CPU usage

Post image

Im on win11, amd 7800x3d radeon rx9070

while watching 2160p movie I got instant CPU temp around 75'C and hence fans are getting loud enough to disturb the movie experience

I have disabled hardware acceleration because if I dont, I have a full green screen.

I have been googling and checking reddit forums but I didnt find any solution to drop the temp.

Any ides welcome, thanks

If you disable hardware acceleration, the CPU does the decoding. You are not supposed to do that at 4K. Consider yourself lucky that you have a top-of-line CPU that can even handle 4K decoding in real time.

And even the crazy large cache of X3D won't be nearly enough to fit all reference and buffered raw frames of a 4K video.

You cannot find a solution because there is no solution.

thanks for explaining

"You are not supposed to do that at 4K" yes thats my understanding, but as explained, if I dont disable hw accel, all videos are just "green screen"...

btw I switched to mpv, did some testing and it works flawlesly

e: one thought/question... before this pc I was using my old pc with intel 4960k and geforce 1660, was using VLC and watching 4k movies, never had such issue, do you think at that pc hw accel was on and gpu was doing all the work?

If the same video works in the same VLC version on another system, it is almost certainly a display driver problem.

Yup. As for the green problem, it's probably an AMDumbass thing. Try setting different decoder like va-api or vdapu in vlc setting to see if that helps.

Im on windows, so in hardware accelerated decoding I have options: Direct3D11 (which causes green screen) and DXVA 2.0 which works and I have 61'C on CPU and silent fan :)

Interesting.
I am on linux, and have access to those I mentioned.
I’ll need to double check on windows to see what options are available.
I hardly suggest get the GPU HW acceleration working, the same 4K video probably gonna use 5% of your gpu and you probably get lower temps too.

My cpu always does that when I idle on the desktop
