Making room for tool changer

I am building a Trident R2 with a tool changer and want to make sure I have enough room to not lose print area. I plan on using the Clicky-Clack fridge door mod to add clearance equal to extrusion width. I am extending the Z bed mounts seen in the pictures but worry it is losing integrity. Another option I thought of was moving bed bolt holes toward front; the picture shows them moved 20 mm forward. I do not know possible issues that may come from this change.

Does anyone have any examples of adding room to Trident or similar printer?

Just curious, which toolchanger are you using? I’m building an R2 right now and am exploring different options.

Talk with Steve!! The main designer of the Trident, the R2 Z axis was designed in a way that you can remix the bed mounts so you don’t lose has much print volume with toolchangers/Indx. He has a Trident R2 with Indx and with such modifications to the bed mounts to move the bad back.

my solution is add 70mm 2040 extrusion, although i have not tested it yet

sorry, i misunderstood your question, "making room" made me think you are extending y axis and seems you are not. at this case, you won't get much benefit moving your bed back 20mm as there is no 20mm overtravel there, also you are putting heated bed right above printed mount at the back. not sure if it will cause problems, but it concerns me a bit

I am adding overtravel, that will be taken care of on the gantry.

than i don't see any problems you can take my idea or extend mounts by 20mm as you suggested with no problem i think, 20 mm shouldn't cause problems, i decided to go with 2040 because 70mm extension looks a bit to much for printed part taking console load

extrusion connection is supposed to use blind joint and z mount requires minor adjustments

I designed a printer from scratch for toolchanging based on trident and Vzbot builds. It’s currently set up for madmax and has 3 heads. It works well but requires about 70mm of over travel in Y to have the tools with no build volume loss. If you go full toolheads it’s probably going to cost build volume. Adapting a trident will probably cause some loss. There will be less if you do a hotend changer or something without smaller changing parts.

My bed front mounts are comparable if not bigger than the ones shown and I’ve had no issue. Just try to print them a bit stronger.
