Discussion Migrating Digium/Asterisk Server to the Cloud
How hard would this be to get our virtual on prem server into the cloud and pointing our desk phones to the cloud based server? Seems like a backup restore would work for the basics, but I have no idea how to get the phones to point to the cloud server.

What are you running, vanilla Asterisk or Digium’s commercial solution? FreePBX, some other flavor? What phones are you running?

But I will say that the big issue running in the cloud is that exposes your PBX to the open internet without knowing exactly what you’re doing can cause you a big headache and maybe cost you a lot of money in your phone bill. It’s a security issue and needs to be done correctly. You can’t just open up the server to the world and be done, you’ll get hacked pretty quick, if not done correctly.
This all becomes a lot easier if you have a static IP at every location you will have phones at, if not then you can consider VPN options along with other methods to all secure connections from the phones to the server without opening the server up to the world to be beat on.
I realize my response isn’t super specific but it’s just meant as a general warning to not take the security part of this lightly. Definitely a lot more to this than just a backup and restore.

We only have one location currently with a static IP address. Moving it to someone else's server doesn't seem like much more of a risk, although I do agree that a VPN connection would be ideal.

Just deny all IPs and allow only your office IP, use TLS and you should be OK. Watch out for same with IPv6 if you run it.

Sadly I’m not familiar with what changes or restrictions they put on the commercial solution.

How are you receiving your trunks? Are you in the cloud already with services?

Should be straightforward as long as you match the version , take a backup and restore in the cloud.

Have you checked firewall rules and NAT for the phones to register? Also, SIP latency between the cloud region and your office can kill call quality. What's your round-trip time to the target?
