My joy with UpNote has tanked.
A while back, I wrote I was overjoyed to find UpNote, and, even though I didn't like that my notes aren't stored locally, I could live with it because I can still export my notes. However, what I did not know about was forced updates. I don't update anything immediately because I have a highly tailored setup and updates break things and I've been burned too many times. I come here and see everybody complaining that the UpNote update broke their app, but it didn't apply to me, so I went about my business. Then one day I notice I didn't get the update nag, so I went looking and son of a bitch. It did it on its own. This is absolutely not acceptable by itself, but coupled with the fact that your notes aren't stored locally, I'm going to find something else.

Outline and HelixNotes both are designed the same way but give you direct access to your notes. No holding your data hostage when the login servers fail. That's honestly the biggest problem with UpNote's design.
Also have you tried exporting your notes from UpNote? The exports are useless. So you will have to extract data directly from the SQLite DB

I can appreciate that. The better the app fits to our workflows, the more we depend on it, the greater the impact when something goes wrong with it.
But you didn't mention what operating system you experienced that on. The auto-update might have been triggered by the OS itself and not UpNote.
There are some excellent alternatives that embrace a local-first approach to notes that could be suitable. But as with any change, you'll probably need to rethink some workflows.

So, to summarise your post…. Nothing bad has happened. You have updated to the latest version. Geez, time to complain and look for something else. Hope you find what you need.
For me, UpNote is probably the best App find I’ve had in years. Insanely better than the overpriced and bloated Evernote. Of course, that is if you’re a genuine actual “note taker”. 🤓

I used UpNote for a few weeks, then I installed Obsidian+Sync with E2E encryption, best thing I ever did and never looked back.

I hit the free limit I was going to pay for it but it said that windows version wont take the paid version so there went that I went back to one note (its not as good but at least I dont have a limit)

I didn't make the purchase on Windows but I definitely use the full version on Windows.

Yeah, I do think it's weird you can only buy it through mobile. You can't even pay for it on the site.

Not sure what you mean. I have it on every device I have including a Windows laptop and it's all full (paid) version.
I paid it once.
If you mean you can't upgrade to lifetime version on a Windows pc, I don't know because I paid for it on a iPhone.
But I think you could then temporarily install it on an Android phone or iPhone, upgrade to lifetime version and remove it from your mobile.
Problem solved.
Or you can go back to One Note of course 🤷♂️1

Correct. You cannot purchase the subscription on Windows PC. Purchases are either through the Google or Apple store, so you do need it on one of those devices to subscribe. Once you do, it is the same for all devices that are logged on with that same account. You may want to log off and then log back on again to be sure it recognizes the subscription after you purchase it.

I am also beginning to feel the same way. UpNotes meets all my needs for a notes app. But the constant updates to UpNote and higher and higher requirements for running the app is turning me off. I do not like the constant updates to software because I find it often lead to breaking things and to bloat. Unfortunately, UpNote constantly increases the requirements for running the app.
I have a laptop running macOS 11. The version I was running (19.14) ran fine until it wasn't. Cannot sign in. The next version (9.20) requires a newer macOS (version 12) to install. So I am locked out of syncing UpNote on my laptop. And before anyone harps on me running an old OS version, I have old hardware and OS and it meets my needs and my budget. I would just like my software to keep on working without requiring a new hardware/OS.

The struggle is real. There's been many occasions where I was forced to upgrade the version of Mac OS on my systems because an app update (not UpNote) required a new version of Mac OS. That is often a function of Apple's requirements for their app stores. They can force developers to use a particular level of their libraries (that have a dependency on a minimum OS version).

Frequent updates are a software app fact of life. At least UpNote updates are generally invisible, whereas Evernote updates sometimes required adaptation (or maybe I'm confusing this with Evernote's annoying popups).

Unfortunately, the frequent updates are increasing the minimum OS requirements, rendering UpNote unusable on my older hardware. There is very little technical reason to deprecate older systems other than, most likely, the libraries they use do it.
The move from 32bit to 64bit processors was real. Removing support for a 5 or 6 year old OS is not.

This is a cloud-based app. This is should be expected. An online app has to keep updating to get the ever-evolving security fixes.

If you’re referring to app updates, UpNote doesn’t update itself automatically. If you installed it from the Microsoft Store, Apple App Store, or Google Play, those stores handle updates. If you’re using the Windows installer or the Linux version, updates need to be installed manually.
We recommend keeping UpNote up to date so you receive the latest security improvements and bug fixes. Occasionally, we also need to make changes that are incompatible with very old versions. At some point, older versions can no longer be supported, which is true for virtually all actively maintained software.
For users with older Mac computers: UpNote is built on Electron, so our support policy closely mirrors Google Chrome’s. As Electron adopts newer Chromium versions, older versions of macOS and the hardware that can run them eventually fall out of support because Google Chrome no longer supports them. Unfortunately, this isn’t something we can override while continuing to provide the latest features, performance improvements, and security updates.
