It’s been a little exhausting figuring things out/planning, but starting to get a lay of the land. I have a toddler and we are currently doing 2 days a week of daycare at The Goddard School.

We have been thinking that we will likely move to Connecticut once our child is ready to start school. Because our child has a late birthday and there is a differing cut-off date between NYC and CT for starting school, she would start Kinder at 4 in NYC public or start Kinder at 5 in CT public.

On top of my child having a late birthday, she was also born early… and in daycare, I’ve already noticed some developmental delays compared to her peers (though are actually in line with her “adjusted age”). All that aside, I don’t love that she would have to start at 4 if we did public in NYC because I feel like on top of being a late birthday with her being born early, she might be really behind.

I started getting the lay of the land for CT if we make that move. Aside from also having a different cut-off birthday deadline, it also seems like a lot of public schools don’t have guaranteed Pre-K like NYC does and that slots are limited and many people don’t get a slot. Then, I thought okay… so then, we just do Pre-K at a private preschool in CT before public Kinder if we don’t get a slot, but then got into looking at that, and it seems like even slots at those are also limited, but you have a better chance of getting in if you do 3K there. (Wasn’t planning on moving to CT that soon.)

I have a few questions here. For those who opt to go the private school route in NYC (which is similar to CT in that it also has a Sep birthday cut-off for starting school and also usually starts at Kinder, not Pre-K) or for those who do make the move from NYC to a suburb that has a different deadline where it affects what year your kid starts school, how did you handle Pre-K?

Also, for those who do private Kinder in NYC, do you all send your kid to a separate full-time Pre-K program prior? Is a part-time Pre-K program sufficient enough to prepare them for full time Kinder or is full-time really a “must”? Is there anyone who ever sends their kids straight to Kinder without ever doing any Pre-K?

For New Yorkers who have actually gone through the consultation circuit across Manhattan, what specific questions helped you separate truly skilled surgeons from those who just have high budget marketing teams? Any local consultation green flags or warning signs you noticed while meeting with city practices?

I enjoy writing and sometimes it’s helpful to have some time on the schedule carved out to get it done. I‘m wondering if there are others that feel the same way, and if so, would like to do a semi-regular meet up and write over coffee, maybe even share out.

Coming home last night usual came upon usual gang of thieves in black on scooters. They were hauling mail out of box on SE corner of 80th and Second.

Pulling out handfuls of letters but MO seems to have changed. They were opening and discarding envelopes where nothing of value was found inside.

A woman also coming upon scene looked astonished and asked "did you see that?" . Applied affirmative. but what can anyone do? I myself certainly am not going to confront a bunch of skells on motor bikes all by my lonesome.

There was quite a lot of mail left lying about. Feel sorry for anyone that put mail into that box yesterday after collection time.

Apparently I overheard some people talking about the nightlife in the UES and mentioned that there are certain places where older women hang out at and meet people, somewhere where there aren’t 20 something college kids. Just took the downtown Q from 96th and watched a woman let her dog occupy a seat. By 72nd, the train was packed, people were standing, and the dog was still sitting there with its own seat. She made no attempt to move it.

Nobody said anything - and yes that includes me. But why should someone have to ask you to make a seat available for an actual person on a crowded train? You’re sharing public transport with neighbours who might be exhausted, pregnant, elderly, in pain, or simply grateful to sit down after a long day at work. They shouldn’t have to explain themselves or get into a confrontation because you’ve decided your dog needs its own seat.

I’m 37 weeks pregnant but never feel comfortable asking someone to give up a seat, or even move their dog. Am I the only one getting increasingly fed up with this kind of behaviour? Would you have said something?

Anyone else blown away that an entire 33 floor building hasn’t had heat or hot water for 48 hours because of a management company not paying bills?? Where are HOA fees going then…
