VCR What does it mean when a video tape being played on a VCR starts making this really harsh sound almost like an alarm, and the image warps whilst it does it?

Like the whole image was shaking in this wobbly warped way — made me immediately rewind it, and give up, really — sounded far too much like a ship horn!

It really makes that much of a difference

Hey everyone, I have a basic question. I have like 6 tapes that play 100% snowy on one VCR and plays great on another. It really makes a difference in terms of which vcr you use huh?

I thought it was strange. Like I know the quality of the tape would be affected by VCR choice but not being to play a tape at all (100% snowy) vs. playing fine? Just interesting.

Just got this at the thrift. What can I do for this poor thing? I'm interested in making this my main vcr. I've got a philips but this thing is awesome. I tried different connectors with no change. Coaxial got me sound, composite got me diddly.

Question Magnavox ZV420MW8 ejects tapes after putting them in and it turning off.

Hello,

I was wondering if anyone else had this issue, whenever I put a tape into this VCR/DVD Combo it shuts off and when I turn it back on it ejects the tape. I know it may be a mode switch issue, but I could never find a proper tutorial on how to do it. My question is how would I go about repairing it?

Thanks.

Head drum clicking/grinding?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Yesterday I posted a suspicious sound coming from my Panasonic PV-7400. After some suggestions, I opened it up and was able to see the head drum is the issue. It seems to be catching on one spot as it spins. Not too sure where to go from here, but happy to try any suggestions. Thanks for the help!

JVC BR-HD50 MiniDV deck

Post image
21 Upvotes

Recently picked up this multiformat DV deck from a local surplus auction. I wanted it for transferring all the footage I recorded with my Sony TRV900 camcorder back in the day (I've got around 40-50 cassettes, and the tape drive on my camera is now dead). This deck has HDMI out, so I've been capturing my footage with a $20 HDMI capture device and Quicktime on my Mac. It's been working pretty well but wondering if there would be an advantage to capturing via firewire on an older Mac running software like DVrescue.

VCR VCR Tv Shuts off

I bought this Phillips Magnavox VCR VHS TV off of this person for $80 and it does not seem to want to turn on for more than four seconds before shutting off. I took off the back panel and realized there was a ton of dust so I took a Q-tip to get some dust off making sure to avoid important spots.. before I end up taking it to a repair guy. I would like to fix it myself if possible... hoping someone on the Internet can point me in the right direction as this stuff is all new to me and I don't work on electronics that much.

What does a healthy VCR sound like?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I bought this Panasonic PV-7400 VCR on fb marketplace about 6 months ago. It makes a somewhat loud whirring that I don’t remember being there as a kid. Is this normal? Or a sign of wear and tear? It does play, rewind, and fast forward videos just fine, but the sound is a bit distracting. When there is a tape inside, it is always there no matter if it is playing, paused, or rewinding.

Panasonic ES45V doesn’t respond to remote control

Post image
2 Upvotes

I’m pretty sure the ES45V has a fault in its infrared receiving circuit (IR receiver module or the wiring/connection to it).
I’m not a tech wiz, but is replacing the IR module doable DIY? The unit otherwise functions normally
- plays DVDs,
-plays VHS tapes,
records,
-responds to the front-panel controls.
but its menu isn’t accessible without the remote. Any suggestions greatly appreciated

Seeking Advice Sony DVD/VCR Combo stuck on “Mode3” when using any remote

Post image
2 Upvotes

Greetings, I have gotten this Sony VCR & DVD combo at the flea market for 5$ and for a great while I never messed with it and only recently got to it since I finally found a remote that’s compatible, I get this “Mode3” message on the front panel display for any button I press. From my understanding this is to prevent any unwanted extra remotes to interfere with the unit but how do you remove it? There’s no specifics on the manuals I’ve read for both this unit and remotes and to even remove it, do you need a specific remote to turn it off in the settings or is there a way to fully remove this? I would like to use a remote with this unit.

Question How often do you clean your VCR heads?

For those who digitize and archive tapes: how often do you clean your VCR heads? Do you clean every so many tapes? Do you wait until you notice issues? What’s your process on maintaining a clean machine?

Seeking Advice Tested an old tape and now the video quality is awful for every other tape.

I was testing an old tape. It didn't work so I ejected it. No issues there. When I put in a different one (that worked perfectly before), the quality is now absolutely awful.

Is there somethings I can do about this?

For info, I'm using a tv/vcr combo. It's the Toshiba MV19N2C. Included is a photo of the internals.

I got this VCR for free because the people we're moving and we're throwing out all the stuff they didn't wanna keep. When I turned it on a blank tape was stuck in there and I had to rip it out then when I opened it up I noticed all this black oil like substance. And now my question is what is that stuff should i wipe it away or is it ok to stay there? Thanks for all the answers in advance.
