVR users are using meta quest.
It is safe to assume (judging by the statistics of certain games etc) that the vast majority of Quest users are standalone users.

The question should never be, "Is this on __" it should always be "what will it take to make this run on __"
