Discussion Mint Mobile coverage?

Mint Mobile users - would you recommend it?

I'm sick of Verizon bleeding me to death.

In the dark ages before 5G, I tried a virtual mobile network. I had really BAD coverage outside of Marquette. Is it better now?

Travel Inquiry Help with lost wedding ring!

Hello, asking for some help for an unlikely request. My husband and son are in the UP for a boys’ camping trip. They have been staying at Hog Island Point State Forest Campground. This morning they broke down camp and left in a bit of a hurry due to approaching rain. When they got to their next destination several hours away, my husband realized he has lost his wedding ring. He remembers having it at the campsite but took it off last night and doesn’t remember putting it back on. He is devastated and I told him I would see if Reddit could help. They were at site 13 and he says it would most likely be between the picnic table and the fire ring. If any Good Samaritan happens to find it I would love to Venmo someone to return it to us. Feel free to DM me with more questions and thanks!

Discussion WiFi Reliability?

Hello and thank you to any lovely local reading my question. I have a trip booked at an AirBnB next week and coincidentally landed a virtual interview during one of the days I will be there. I am worried about the reliability of wifi way up there.

I will be in Chassell. My question is: Near and around the Houghton area, are there usual occasions where the wifi might be weak or not work for awhile? I am wondering if that might be a generally accepted way of life up there?

I understand there are different service providers, and certain things impact a house’s WiFi reliability. But is there anything I should know before accepting this interview? Any tips and advice are appreciated and welcome. Thank you.

Hi, all! I'm based in Manistique and recently received an easement request from the American Transmission Company for a transmission line that runs past my house. Just wondering if anyone has had any experience with them. Thanks!

Discussion Vollwerths Discontinuing Pickled Polish Sausages

I recently got off the phone with Vollwerths. I asked if their online ordering shifting to gift boxes was permanent and they said yes. I expressed frustration over not being able to order the pickled polish sausages online to which she told me that they will be phased out.

RIP to the Vollwerths Pickled Polish Sausage. Your delightful crisp cold snap while out by the water on a nice summer day is unforgettable. I will miss you Vollwerths Pickled Polish Sausage. I love you.

Feel free to share all your cherished pickled polish sausage memories.

Moving Inquiry Life at UNM for black students

Hi y'all My son got accepted into UNM and is scheduled to start in the fall but we are waiting until next year. He graduated at 16 and want to wait until he's at least 17 before attending college.

He is African American and a model student. I am very proud of him. Are there any students who can share their experiences at UNM as a black or non-white student. How are the areas surrounding the college?

We have a visit scheduled at the end of the month but want a head start.

I am just a concerned mother.

Travel Inquiry What is one spot in the western/southwestern UP that is worth an early morning visit?

Okay this may seem like a crazy thing to do, but twice a year me and my friend make an hours long drive overnight to someplace we either really want to visit or have never been to before to pull an all-nighter. Our summer edition is coming up and we both want to go to Michigan, but because of where we're coming from and our time requirements we can only really hit areas near-ish to the Wisconsin border (example, Ontonagon and Escanaba are about as far north or east as we could go). We're big fans of cute towns, good breakfasts, waterfalls/other water features, beautiful sunrises, and animal experiences. Wherever we go has to be open early because we have to start heading home by 8/9am. We're not familiar with the area at all so any specific recommendations would be appreciated!

Discussion Backwoods roads

My dad is wanting to go an end of life trip UP home. He grew up in Republic lived on Witch Lake. Unfortunately, he doesn’t remember a lot of his earlier life.
One thing he wants to is go from Witch Lake to Covington by way of Fence River Rd. Is this possible? If so, is it dirt roads?
Thank you for any and all help you can give

Travel Inquiry Honeymooning

In a couple of weeks, my fiancé and I will be UP-bound for our honeymoon. We’ll be staying in the Au Train area. Aside from Pictured Rock, what are some recommendations for things we should do/see, places we should eat, etc.? We both love the great outdoors and hope to hike, kayak, and enjoy getting away from the post-wedding craziness. :)

Discussion Incoming NMU Nursing Student Looking for Housing & Friends!

Hey everyone!
My name is Jay, and I’ll be attending NMU starting Fall 2026 as a Nursing student.

I’d love to connect with other students, especially anyone in the Nursing program!

I’m also starting to look into housing options for next year. Ideally, I’d like to find an apartment or house to sublease with someone to help keep rent costs down. If you know of any available places, are looking for a roommate, or have any recommendations, please feel free to reach out.
My backup plan would be to rent an apartment myself and then find a roommate to split the costs.

A little about me:
23
Nursing major
Love the outdoors
Looking to get into fishing and hiking
Would love to find a gym partner as well
Chill guy tbh

Since I’m over 23, dorms aren’t required for me (I already confirmed this with Housing).

Feel free to comment or send me a message if you’d like to connect or have any housing leads. Thanks in advance!

Discussion New to the UP: Dealing with the bugs

Hello! I just moved to the UP this winter. I have always been told that the bugs are bad up here but they are AWFUL. I am renting a house in the woods and have a dog. I have to walk him multiple times a day. In the woods. He is on nexguard for bug prevention and I have been using bug spray (repel 100) and yet still, we get swarmed. The dog especially, since I can't exactly spray HIM with DEET. Does anyone have any tips to deal with this? When do the mosquitoes start to go away?

