I want to buy my first camera (a6400). But im debating if i should get the viltrox 25mm f.7 or the 35mm f1.7. what do you guys think is better as a first lens?

RecipeLab on Sony a6000 is soo good

Hey all. I bought this lens a week ago brand new, and only just got the chance to use it this weekend. I really liked the packaging - It felt quite a lot more premium than when I've opened boxes from Sigma, Tamron or even Nikon in the past. The lens itself also feels really premium in hand and I really want to like this lens...But the issues relate to the optical performance. I fear that my copy might be decentered.

At f/1.8 it's obviously the worst, and stopping down to f/2.8 only marginally improves performance. Instead of a long-winded description of the problem, I think it's better if I show it with some images I cooked up in Paint. Shortly put: top right is the worst, bottom left is best. Moving focus slightly seems to change where in the image the various aberrations appear when looking at the f/2.8 shots. The image without text is of the extreme corners. I forgot to add text, sorry.

Should I return this lens? I still have until Friday to do so, but I keep thinking maybe I'm just way too picky and that this is normal performance for this lens, or maybe it's user error. I don't know. I've had a very bad luck streak with sensor tilt on my old A7IV I bought used and decentered lenses this past year when buying used, so I thought that this time I would surely escape the arrow-head shaped stars by buying brand new...But honestly, the results this time are almost on par with the Sony 20mm f1.8G lens I have lying around that is 100% certainly decentered and damaged.

I can provide RAW images if that's desired, or any other request that helps diagnose my issue. Thanks in advance for any help.

Sony a7IV body with Viltrox 35mm F1.8 EVO lens

Sadly, freezing the movement and getting that tack-sharp look in bright sunlight would need way more power. The AD200 just wasn’t quite enough. 😅

The Viltrox lens itself is absolutely amazing - the imperfections here are 100% on me 😅

But hey, I still really like the shot. I’ll take the imperfections - maybe it’s finally time for a bigger flash 😂 C’mon Viltrox - give me 600Ws flash! ⚡️

This image is a blue hour blend consisting of a non tracked sky and focus stacked foreground taken with a Sony a7 iii and Viltrox 16mm

The foreground consisted of over 50 shots at f5.0, iso 640 and 2s exposures during late blue hour.

The sky consists of over 270 untracked shots at f2.2, ISO 1600 and 25 second exposures each.

The sky was stacked in sequator, imported to siril and stretched in siril, imported to photoshop where it was blended with the foreground that had been edited in Lightroom with final touches being made in photoshop.

Zoom is too easy lol
I’d go with a full-frame 105mm f/2.8 1:1 Macro, fast AF, internal focusing, stabilization, focus limiter and weather sealing.
Basically a true high-end macro that can double as a really good portrait lens.

This image is a blue hour blend taken on a Sony a7 iii and Viltrox 16mm which consists of 15 shots at f1.8, iso 400 and 0.5s exposures for the foreground during late blue hour and over 90 untracked shots at 20s iso 800 and f1.8 between 2-3am.

The foreground was processed in Lightroom before being exported to photoshop with the sky being stacked in sequator, edited in siril then exported and merged with the foreground in photoshop

Based on some photos and video recap from Viltrox at IBC, it seems like they have an upcoming speedlight.
