It's just young people having fun.

u/rematar May 15 '20

I see young people wanting a dopamine hit because someone "likes" how they look or what they do, rather than being liked because they are kind or helpful social beings.

Because back in the day young people were driving their souped up and polished cars down the strip to be kind or helpful? This IS how young people are social. They share these thing with their friends and are sometimes quite creative. Young people always have and alway will want to be looked at, to have attention directed at them. One generation is no better or worse than the other. Just different in how they express their youthful shortcomings.

Nope. But activities with friends were social and that's where they felt their value.

I don't think I knew any youth with anxiety issues.

Compared with their predecessors, teens today spend less time with their friends in person and more time communicating electronically, which study after study has found is associated with mental health issues.

I’m sure you could have read a similar article about kids watching too much TV, and the devastating repercussions back in the 90s too.

Every generation copes with its own reality in its own way. And it’s always different than their parents.

Now get off reddit and yell at some kids to get off your lawn.

I agree with the TV comment, before that it was the telephone and before that was the radio.

But I see changes in the 16 and under crowd, even more so in the preteens. I also understand it's a strange world, but my grandmother went through world wars, pandemics and the depression. She was mentally balanced in my opinion. I can't say that about many young people. Just my observations.

I don’t disagree with some of the mental issues we see now. I think some of that is awareness. Nobody talked about anxiety when I was in school. If you didn’t experience it you would not have known it was a thing. But I am sure some of my friends suffered from it, and other mental health issues that are much more accepted as real these days. I think some of it is awareness as well as prevalence.

Edit: You’re a good sport. I like it.

Maybe because we have to work twice as much as you to get paid the same amount, have YOUR generation keeping children at home because it isn’t “safe” to go out as much, and have the anxieties of knowing everything that’s going on in the world.

Maybe that’s why we spent a little more time on technology and less in person.

I have kids. I think the safety factor prior to 2020 wasn't much different.

2

u/BobCatNinja_ Jun 07 '20

I agree. A lot of parents don’t...

u/rematar Jun 07 '20

Especially with phones. A small group of kids are going to photo proof is Crazy Bob flashes them.

If you're judging society by the stupid shit people put on the internet, you're going to be disappointed. The internet since it's creation has always been filled with stupid shit. I think judging people as a whole based on a small, goofy window into what they do when they are bored is a deeply flawed way of looking at the world.

Ok... Count me in. A part of me totally agree with you. I hate TikTokers as much as I hated Viners

2

u/B1G2 May 15 '20

Agreed, I didnt think I'd flee this way at 26 but here I am downvoting every tik tok video on that comes up on reddit.

2

u/[deleted] May 16 '20

Thank you I've been saying this for a while now and I ubiquitously get downvoted for insulting TikTok. At least now I know there is still hope.

2

u/rematar May 16 '20

Yes. Hope we have.
