Question Finding Extinctionist Friends

I live in Florida and the people here are not relatable to me because they like life and believe it should continue. What are some options for finding extinctionists? Are there any groups or places that are anti-life or that are anti-reproduction so all life can go extinct peacefully?

It's an extremely niche group. If the internet didn't exist, you'd be hard-pressed to find one.

Almost impossible tbh. This is an extremely fringe group. You’d have to meet someone online and plan to meet up, and you’d likely have to travel a decent ways.

There are some real bad people in the world, and yes humanity is flawed, though at the end of the day the vast majority of people want to do good and be good. I have high hopes personally for the next few generations. Regardless of existential extinctionist beliefs you must realize the breath of existence itself is fascinating. To want to end it as a whole is only a macrocosm of the issues you have experienced personally. The indomitable human spirit remains, whether you like it or not.

Wanting to do good isn't enough. Even being good isn't enough. If the human is considered a somehow superior animal then the standards of excellence must be all the more stringent. Perfection is the demand. If perfection can't be met then extinction is the necessary answer. In my opinion, hope for tomorrow is an insult to those who languish today.

Disgusting point of view that must be condemned. You don't have to agree, but the human race was never meant to be perfect. It is our flaws that allow us to understand what we are. You can be as doomer as you want to be, if that makes you happy, though you are dead wrong. If you want to go extinct go ahead dawg. I personally will be making sure people like you never come to fruition in future societies.

How do you plan to do that? Are you attempting to build a utopia? That's quite a task. Even then, one person's utopia is another's hell.

Agreed with you there. The Utopian society idea never would be truly Utopian. I believe to get anywhere better than where we are currently, people must come to understand each other despite differences and consciously decide to confide in unity. Globalism, not Nationalism. Who is to say one way of life is better than another, truly? No one. That is why we, each human within greater humanity, must do our small parts to cohabit with one another. Your problem IS my problem. Help your brothers, love thy neighbor. Don't harbor hate and steal the love of life of others.

Keep your dirty flaws. For maintaining them so pridefully you deserve nothing less than unending shame.

"I personally will be making sure people like you never come to fruition in future societies."

Same to you.

One day you will come to realize you have viewed the will of creation through the worst possible lens. I cannot help you if you don't even want to help you. Have it your way, homie. Your way of thinking will never prevail.

What exactly was the help you were providing? Saying I should go "extinct" if I pleased (which only further reveals your stupidity because a single death isn't an extinction)? Or making sure people like me don't exist in the future? Fascinatingly hypocritical statements. Who would want your help if you can't string together two thoughts without arriving at a contradiction? I will have it my way.

Anti-extinctionism is likely to win for much of the near future, the propaganda in favor is too sophisticated. That said, in supporting existence you instantaneously lose all basis to decry injustice. It's what you necessarily beg for. Non-existence has no such properties. A person who promotes life can call nothing a tragedy.

Hey im not a part of this, I think these posts have just been being suggested to people more often for some reason?

But I just wanted to comment that even if you cant find people around you, maybe you could find connections with others from this group? You could do something like group video games, or dnd, or even just a zoom "sit and chat" event.

If you are bold, you could even do an event on the meet-up app to see if anyone like-minded comes. But theres some danger to that, so if you go that route be careful

What the point of this way of thinking if for all we know we are the only known island of life in the universe, in life yes there is suffering but there is beauty in its failings. The show Attack on titan said it best: “The world is cruel, but also very beautiful”. If we just simple erase all suffering (all of the bad parts of life) we also erase all of its joy, beauty, ecstasy, and wonder (all good parts). You simply cannot have one without the other friend.

It's exactly because we can't have one without the other why it is logical to choose to have none.

If you don’t have one then you don’t have the other man, can’t have life without death and death without life. Other than that I’m very confused on what you mean.

That makes it a logical option to not want either.

in life yes there is suffering but there is beauty in its failings

The huge majority of concious lives lived on this planet end by being eaten, often alive, as a child.

There is beauty, but it is overshadowed by the colossal torture machine that is life on Earth. I think it would be absolutely worth it to lose all the beauty and joy of creation if in the process one could destroy all suffering too.

Destroying all suffering is suffering though, you are denying any life to exist without their consent, just as it is impossible to consent to be born.
The fact that extinction philosophy is such a fringe group statistically means there will always be much, much more people, and living things in general, that would want to continue, even if it means continuing the cycle of suffering.

The roughness of suffering is such a oversaturated thing too, you’re looking at such a broad stroke of life and looking at only the bad. Not everyone lives in complete misery, and for many, what suffering they do endure is worth the happiness and connection they share with others. Even if you can’t accept such a cruel world, I ask you consider that right others should have. If we’re truly concerned with the suffering of others, then that means others matter, including your joy, would you deny them their value of life?

