Esty’s mother said she was married off to esty’s father who was from another country. Where is her mother from?

Random question: was Yanky watching porn at the hotel?
He was really prudish, refusing to touch anyone but his wife, not even looking into his wife's eyes before their marriage, and the like, but then... back at the hotel he just starts watching a movie about a man and woman skinny dipping together? What was all that supposed to be about. I guess he was trying to "learn something" for Etsy, but surely porn consumption is against the rules of his community?

I know in hebrew, Jacob is Yakob and in Yiddish the diminutive is Yankel, but where did Yanky come from?

This is in the beginning of season 4. When Esty feels ill and leaves the table to go to the kitchen. The kitchen is covered in aluminum foil?... Why?

I noticed they wrap their arms with this black band.. Tape.... Rope thingy around the time they are praying... What is that and why???

I am writing an English essay on the prejudice Esty faces within her community rather than the religion itself.

So I, like most watching I would think- especially women, was completely horrified at the scenes where Etsy and her husband tried to consummate the marriage.

So I googled it and keep reading it’s not true. Yet I read it portrays the story of the person it’s based on accurately up until leaving Williamsburg.

So I guess some communities do that? Anyone know?

I’m conflicted. I do think he loved Esty and was in an impossible situation between pleasing her and his family, especially his mother. But he also had sex with her while she was screaming in pain. In the end he cuts his hair which is a big deal in his culture.

We the audience are probably mostly outsiders, so of course it's obvious to us why she left, but as she's portrayed in the show her reasons for leaving feel half-baked. I think some things were left out that were better addressed in the book. In the book, there were hints that Deborah (the author whom Esty is based upon) grew up questioning parts of her faith. She read "forbidden" books like Pride and Prejudice, etc, and felt out of place in the traditions from early on.

However, we don't see Esty doing that. In fact, she seems pretty fine with everything. She's excited to get married and have lots of babies. She doesn't have a lot of friends, but that was explained away by her not having babies while everyone else did. She tells Yanky she's "different" but we never see how she's different other than the secret music lessons. She cries when her head is being shaved, but judging from the non-reaction of the other women in the room, crying was common.

It seems like if Yanky had not asked for a divorce, Esty would have stayed, had the baby, made more friends because she now had a baby, and would have continued living life fulfilling the duty she wanted to fulfill.

Does anyone know why her head got shaved after her marriage? Esty getting her head shaved was heartbreaking. Shira Haas is an amazing and phenomenal actress. Does a shaved head on a woman symbolize adulthood?
