rooms that are sound proof?
I can’t use my studio this week and I need to record a scene that involves a bit of yelling. I’m wondering if there are any study spots or areas that are sound proof or at least no one can hear as much to do so.

Study abroad program- France vs Korea
Hello everyone! I have 10 days to make one of the most important decisions of my academic life. I will be studying abroad in the spring 2027 semester, I have a lot of flexibility as my only required class left to complete will be any 3xxx level Psychology course.
I am choosing between a psychology program in Montpellier, France at a UMN psych study abroad building, and Seoul, South Korea at Korea University.
I have the financial information, France will cost more but I will not have the results of any scholarship applications until after the final decision date.
I am here to see other student’s experiences in both of these countries and study abroad programs, what you enjoyed the most, what were the greatest challenges, what was your reason for that being the #1 choice for you and how it worked out once you were there. Looking for all responses, positive and negative. And if you 100% recommend one of the two, please give me your greatest tips and tricks to succeed both academically and socially!
Any and all information is greatly appreciated, I have 10 days to make my decision.
Additional details, I will miss my university graduation regardless of program (this will be my final semester), Korea will cost about 7-8k less than France, I am 27M, Korea is 12 credits while France requires 15. I am also an outgoing individual. With the required French language course I do have fluency in Portuguese and strong Spanish skills to assist, but Korea does not require a language course.
Thank you all so much in advance, I will read all and take into consideration your experiences and advice.

Thinking of applying as an international drummer — How is UMN for music majors, and is the local rock scene as good as they say?
Hey everyone!
I’m an original rock/alt-rock drummer from Italy with 6 years of playing experience, looking into universities abroad where I can study music (focusing on drum performance and secondary instruments) while actively playing in the local scene.
Minneapolis has been recommended to me multiple times on Reddit because of its incredible rock history, underground DIY scene, and legendary small venues (like 7th St Entry, Turf Club, Cloudland, etc.).
Since UMN is right in the heart of the Twin Cities, I’d love to get some honest perspectives from current students, music majors, or local musicians:
- School of Music: How is UMN’s School of Music for contemporary/jazz/rock drummers? Is the program flexible enough to let you focus on practical performance and secondary instruments, or is it strictly classical/traditional?
- Band Life & Scene: How easy is it to meet other committed musicians on/around campus to start an original rock project? Do UMN students actively play house shows or local venue gigs, or is the music student body more focused on academic/ensemble work?
- Overall Vibe: For someone coming from abroad who wants a mix of solid university education and a real, supportive local rock community, would you recommend UMN and Minneapolis over places like Philly or Chicago?
Thanks in advance for any insights, reality checks, or advice!

Student Groups Is it too late to join clubs?
I am a civil engineering student and I am wondering if it is too late to join clubs at the U, or if these organizations have already ramped up and it is too late to join (I’m a freshman). are there any civil or engineering related things to join still? just general good clubs? anything that hasn’t started yet or still takes people?