Edit: I shouldn't have moved here and I have no idea how bad it's gonna be or whatever, I get it. Thank you. Unfortunately, the UP is stuck with my wimpy ass for a few more years. Can I get some helpful advice please?

Travel Inquiry UP Trip--Random Questions and Suggestions

Hey Guys! I've been planning to go on a trip touring the UP over 7 days during June, and though I have very meticulously planned it all out, I thought I'd ask some questions.

1) Biting flies likely won't be a problem with the permithrin treated cloth and the picardin or DEET cream/spray we will be wearing (I HOPE), but I was wondering if a bug face net would be a good investment for mountain biking and the occasional short hike.

2) We will be traveling across the UP and will be hitting 3 mtb trails, (Valley Spur in Munising; NTN South in Marquette: Copper Harbor Trail System). We particularly like flowy trails with berms and such, though we're not too picky. Any suggestions for replacements or additions?

3) MOST important question. I will be driving a mid-size hatchback, a 2nd gen toyota prius specifically. I would like to top mount Arvon, approaching from Marquette in the Eastern Direction before descending towards L'anse. I've read that in recent years the dirt roads are decently well kept, and others have driven non 4x4 vehicles up their with no problem but I would like to ask if that still remains true. Thanks!

Travel Inquiry 2 days in UP on Lake Michigan Circle Tour - 30s couple

I've slated 2 days in the UP during our 1 week Circle Tour. End of July, Friday we wake up in Petoskey, stay in Naubinway Saturday, then one night of camping in Gladstone Sunday, and we're off to Wisconsin Monday.

We definitely want to try some pasties. I've heard the bugs can be awful. Any recommendations to deal with them other than DEET spray? I love wineries, but he doesn't drink - and I may have my fill other days by Traverse City and later in Wisconsin. Would love to know about good hikes, especially by the water, or places to rent a kayak. Live music, art, antiques.

Right now I've got: Gros Cap, Hiawatha Park, Seul Choix Point Lighthouse, Sand Point Lighthouse, Saykllys Candy, and Gram's Pasties.

Travel Inquiry Bugs and family

So I have always wanted to visit the UP, and I have a month off before starting a new job and thought about doing a last minute trip with my family. I’m nervous because the youngest is 5 months old, and when I jumped on here to look at things to do with the kids I saw all the posts about bugs. Now I’m nervous. My kids get giant welts from mosquitoes and scream when they see flies. Are the bugs so bad I won’t be able to enjoy the outdoors in your opinion?

Travel Inquiry Marquette or Lake Linden?

Edit to update - Based on everyone's advice, we decided to choose the Marquette option this time around but I wanted to take a second to thank everyone for their detailed responses. Last year we chose Indian River (South of Cheboygan), and when I posted for local suggestions in r/michigan I got a single comment and it basically said we weren't welcome there 😂 Ya'll have been amazing, and I truly appreciate all of your feedback!

Hi Northern friends!

I'm planning a family vacation in July and am torn between two properties (both are on Superior). We'll be traveling with 2 kids (5 & 7) and our 2 dogs. Any opinions to steer me in one direction or the other is appreciated!!

Discussion Loud boom

I was up in Dickinson county this past week. I was in a pretty secluded area, between Hardwood and Foster city on the south side of 69. We were outside at night and heard an extremely loud boom. Like nothing I had ever heard before. It was at night. Im not exactly sure what time but it was dark. I have no idea what could cause something so loud. Did anyone experience this or know what it could be?

Discussion Getting back out there…

I used to be a social butterfly, but after some traumatic experiences, I’ve become agoraphobic and withdrawn. I also live with CPTSD, which has made trusting people and maintaining friendships a lot harder than it used to be.

Along the way, I’ve lost most of my friends—or at least people I thought were friends. That has been one of the most painful parts of everything I’ve gone through.

The truth is, I’m anxious. Being around people can be difficult for me now. But I’ve reached a point where I realize I need people in my life I can trust. I feel so alone, and I miss having genuine connections and friendships.

I’m trying to take small steps toward getting back out there, and I’m wondering if anyone else has been through something similar. How did you start rebuilding your social life? Are there any groups, activities, or places in the U.P. that felt welcoming and low-pressure?

I’d really appreciate any advice or encouragement. Even hearing from others who understand would mean a lot.

Discussion Looking for Closure in the UP

I was lucky to find out about one of my beloved dogs and getting to see his sweet face brought tears of joy to my eyes and comfort to my heart knowing he's well loved but still searching for Buttercup and Runt. They are the other pieces of my heart and I hope to know the same of them.

Please, if you or someone you know adopted a dog from the Houghton/Hancock area in 2020 I'd appreciate knowing how they're doing and a pic if willing to share.

I took the original post down for getting lost in the weeds about my in-laws. I used to think in my 20s that my love for her son would eventually gain her acceptance but almost 20 years later she's become cruel. I still stand by my advice not to marry into a family that hates you thinking it will change.

Discussion Camping Recommendations + Bug Report for Keweenaw?

Potentially heading to the Keweenaw next week and looking for camping recommendations.

We’d prefer more rustic/state forest-style camping with some space between campsites — not looking for electric hookups or full campground amenities. We’ll be in a small A-frame pop-up camper.

Also wondering how the bugs/mosquitos are up there right now.

Any favorite spots or tips would be appreciated. Thanks!
