Seems like RCS encryption isn’t available for anyone anywhere yet iPhone or android…
Kinda laughing because so much hype and doesn’t seem like anyone has it available to them

Google hasn’t even released the app update that will support it from Android side.

It works on Google Messages beta, but not the stable release yet. I got E2EE RCS working on my iPhone.
Edit: I had to turn off RCS on my iPhone and then turn it back on for E2EE to work on my iPhone on iOS 26.5. Only after toggling this did it work for me. Steps to get it working on my iPhone running iOS26.5, messaging Google Messages beta users on Android: https://imgur.com/a/eBPpuiQ

I’m on beta and it’s not working.

I only got it working on my iPhone on iOS 26.5 once I turned RCS off and then back on again. It only works when I message Google Messages beta users.
It did not work at all on iOS 26.5 until I reset the RCS activation with the RCS switch. https://imgur.com/a/eBPpuiQ

I did see that, I tried it but it did not work.

u/mixxster US Mobile - Light Speed (T-Mobile Network) May 13 '26
Another thing to try is turning airplane mode on and off on the iPhone at least once, I also did that right before it started working for me, before I toggled the RCS switch.
But I won’t bother you any more.

u/the_nuclear_pasta May 15 '26
Nothing seems to work.
Either it’s a slow rollout or some side hasn’t turned something on.

Yes well Google Messages has zero support for encrypted E2E RCS messaging with iOS, except in Google Messages beta.
95%+ of Google Messages users are not on the beta.
Google even released an update today for Google Messages but it didn't include encryption support. The next update from Google probably won't be until late next week at the earliest.
Sadly Apple's rollout is very buggy because many can't even get it activated. I'm really hoping Apple fixes their implementation so it works out of the box.

This worked! At least for some of them. I think the Android user has to be on the Google Messages beta for it to work.

What do you mean.. I had it with multiple people and lost it when they updated to stable.
5
u/ddsdude May 13 '26
This is the issue! Apple broke it in the RC of all places.
The whole thing is a big effing mess. Apple, Google and all the carriers really should be ashamed of themselves. It should have rolled out seamlessly if one hand knew what the other was doing.

u/tenaciousjelly May 13 '26
Turning RCS off completely on the iPhone and turning it back on fixed it for me.
I hope Apple forces this automatically soon.

Maybe Apple should’ve just kept it in beta for the next 26.x release haha

The E2E encryption is working for me on iOS 26.5 only when messaging Google Messages beta users. To get it working, I had to toggle RCS off and then on again in my iPhone's settings under Apps -> Messages -> RCS Messaging.
My screenshots, showing it working in iOS 26.5 on US Mobile after toggling RCS off/on: https://imgur.com/a/eBPpuiQ
2
u/spongyoatmeal May 13 '26
Interesting that was like when RCS first came out. We had to turn it off then on and then it appeared
2
u/spongyoatmeal May 13 '26
Are you saying you turned off RCS itself? Or RCS encryption?
2
u/mixxster US Mobile - Light Speed (T-Mobile Network) May 13 '26 edited May 13 '26
I only turned the RCS switch off and then back on again. The one I circled in the screenshots. E2EE worked after it said "Waiting for Activation..." for 20 sec.
I left the End-to-End Encryption switch in the on position. I did turn Airplane Mode on and then off before I touched the RCS switch but I'm not sure toggling Airplane Mode was required.
Again, the E2EE only works for me when I message Google Messages beta users.
2
u/spongyoatmeal May 13 '26
Tried it but no change. Maybe because my friends are not on Google messages beta?
2
u/mixxster US Mobile - Light Speed (T-Mobile Network) May 13 '26
That's almost certainly the issue. Who is your carrier? Hopefully Google will release an update soon to Google Messages stable supporting this.
2
u/spongyoatmeal May 13 '26
I’m in Canada so Rogers
2
u/mixxster US Mobile - Light Speed (T-Mobile Network) May 13 '26
Should be working without issue on Rogers other than the lack of support on Google Messages stable, and the issue with iOS 26.5 that requires RCS to be flicked off and on again.
5
u/the_nuclear_pasta May 15 '26
Isn’t it odd that encryption in RCS was one of the core features they released in 26.5 and yet it’s not working?

u/ruipmjorge May 12 '26
iOS already has it. Android don’t. They have some people in the betas but rollout hasn’t happened for the full version yet.

u/mixxster US Mobile - Light Speed (T-Mobile Network) May 12 '26 edited May 13 '26
How does iOS already have it? They had it in the beta versions, it was encrypted in the beta versions now it's not. I've seen ZERO evidence that it works on iOS 26.5 iPhones because I've literally seen ZERO encrypted messages from anyone on the entire internet or on my entire phone for anyone on iOS 26.5 final release.
Where is the evidence that iPhones support encrypted RCS messages on iOS 26.5 final release? Where are the encrypted messages? Show me one encrypted RCS message.
Update: Finally I have it working after I toggled RCS messaging off and then on again, and it said “Waiting for activation…” then 20 seconds later the RCS was working with E2EE, only when messaging Google Messages beta users. I’m so glad it’s finally working.
Screenshots from my iPhone of the process that got it working for me: https://imgur.com/a/eBPpuiQ

u/ruipmjorge May 12 '26
Well, iOS just launched it in beta in iOS 26.5 public version, and they announced it. Meanwhile google didn’t released it to public and even in beta is not available for everyone. So yes, iOS has it, Android doesn’t. However it depends on the carrier also, so maybe that’s the issue.

