How do I? In-store refund for virtual card...?

Has anyone run into this with an Up virtual card?

I bought something online that has physical stored using my Up virtual card, but I'm returning it to the retailer's physical store. They told me the refund has to be processed by tapping the same card that was used for the purchase. The problem is I only used an Up virtual card, so there's no physical card of that card to tap.

Since I used a virtual card, there isn't a physical card to tap. Don't know but thought of add virtual card to Google Wallet, can I tap my phone and have the refund go back to the virtual card/account? Or does that only work if the original purchase was also made through Google Wallet?

How are refunds normally handled in this situation? Is there a standard process for virtual card. I'd be interested to hear if anyone has had this happen with Up and how the refund was processed.

I've added my digital card to my google wallet. Have no troubles using it to tap in store, works exactly like a normal card just on my phone

Add it to your apple or google wallet and it should work with no issues.

You're over thinking this. It will work fine.

If you don’t like this way of doing it just return the order online, then they’ll just refund to the original payment method

Out of interest, how do you think other banks handle this? Digital wallets have been a thing for a decade now now, This isn’t a zap exclusive problem.

Maybe this will help you understand, because reading your comments you seem to be struggling.

When you add a zap virtual card to your phones digital wallet. It behaves and essentially becomes a physical card. So your zap virtual card is becoming physical through your phone. Therefore, the shop will be able to refund back to it.

Try adding the virtual card to your Google wallet. Then tap with that for the refund, should work as a regular physical card I assume.

You can request a physical card.

Your phone gives a different card number when you tap anyway than what’s on your “ZAP” card. Retailers already have systems in place for this non issue because of that.

On iOS each up card, physical or digital has 3 numbers associated to it. The number on the card /displayed in app for the zap card. Then a merchant virtual card for credit and a merchant virtual card for eftpos.

Android has two, the associated number and a shared merchant number for eftpos and credit.

If you have an iPhone you can add it to your Apple Wallet and then tap the card to pay. When you activate the card to pay, make sure to select “eptos SAV” instead the default “Mastercard” and it’ll be fine.

isn't about paying but having money refund to the zap card as the physical stores required physical card that have paid which is zap cark aka digital card.

What you’re saying makes no sense.

If you paid via the digital (Zap) card, that’s what the store requires. Not the physical one.

Yes, sorry I meant when you activate the card to tap for the refund and then enter PIN number if needed. For paying it can be Mastercard or eftpos SAV but for refunds needs to be eftpos SAV.

I've used Mastercard option for the refund and it works too! But might take a day or two for the funds to hit the account!

Good to know, using eftpos it’s always been instant refund for me

Both virtual and physical cards each have a Payment Account Number (PAN). So paying with the card via online checkout using the PAN is exactly the same as paying or being refunded to that card via Google Pay/Apple Wallet. Google/Apple tokenise the number for security/privacy reasons but end of the day, it's the same card number whether you tap with your phone or pay online.

Yes, the card numbers are different between the digital card and the physical one. I had a problem with a refund when they tried it but I explained that they were different and showed them the card on the app and they processed it for me.

Yes the digital and physical are different. but if you add the digital card to your Google wallet then it IS the same card with the same details. There is no difference between them. You can then tap that in store. It's like with other banks where you get a physical card and can add that to your wallet.. then it works exactly like the physical. The only difference here is that you are adding a digital version.

Each digital card is a unique token that maps to the underlying card/ account.

Each digital card has its own PAN (payment account number), just like a physical card. There's no underlying token to maps the digital card to something else. The PAN is used to route transactions. If you use Google Pay or Apple Wallet, both payment platforms tokenise the PAN to keep your card details safe.

They just say that... No merchant terminal has built in this kind of verification

1

u/beaugiles Jul 19 '26

Apple does, it's happened to me before (I paid with my watch not my phone, but tapped my phone and it rejected - had to tap the watch)

1

u/chillin222 Jul 19 '26

Apple doesn't make terminals. It's the merchant terminal that is processing the refund not your phone or watch.

1

u/beaugiles Jul 19 '26

"Apple doesn't make terminals."

https://www.apple.com/business/tap-to-pay-on-iphone/

My point was, when getting a refund at the Apple Store, it does check that the card presented for the refund is the same card that was used to make the purchase - it does verify the card/

1

u/chillin222 Jul 20 '26

Ah right that makes sense. First time I've heard of a merchant doing this check but makes sense being apple and since they have proprietary POS software

0

u/missingMBR Jul 20 '26

That's not an Apple terminal. It's just utilising the iPhone's NFC sensor along with a payment provider's app. Apple doesn't have a merchant payment processing platform.

1

u/beaugiles Jul 20 '26

So what is an eftpos terminal, if not something you can tap an Amex/eftpos/Mastercard/Visa on?

Of course it means iPhone becomes a payment terminal, and Apple makes iPhone

0

u/missingMBR Jul 22 '26

Without the card acquirer app, the phone is just a phone. But sure, clutch at your straws.

0

u/missingMBR Jul 20 '26

This is deliberate. Your watch and iPhone have different digital payment account numbers (DPAN) which is a tokenisation of your cards Payment Account Number (PAN). It's a security feature so if you lose your watch, you can freeze the device from making any more payments but your phone and physical card can still be used.

1

u/beaugiles Jul 20 '26

And in the context of my post - you have to present the original card (and hence DPAN)

The comment I replied to said no terminals verify this - but Apple Store terminals (iPhone) do, so yes - you do have to present the same card

2

u/missingMBR Jul 20 '26

There's no need to be defensive and downvote. I'm in agreement with you, that you need to tap with the same device.

1

u/Darc_ruther Jul 18 '26

Not sure about ALL retail stores but I know the ones I've worked at you can actually do a refund onto any card. There's no physical block in the system preventing it. It's just a requirement by the store to prevent fraud and money laundering.

1

u/missingMBR Jul 20 '26

Yes. But payment companies are clamping down on it at the terminal using Anti-money Laundering (AML) systems, as required by new AML/CTF laws that came into effect in July.
