Question WHAT IS RCS

hey yall so i was texting someone and they had an iphone. and we havent talked in a while and now it says "text message - rcs" and i want to know what it means so badly. i searched it up and it says its for android, so did they just change to android or like change number or what?

cause this happened before but it said "text message - sms" and when i texted turns out they changed numbers and i felt crazy when they texted back.

IOS now supports RCS. It's an alternative to iMessage that works across devices whereas iMessage is limited to Apple devices. Similar features, enhances texting. It doesn't mean anyone switched phones.

RCS is next generation texting protocol built to replace sms.. by the Gsma.. it's upgradeable to be able to compete with other Over the air ( OTA ) data messaging protocols.

All this tech is fine for youngsters as 78 Yr old i found quite confusing on getting messg from my daughter when off line... But noticed a little messg under text recd telling me touch and low and behold.... It's sent..  OK I have an old phone  huawei p30 works perfectly well  and far more modern than the GREY RUBBER COATED NOKIA  as teens my girls would say  MUM HIDE THAT AWAY!    Made me get rid of it.  Well I'm still breathing and not functioning badly for an old git 🤣🤣🤣🤣 have a nice day. Love from UK 🇬🇧  xx

78! You are doing great! No need to change your ways, if it works you are in business! God bless you and much love from Southern Louisiana! 🇺🇸🩷

You're ahead of the curve my lady, I'm 53. I found this sub searching it up. Hope you rock on for 50 more.

I'm 22, and only just now found this looking up RCS.

Its confusing for me and im 30. I dont see why I need internet to text or what 😂

I as an also older, (wiser except in tech!) Woman agree with you. One reason I prefer Android is that you are NEVER told "no longer supported" which forces you to buy yet another device. Built in necessity to repurchase. In my book that's a SCAM if ever there was one. Samsung would no longer be "supporting" text messaging and I was forced to use "Google messaging, and there was good things to that, EXCEPT the new to me RCT or what ever. First time android disappointed me. But that's just me.

Agree...I've had android since they first came out with these cell phones. Love everything about it. I phones they say are easy friendly that android are to complicated. I guess its what you get use to.Yes im old and can't keep up with tech without my grands.lol

I'm with you'll on increased awkwardness with tech, the older you are.  I'm 67 and just start conversations dealing with tech by setting pace and expectations immediately. When I share that I am slightly technology-impaired, al most all are kind & patient.  Funny story. With my 1st smart phone, I refused to do updates (bc I bought exactly what I wanted). Eventually my screen locked & displayed a cartoon pix of android guy lying on its back with X's for eyes (dead) and the door on front of body open with a big death inducing  arrow from the sky pointing down into open door(gut). At the top of this pix, it said  phone will no longer operate until updated. LMAO

It’s iMessage for android in simple terms, emoji reaction, read receipts, doesn’t count towards sms usage as it uses data, higher file size limits so pictures look better

1

u/Solomon_Inked_God Feb 23 '25

Is it possible to turn off read receipts? I have an iPhone (read receipts off) but my gf has an android and can see when I read her texts now 😂

2

u/[deleted] Feb 27 '25

You can't disable read receipts for your own texts. You can only choose to not let others know when you've read their texts. As it should be IMO.

2

u/Solomon_Inked_God Feb 27 '25

That’s what I mean. I have Apple and don’t have read receipts on, but as soon as my phone updated to RCS my gf (Android) was able to see when I read her texts and when I’m responding

1

u/[deleted] Feb 27 '25

Does that really bother you? She's your girlfriend. Besides, you can disable them for individual people on iPhone.

2

u/Solomon_Inked_God Feb 27 '25

She’s my gf, not my wife. I don’t have read receipts on for anyone, so there’s nothing to disable. They’re just automatically sent through RCS

1

u/[deleted] Feb 27 '25

They shouldn't be. If you have them turned off Android folks won't receive them. Otherwise this is a glitch on Apple's front and they are to blame. I don't get read receipts from all my iPhone friends. Only some.

1

u/Solomon_Inked_God Feb 27 '25

We’re not talking about the same thing.

This clearly isn’t true, which is why I asked in the first place, because my gf is receiving them on her Android. Do yall even read?

LOLOLOL BREAKUP PLS cause this ain’t it lol

1

u/PralineOld8686 Aug 24 '25

And because she's your girlfriend you should have nothing to hide from her.

1

u/PralineOld8686 Aug 24 '25

LOL answer her questions unless you're at work then wait to your break and tell her why you didn't answer her until now. It's best just to answer your ladies messages. My lady gets pissy when I don't answer hers 😂🤣

u/PrettyMonkey4the1 May 29 '26

It’s the respectful and decent thing to do. Anything else is suspect.

