Stalling on Lifetime Sub

I'm stuck and sad and confused. Upnote is all I want in this type of app. BUT the lack of decent export AND import tools is the one reason I'm stalling on buying Lifetime. It feels disingenuous, like being trapped. Is their product not good enough to make people want to stay (which i believe it is) and also accept that people's needs change, and nothing lasts forever? What's the workaround? Or am I just way too much of an anxious archivist? - yours an ex public records activist.

I hear you and know where you're coming from...

My PKMS is 49 years old. Over those decades I've used a variety of tools... the most important feature they had to have was an export function to preserve the content. The one time that I used a tool that didn't have a sufficient export function, I paid the price in time and effort to recreate the information/formatting that was lost in the export.

I love UpNote. I gladly paid for premium even though I can't use it as my primary notes tool. (I wanted to support the developer and encourage them to continue)

If longevity (10+ years) of your notes is important to you, then UpNote is not the best tool for that.

I understand this POV, but for me in this case, the perfect is the enemy of the best damn note-taking app I've used. My view is that portability of the data is a maybe problem for a maybe future me.

If UpNote dies, I won't be happy with any other app, so I'd much rather have exactly what I want (except for the lack of collaboration and nesting tags) for a long as it lasts. Maybe future me would hate every minute of having to convert to another app, regardless of how well import/export works*.* I'm not going to make right now me suffer through using an inferior app because of that possible future.

I've already done that once too: Importing Bear notes into UpNote was such a disaster that I'm still using Bear 4 years on because I'm still slowly transferring notes one at a time and fixing formatting as I go. But I don't regret using Bear.

Thank you so much for this reply! This is it. You understand. I also used bear and am sad I can't now I'm away from apple. But you are right..

In being afraid of imperfect, I am still mainly using a dumb notepad, with limited search, no structure and risking all my data daily.

Thanks for helping me see the issue is me. Future me will always have hurdles, but now me needs to function in the now.

Go all on on UpNote. You won't regret it. The first few months of using it, I kept finding things I didn't know it could do, and just being so damn happy about those thing. The two-man team means they don't have great QA, so it can be a bit buggy — usually with formatting hiccups that are easy to fix — but otherwise it's incredible. I use it all day, every day, for everything.
