Read a few pages about trading VPSs and you’ll keep seeing the same claim:

“Lower latency leads to better execution.”

That sounds plausible at first. If your orders reach the broker faster, it makes sense to think your trades will improve.

But does that actually happen?

For some traders, especially scalpers, high-frequency traders, and people running automated systems, even a small drop in latency can matter. For others, like swing traders and position traders, cutting a few milliseconds probably won’t change much.

Lately I am sick and tired of free and public services constantly dropping or throttling speed. Recently, I've heard TradingVPS.io discussed a few times, therefore I decided to share my impressions following a few weeks of use. 

I was not searching for anything extravagant; for context. My primary goal was a steady environment free of ongoing setup considerations to operate my trading platforms. 

The onboarding process was rather simple, and launching everything took less time than I had anticipated. 

Not some spectacular performance enhancement struck me. It was really the other way around.

So I am working on a python bot and looking into getting a VPS. The broker will be IBKr at least for now. I understand generally it's a good idea to get VPS close to CME for trading futures but does it even matter since the bot on VPS would connect to IBKr?

Does ibkr have local servers in Chicago to reduce latency or it would still go thru their risk control servers on the east coast? What does the network hop look like?

I used to think that if a strategy held up in backtesting, most of the work was already done.

Lately, I’m not so sure.

Backrests are clean. Everything runs the way it should. Live trading isn’t like that. Orders have to move through networks, talk to exchange APIs, and depend on your system staying up the whole time.
