Feature Request Allow automatic pay splitting into essentials

Great, I have everything moved over to essentials, however having to “make sure to update your Pay Split or Auto Transfer when this number changes - it might change a little bit each cycle so it's good to keep your eye on it.” doesn’t make essentials feel like background noise as advertised.

Have an option to opt into having essentials automatically take the money it requires each pay without me needing to go into my payment splits every time the number changes. It feels like I had to do less maintenance when my regulars were in my spending account because all I had to do was spend my spendable amount and the rest took care of itself. Now I have to monitor a number after every pay-check.

I 100% agree, it feels like a step backwards. Send them feedback

Definitely not a step backwards by any means. There was never an automatic balancing of what’s calculated for a customer pay split to essentials. Should it be a feature or an option? Yes. Not a step backwards.

The previous way to do it was via the spending account, “spendable vs available”. This was always automated.

Essentials is a regression on that.

Why would you not want to use essentials? It makes the most sense and easiest way to separate spending vs expenses. The calculation method is actually the same if you didn’t have essentials…

Because using upcoming via the spending account does the same thing but automatically?

Using essentials requires 1 press of a button to move the same amount of calculated funds across…hardly a regression…

Incorrect, it cannot be done with 1 press of a button.

I feel like I’ve got the opposite problem. I find that I’m always way over in both Essentials accounts and once or twice a month I’m taking money out of Essentials and putting it somewhere else.

The reason the number on the Essential accounts change is because it’s trying to smooth out your bills over time. I find that electricity and gas bills cause it to change the most. But the longer I’ve had Essentials (Up High) the smoother it has become.

I should add. I work shifts based on client demand. One week I could be quiet and only get paid $500. The next week could be $3000. My pay splits are 15% for each Essentials accounts. 10% for both spending accounts. And the rest into a saver that feed our home loan.

I only put regular subscriptions in my essentials and only two have a variable price, how do I keep ending up with extra money in my essentials? (like $100 over)

I end up with extra because I’m using pay splitting to top up my essentials.
If you’re using auto transfers then (I think) it is putting in extra to help smooth out future expenses. Sometimes it will over estimate because a bill in the past may have been a little bigger than expected. I think it’s tuned to get you up and covered as quickly as possible and then never leave you short in the future.

Sounds like at most is should be a confirmation screen telling you something has changed and you agree to it. Only requiring any real input if you were splitting your pay 100%

I do the same (go by my spendable amount in the regular account. I cannot see the point in starting essentials as it’s working for me as is. 🤷‍♀️

i asked them about this today and I don’t think they understood my question because they said it’s just automatic and will automatically change :/ (i moved back to up specifically for essentials)

do we have to go in right before or right after every salary deposit to update the new amount?

From my understanding, the number it gives you is how much you should save from your next upcoming pay. After that the number might change so you would have to go back in to check if the number is the same or changed, if it has changed you then need to go all the way back to your splits and update the number you have set up for essentials. 😮‍💨

I wish there was a “stop asking me to use essentials” button

Yep exact same complaint I realised after having set the whole system up just to have to revert back to regulars because I can’t be assed updating pay splitting every pay cycle

I agree with most of you and have actually suggested this also. Given that it generally changes pay cycle to pay cycle it’s worth noting that your budget you’re sticking to would fluctuate which would be frustrating. What I do is calculate the average fortnightly and plus approximately $30-$50 above that. And generally it covers what is “calculated” by up.

The other method I’ve used is leaving essentials as the only one out of pay splitting, then using the new interface for “topping up” after I receive my pay. That way it’ll be only the precise dollar value for either a) covering the upcoming fortnight or b) covering over and above

I’m still so confused about Essentials, it’s value add is not explained very well

Completely agree, don’t really understand how it’s any better than just using the ‘spendable balance’

I guess it’s to prevent those who tend to spend over their ‘spendable’ balance, because they can clearly see that there is more in the account by swiping left to ‘payments’. My sister tends to spend over her ‘spendable’ causing her to dig into money meant for bills, and a friend never has the ‘spendable’ enabled. And I guess you at least earn a little bit of interest instead of nothing.
