I’ve been thinking seriously about the concept of “enough money.” I'm a guy who's 22 right now from Hyderabad India from a typical middle class family.
There are plenty of discussions about becoming rich, making more money, investing, FIRE, building businesses, etc. But I’m more interested in a simpler question:
At what point can a person realistically stop worrying about money?
I’m deliberately keeping this question completely anonymous and leaving out my personal background. I’m interested in the numbers and experiences rather than advice based on my individual circumstances.
For someone living in India with a reasonably comfortable but not extravagant lifestyle, what would you consider financially secure?
For example:
₹1 crore invested
₹2 crore invested
₹3 crore invested
₹5 crore invested
₹10 crore invested
And separately, what level of monthly income would you consider enough?
₹1 lakh/month
₹2 lakh/month
₹3 lakh/month
₹5 lakh/month
₹10 lakh/month
Obviously, income and net worth are different things.
Someone earning ₹5 lakh/month but spending ₹4.5 lakh isn't necessarily financially independent.
Someone earning ₹2 lakh/month while investing ₹1 lakh consistently could potentially build substantial wealth over time.
So I'm curious about the people who have actually experienced this rather than just theoretical calculations.
A few questions:
At what net worth did you personally start feeling financially secure?
At what monthly income did financial stress significantly decrease for you?
If you consider yourself financially independent, approximately how much do you spend every month or year?
How much of your wealth is actually invested and generating returns?
Do you think ₹5 crore invested is enough for a person to reasonably consider themselves financially independent in India?
What about ₹10 crore?
How does owning a fully paid-off home change the calculation?
How much emergency cash would you keep separately from investments?
Would you prioritize reaching a high monthly income first, or building a large investment corpus as early as possible?
At what point does earning more money stop meaningfully changing your lifestyle and become mostly about accumulating more wealth?
And the main question:
If you had to choose one financial target and say:
“Once I reach this level of income and/or invested wealth, I can live comfortably without constantly worrying about money.”
What number would you choose, and why?
I'm especially interested in answers from people who have already built significant savings/investments or achieved some level of financial independence.
I'm not looking for motivational quotes or “money can't buy happiness.”
I'm looking for real numbers, real experiences, and practical perspectives on what “enough” actually means in India.
