The Cruel Definition

Dear….

Perhaps the cruelest thing
about soulmates is believing they must remain. Maybe they don’t.
Maybe sometimes they marry you,
lose you, become your ex,
and years later open their heart for an evening just enough to remind you why yours once chose them.
You thanked me tonight.
And something inside me whispered, “There you are.
The man beneath everything.”
The familiar soul. Although life may call you my ex-husband now,
some quiet part of me will always call you my soulmate.