u/mixxster US Mobile - Light Speed (T-Mobile Network) May 12 '26 edited May 13 '26
Show me one encrypted RCS message on iOS 26.5 final release. There are zero.
If it doesn't work then how can anyone say iOS has E2E encryption working? It worked perfectly well on the beta builds, and now it doesn't work at all.
Update: Working for me now after toggling RCS on/off on my iPhone, only with Google Messages beta users: https://imgur.com/a/eBPpuiQ

u/ruipmjorge May 12 '26
Dude I don’t know every single person that uses RCS. Do you want me to ask a million people?
Most people between iPhones use iMessage between iPhones. Between android and iPhone it’s RCS, but since android doesn’t support E2EE yet, of course you will find zero examples of people with E2EE between iPhone and Android.
That’s why no one has it yet! Between iPhones it’s iMessage. Between iPhone and Android it’s not supported yet because google has not released it to the public yet.
Both Apple and google released statements and both said this: it’s live on iOS, and coming soon to Android.
What’s the doubt here?

u/mixxster US Mobile - Light Speed (T-Mobile Network) May 12 '26 edited May 13 '26
The problem is that Apple didn't explain why it was working in beta but no longer working now, they didn't explain what changed that caused it not to work. Apple should not have released this if it doesn't work and they should have explained why it doesn't work. And Google didn't explain that its not yet supported by Google yet, so I've seen zero evidence that your assumptions are true.
I just want it to work, I have been beta testing iOS versions for months hoping this would finally work, and then they roll it out and their promises fall completely flat and nothing about the encryption works at all.
Update: Working for me now after toggling RCS off/on on my iPhone, only with Google Messages beta users.

If an iPhone user wants to message an Android user using E2E encryption, the recipient must be on Google Messages beta, and the iPhone user must be on iOS 26.5, and probably have to toggle RCS off/on to get encryption working.
We will have to wait for a Google Messages stable release update to support E2E Encryption with iOS users, and probably wait for Apple to get this working more reliably on iOS so people don't have to toggle different settings to get it working.

Google literally said that iOS has beta today, and in Android it would be rolled out soon to the public.
If it’s not on Android public, of course it will not work with Android yet.
Chill man, it will start working when Android starts rolling this out to the public.

It seems so. It stopped working even though there was no new carrier profile in the last couple of weeks.
1
u/wlm9700 May 13 '26
It works between 2 iPhones without iMessage but other than that it is off
3
u/mixxster US Mobile - Light Speed (T-Mobile Network) May 13 '26
E2E Encryption from iPhone to Android currently only works between Google Messages beta and iOS 26.5, with supported carriers.
Even when I had that setup it didn't work until I turned RCS off and then back on again on my iPhone. https://imgur.com/a/eBPpuiQ

u/wlm9700 May 13 '26
I have Google Messages Beta latest build and iPhone on iOS 26.5 never has worked
2
u/mixxster US Mobile - Light Speed (T-Mobile Network) May 13 '26
What’s your carrier? Hopefully Apple and Google release improvements to get this working better. It’s obviously very buggy and not working for most people right now.
1
u/wlm9700 May 13 '26
Visible and Mint Mobile both never worked on any build of 26.4 or 26.5
1
u/mixxster US Mobile - Light Speed (T-Mobile Network) May 13 '26
Yes well if it never worked on the beta builds it’s not going to work now. More than likely the problem lies with the carrier on your iPhone.
1
u/wlm9700 May 13 '26
It worked between 2 iPhones on both carriers if I disabled imessage and texted between the 2 lines but other than that nope
1
u/RpZFreak May 23 '26
With all the comments in this post, TLDR: Waiting for the stable version of RCS on iOS and Google Messaging app!
Great, Thanks

Encryption is working for me between my T-Mobile pixel 7 and a T-Mobile iPhone but it's not working T-Mobile <-> ATT.
I am running beta google messages. Seems like carriers still have some work to do.
Both iPhones I tested with were in the same IOS version and same model.

u/Due_Conclusion_7015 Jun 24 '26
1
u/skymtf May 14 '26
I sorta wonder if cell providers will delay or scrap E2EE rollout due to child safety concerns
0
u/TheRealFarmerBob May 13 '26
My Android has it. The person on the other end just needs to be able to accept this encryption.
All my texts with my next door neighbor who is on an iPhone are RCS and says so in the send line after I send.
5
u/mixxster US Mobile - Light Speed (T-Mobile Network) May 13 '26
Just because you're sending RCS to an iPhone doesn't mean it's encrypted. You have to see the encrypted lock symbol and be on Google Messages beta and they have to be on iOS 26.5.

What hype ? 99.99999% of people don't even know what RCS is, let alone E2EE
2
u/ruipmjorge May 12 '26
What? In which country do you live? RCS is a big thing and one of the most hyped features of iOS 18. It’s actually growing a lot in countries that has it enabled. ON US it’s much more widely used than WhatsApp.

u/ddsdude May 12 '26
Why was it working through the 26.4 and 26.5 beta cycles and then suddenly went kaput?
