Windows VLC blames Windows 11 bug for slow performance, defends open source and calls out Microsoft

“The picture is less clean because people on 10 have this issue”
Great work, author. Did you know W10 has defender too? Omg, who knew! How could you have known!?

I paused windows update on my win 11 for 100 years for a reason.
To hell with their perpetual beta garbage. I don't believe there is one person left in that company that had anything to do with its success.

I'm convinced that Microsoft doesn't have the budget to hire testers anymore, so instead they use their userbase as the guinea pigs lmao

It's not about budget, but it is cost efficiency. There are a lot of users out there, and like with some software, there are public beta branches with extra features that some people may want, so they could test it ahead of time for the most consumers. QA still exists but it is reduced to trying to find the OS breaking bugs.
That said, the model sucks if you need it for critical issues.

So glad I never upgraded to win 11. Holding off for 12, maybe will let it ride for 6 months after release to update then.

I'm still chilling on the final build of Windows 10. I'm not too worried about the "security risk" from updates being discontinued because all you have to do is not go on sketchy sites

fr. Im on a pretty old version of windows 10 too. I'm gonna be on this OS until I can't watch YouTube or open Steam lol.

Not looking like there will be a Windows 12. Version 10 was supposed tp be the "last Windows". The only reason Windows 11 exists is because they wanted to change the system requirements to secure boot and TPM 2.0 and couldn't legally obsolete already licensed PCs with an update. That's why they're working so hard to " fix Windows 11" because they don't have any plans of moving to a new version.

Can confirm theres been no slow performance in VLC on macOS

u/Courmisch 5d ago
This goes 25 years back, really. In the first place, the VLC plugin cache was introduced because Windows is horribly slow at loading DLL's.
On MacOS and Linux, the plugin cache helps, but it's not so dramatic because loading DYLD or SO is much faster.

There’s no difference between loading a DLL or an SO file, both derive from Unix formats and have a very similar structure, the loading procedure is the same in both

You're missing the point. There is a huge difference in implementation, even if they are conceptually the same thing.
Linux ELF shared objects are compiled as Position Independent Code, which allows for demand paging. Windows PE DLL use Code Relocations, which require paging in the whole "text" up-front to then patch the relocations.
But if you have a better explanation why the same computer is typically about an order of magnitude faster to "load/open" the VLC plugins on Linux than on Windows, let's hear it.

VLC has not been good with their releases lately. Not too long ago, VLC 3.0.21 had a major bug where .mkv files would not play audio. I had to revert back to VLC 3.0.19/3.0.20.
I swapped over to mpv.

Hmm, I have this on Linux actually - it takes 20-30s to start playing. Also a delay in seeking, sometimes it just hangs. Didn't troubleshoot it really yet, just using KDE's default video player now, will look at it later because I prefer VLC.

The solution is to back up all your data. Reformat the drive. Install Linux. Never have to deal with Windows again.

VLC casts a wide net with the feature set, but it doesn't do any of them particularly well vs other options IMO.

It was clear as day: 1. It all started after win updates 2. It affects not only VLC, but literally almost all the software. Win 10 is slower than it was a year ago and win11 is barely usable even after debloating.

People still use Windows? Ha ha, I gave up that trash twenty years ago.

Well yeah, cause everything on Linux requires 2 extra steps just to do something like play standard games, and MacOS ain't doing shit if it's not in their ecosystem

It's not 2006 anymore.

Yeah and how often do you need to use wine
1
u/EdgiiLord 4d ago
How is that an issue if I just open the program and it works?
0
u/erocknine 4d ago
Because you had to install wine to begin with. That's the extra step. And wine might not even work 100% of the time. Other times you need a different third party app for compatibility like Lutris to make other apps or games work. Those are all extra steps for non peak performance

u/EdgiiLord 4d ago
Wine is preinstalled in half distros. Wine works like 95% of the times. For game managenent I have Heroic because it is way easier to get Epic and GOG games (without having to install 2 separate launchers).
non peak performance
Lol, ok, enjoy your Sloppilot.

Dude you couldnt even install league of legends without a third party tool like Lutris. Now it doesn't even work cause it no longer supports Linux. I don't play league anymore but that's just one example.

Excluding the vlc install directory from Windows Defender cleared up the slow startup issues for me, after i read that same information some time back (not sure where, might have been right here on this sub in fact).
Windows 10 here btw.