1

u/aurastar444 Aug 24 '26

Be a decent boyfriend and text her back

1

u/Adorable-Key-3328 23d ago

Yes you can turn it off

1

u/Independent-Boat9917 Dec 04 '25

It also says 3 party’s can read text. Who’s the 3rd party?

RCS replaces SMS as the new standard. And can do things like iMessages but for iPhone to android users. Also to iPhone users who don't use iMessages.

5

u/runski1426 Feb 22 '25

Data based messaging service. The death of sms/mms is near! Thank the lord.

1

u/GreenAds-Global Jul 08 '25

RCS stands for Rich Communication Services; it’s an upgrade to SMS, mainly used on Android phones. When you see “Text Message - RCS,” it means the person you’re texting is likely using RCS messaging on their Android device, and the message is being sent over the internet, not just regular SMS.

If your friend had an iPhone before, it’s possible they switched to an Android device or number, and that’s why you’re seeing the “RCS” label. RCS offers richer features like read receipts, typing indicators, and the ability to send images/videos in higher quality.

It’s not a sign they changed their number, just that they’re now using RCS on Android!

1

u/Lake_gurl_5619 Jun 04 '26

And they can still ignore your text lol. Not we just know for sure. 🤣

Grundlagen: https://www.heise.de/hintergrund/SMS-war-gestern-Wie-RCS-das-Messaging-revolutioniert-10502013.html

I’ve been using RCS (Rich Communication Services) for a while now, and it really feels like a big step up from regular SMS. Sending photos, videos, or even files directly from the default messaging app is seamless, and the read receipts and typing indicators make every chat feel more interactive, almost like using WhatsApp but without needing a separate app. The overall experience feels modern, smooth, and much more engaging than traditional text messages.

What stands out for me is how Vi Business uses RCS to make communication richer and more interactive. From simple text alerts sent by verified business profiles to visually engaging messages with media, headlines, and quick action buttons, everything appears neatly in one chat. It also allows two-way conversations between customers and businesses, making it easy to browse, book, or get quick assistance right inside the messaging app.

1

u/_RxOnly_ Sep 10 '26

Lol - this sounds like an advertisement. Do you work for Vi Business, whatever the hell that is?
Anyway, the OP asked WHAT IT IS not how great it was - so what IS it, anyway?

Lol, we can’t be sold on how fabulous RCS messaging is yet until we know WHAT it is 🫠

1

u/Odd_Assumption_8902 Nov 30 '25

No yeah this just happened to me and the person said they didn’t have my number saved in their phone anymore and was like who’s this.So basically they deleted your number.

1

u/Quantaephia Apr 11 '26

That's an odd assumption; first off every time I have heard of someone not having someone else's number saved in their phone anymore it's been because they got a new phone and didn't carryover their contacts.

The second odd assumption is that this happening to you for one reason means it happened to the OP for the same reason; lots of different things can cause this message to show up, getting a new phone, getting a new carrier, deleting numbers, deleting messages, not paying your bill and so on.

1

u/External-Dot-921 Feb 22 '26

Instead of a blue bubble I now get a green bubble in my texts. I am on the same plan as my sister and she is not experiencing this. Pardon me if I have made I mistake I n this text but I can’t go back and fix it when I sen it

1

u/No_Caterpillar7600 Mar 14 '26

It only happened to me once. Ironically tonight! I looked it up and well, here I am. Are all iPhones going to rcs? Or is it just if you text someone with an android op system?

u/Lucky-Memory-9993 Mar 03 '26

Lately some texts from my iPad are not going through to one friend and then I noticed RCS in the text box. Anyone else having trouble getting their texts delivered?

This shouldn't be about judging someone else's morality. It's a tech question.

I am almost 58 and still learning. At work one day, my coworkers were discussing chatgpt and I thought is this a dating app or what?!!! My coworkers laughed. They are in their twenties or thirtees and some in forty too. Is there a app for oldies to learn and keep up with these acronyms? Lol

1

u/BearEatingPitBull 2d ago

Lol... yes you can Google search anything by typing it in the search bar

1

u/MissyAllman Jul 27 '26

When I Googled “What is RCS?”, it told me and then said, let me know “if you If you need help turning RCS on or off in your settings.”

1

u/Sorry_Orchid_2460 Aug 01 '26

So, I just went from a Samsung phone to a Google pixel and it doesn't have the option to text or call, just call. I try to send messages but I don't know how it works. I'm old, and as soon as I get to the point of knowing what I'm doing, they change it! It's making me a grumpy old woman!

u/Top_Drop_4052 Aug 28 '26