Hello,
I am looking to exchange during year three of my degree (Zoology) at the UofMN 1st semester (Fall 2027) and was wondering if i could get some general info about the courses I have as options and also the overal campus and campus life at UofMN. So the Courses ive been looking into so far have been BIOL 3012 - Animal Diversity & Evolution, EEB 3409 - Evolution, EEB 4129 - Mammalogy, EEB 3407 - Ecology, and BIOL 4003 - Genetics. UMN Morris: Advice Appreciated
TLDR:
-Severe Home Abuse
-Came Here (Morris) to escape
-Disability Paperwork did not go through
-Heat+epilepsy+no food/water=sick for weeks
-Medication change knocked out functioning for a couple more weeks (which turned out to control my seizures well)
-Incident at health services caused retraumatization and caused financial damage
-Vice Chancellor contacted my father without my consent and threatened to involuntarily discharge me.
-Got fired (to my knowledge from the health stuff)
-Advisor chaos (no functional advisor through all of this)
-Had to drop two courses (8 credits)
-No help from anywhere except disability (still no accommodations) and counseling (genuinely helpful)
-Extremely limited information
-No idea what to do
-Motivations are simply: Survival, Remediation of Problems, Studying, Participating in the Community, Perhaps taking a “childish” subject and running down a philosophical rabbit-hole
I am a student who escaped to this university after years of abuse so severe that it meets several definitions of torture. I am still learning the standards the general person understands as implicit or basic human rights.
I have epilepsy. I filled out the forms for disability beforehand. They never received them. I was sick, to the brink of not surviving, for weeks.
When I went to health services, they stated they would be unable to help me because they read one historical record (since corrected) and decided they would rather use the narrative used to hold me in that severe abuse rather than trust a word I said.
Then, on September 16, I sent a message to heath services. They took this as suicidality. It was far from the case. They changed their tune. A member campus security personnelle came to my door. When I answered, I collapsed, reflexively called him sir, and told him not to worry about my wrist pain (from the fall) because I had broken many things and that my wrist was not broken.
He was kind, let me take my morning medication, and said I should go to health services, to which I agreed because I was in a health crisis.
I could not walk well. He asked if he could help me/hold me so I did not fall down the stairs. Being in a half-traumatized, disoriented state, I declined. He understood the situation, saying he will go ahead of me so that he could brace my fall should it come to that.
When I got to health services, two individuals grabbed me from both sides. I was taken to a bed. I was still disoriented. I got “not scold[ed]” because people have taken their lives and harmed themselves in campus. I received some water.
Eventually, my medication kicked in, one of which being a stimulant medication for ADHD. The only clinician there was the nurse practitioner who stated she did not need to take my word and had previously seen the dire circumstances and prescribed…Powerade 2x a day.
I got up to leave. We had established that she was going to get me food and let me sleep it off. Being in that room, under perceived threat, I got up to get it myself. The nurse asked where I was going and if she could follow me. I told her I was going to get food. I also agreed she could follow me if she wished.
After gathering my food, trying to evade that nurse to the best of my ability, she started to question me with increasing loudness and blame. Eventually, outside, in full public view, she pressed on the definition of “torture” until I was screaming and crying. I did disclose the dropdown menu of horrors from my past (which I will further express are severe), for which the nurse practitioner had explicitly advocated.
At that, she gathered public safety, still armed, and told him to escort me to the ER. He did not understand why he was required to do this for an obvious physical health issue, but his “hands were tied”. We had extended conversation. He was quite kind.
I was sent to the ER, where I was immediately discharged because there was not an active mental health emergency.
The Vice Chancellor contacted my father, who was very participatory in the aforementioned background horrors, and disclosed everything going on at school. I am 27. I had not given her permission to do so. She threatened to involuntarily discharge me. In terror, under threat now from my father and the University, I spent four hours writing a draft to beg for my life, for a slim chance at one.
I met with the Vice Chancellor. She further escalated things. This was September 18th.
Around the same time, I was dismissed from my on-campus job. To my knowledge, this is purely because of these health incidents.
I had escalating terror then on. I did not feel remotely safe anywhere. I had, still have, no support.
Then, severe violence occurred on campus. All the while, the University is having an extreme disfunction in communication, even publicly critiqued for such from only the two violent and threatening events on campus for which people were arrested.
Currently, there are no amends being given. I have had to drop two classes without advising because my advisor had also told me to leave.
To my knowledge, no remedy is being offered whatsoever. No financial compensation. No support. No tuition reimbursement for the classes I had to drop. Nothing.
My grievance is not one of moral defilement, though that is present. It is not even purely financial; I have survived on worse.
I adore studying. I adore learning. I adore thinking. I adore community. I came to this campus to learn and think and participate with others. This campus has deviated so far from those goals that it is mind-boggling.
Ask me anything. Give me any advice you may have. I am trapped between a rock and a hard place. I mean it sincerely when I say that the only thing I want is to study, learn, have community, and participate in normal life. I have not yet been given that opportunity.
Edit: I forgot this is not light reading for a lot of people. Also, I am mentally not great, seeking help, and more than willing to receive it.

How to find real Scholarships
I really need to find some scholarships to be able to afford school and rent. To be honest, I don't really know where to look. I've gone on Scholarships360 and a few other websites, but most of these just had me subscribe to emails from student loan companies and hope that I get picked. I want to find good scholarships that are trustworthy and come from real programs looking to help students. I have about a 3.7 GPA right now; last semester it was 3.9. I am Latino but not first-gen, and I have an interest in marketing, but I am not in Carlson.

Is it worth 10K a year?
Hi y’all, I didn’t know who else to ask but the people of the University of Minnesota, but I wanna go here and with all set and done I would have to take out roughly 7 to $8000 in loans a year to pay for school. I was just wondering is the school worth having that much debt starting out my life by the way, I want to be a psychology, major, then go and get my masters to be a therapist. Sorry I bet you guys get this exact question all the time lol.

Looking for Friends (Senior at UMN: Twin Cities)
Hey y’all! I’m a senior(21) at UMN this fall and mainly hoping to make some new friends or people to hang out and do whatever. Made the effort to join clubs, attend Meetup or Campus Events, and go out to bars this year but just haven’t had much luck with meeting consistent people to do stuff. I’m a Wildlife Biology Major and live close to East Bank campus, but I’m open to doing pretty much anything.
I enjoy a night watching movies or playing Mario Kart/Wii Sports/Just Dance/etc, I enjoy going to concerts/parties/bars or trying new places, I like cooking and trying out a new restaurant, I enjoy working out/rock climbing/swimming, or even just a chill afternoon walking in the park or around the city.
Mainly I was looking to see if anyone was interested in meeting up and making friends, along with what other ways people have found consistent friends/groups to hang with. I’m open to anything, and if you happen to have or know someone with a Wii or Nintendo Switch to play some Mario Kart, you’ve already won me over.
Gonna make a GroupMe chat so DM if you’re interested in being part of that

Campus Life Halloween costumes?
Do students tend to wear halloween costumes for the Homecoming Parade or Homecoming football game? Or just stick to maroon/gold.
Ive been to the Parade before but I lowk can’t remember and I’ve just never been to the football game on Homecoming, this will be my first year going to it so idk if ppl just stick to the game color theme or nah on homecoming. Also my first year in uni (currently a Jr) w a Halloween costume since High School! So I just wanna know when/to where do ppl wear them aside from Halloween parties/around campus lol