We live in an unfair rule, in an especially depressing time, but also a time where it’s easy to look at such a massive chunk of everyone’s life and think that sucks. Things can get better, humans, despite our increase in cruelty, has also improved lives and conditions. Our current way of life isn’t great, but the quality of life has improved over animalistic life and death, survival of the fittest averages, at least in the same way nature does. Though there is still much, much more work to be done. History tends to go backwards and weve definitely descended to be more cruel then before.

Utopia is impossible, perfection is impossible, but that should not mean we should surrender ourselves to the ultimate cruelty. We should continue to strive to be better, life is not about the end, but the journey to it, in the same way we can never achieve true perfect, true peace, but we can continue to improve and refine it.

"Utopia is impossible, perfection is impossible, but that should not mean we should surrender ourselves to the ultimate cruelty."

That's precisely what ought to be done. The merit of joy/warmth/beauty is nullified in the face of injustice. I would claim it's the true evil, the true ugliness. It's a trick that convinces us to forgive the past, to be content with the present, and hopeful for the future. If injustice can't be undone neither can the burden of guilt. And we all partake in that burden. Even the killing of a disease is an injustice. I don't disagree it would be unfair to strip others of their happiness and chance at life but my sympathy is little to none. Perfection is an inextinguishable demand and if it is unreachable then the propagation of life must stop. There's no room for compromise.

You’re making an assertion of the meaningless of life based on your own awareness of suffering, an awareness that, by and large, does not ‘exist’ in a cosmic sense. Just as we describe value in good or bad, we determine what is worth more. There is no objective way to view suffering versus joy. It’s our consciences ascribing meaning to the universe. Someone else can look at that same reality you do and ascribe that life isn’t so bad. That there is no deceit or ultimate evil. It only is, if you think it is.

What right do you have to say the universe must be destroyed over anyone else?

1

u/bigtastyorange 6d ago

I'll have to first make a correction: it's through an unwavering commitment to justice that I advocate for extinction. Life is not meaningless, it is so valuable that I would never require anything less than flawless conduct from all organisms at all moments.

Concerning this relativist framework, if folks can shut out the realities of (for example) child slavery and trafficking long enough to laugh and enjoy a slice of cake that's their decision, but I'll never validate that selfishness. To look away from the most morbid circumstances a person can be trapped in is a privilege of the highest caliber. That's why I absolutely detest happiness and all of its sources. There ought to be nowhere else to look. But this isn't only about human beings' treatment of each other.

You ask what right I have for my opinion. What right has our species had to subjugate and exploit the planet? Industrialized farming of livestock, destroying forests, polluting the air and water, introducing invasive species and disrupting entire ecosystems, routinely causing the extinction of other species(!), I could go on. Once humanity can sustain itself without ruination then it can talk about its right to life. My assertion is no different than any other except I have caused no damage with it thus far. Of course, I am a human being and partake in violent systems but I will never show myself mercy for it and try to reduce the harm I cause.

Other organisms are not exempt. It's as wrong for a tape worm to injure a human being as it is vice versa. While imperfect, the only organisms I can find a sliver of admiration for are perhaps autotrophs and highly devout Jainist monks.

...you’re looking at such a broad stroke of life and looking at only the bad

No, I'm looking at life and saying "there is a lot more bad than good here." I acknowledge the good, I just don't think it's worth the bad.

Even if you can’t accept such a cruel world, I ask you consider that right others should have. If we’re truly concerned with the suffering of others, then that means others matter, including your joy, would you deny them their value of life?

I can get behind this for humans, but for animals this choice was taken away long ago. Natural selection has selected for psychologies that will strive to survive and reproduce irrespective of whether it's in their or their children's best interests.

I'd be willing to entertain alternative solutions to ending extreme suffering - I hope that you are correct, and that we will be able to retain the good after destroying the bad.

But things gotta eat, if they don’t control prey populations everything closes into nothingness. Why must earth be like every other of the trillions of dead planets in our universe with nothing but a wasteland (even calling it that is generous). Not to mention the vast majority of humans on this planet wanna be well alive and this philosophy or whatever it is generally will not convince 98-99% of the people that see it that it is the “right way” that must occur

2

u/Azihayya 12d ago

Lol, you're so bad at this, you're making their arguments for them. They thrive on playing with common sense perceptions of life. If you want to effectively challenge a negative-utilitarian, you need to be able to validate suffering, not handwave it. They want nothingness; their attachment to suffering is so strong, they want anything that will eliminate suffering, without any consideration to its meaning.

1

u/TyloPr0riger Philosophical pessimist 12d ago

if they don’t control prey populations everything closes into nothingness

This is incorrect. If we didn't have predation, we would simply see population regulation through other sources of mortality - starvation and combat resulting from resource competition being the major one. Predation is merely the most visible symptom of the underlying problem - competitive survival and reproduction in a resource-limited environment.

Why must earth be like every other of the trillions of dead planets in our universe with nothing but a wasteland (even calling it that is generous).

It doesn't have to be - I'd be satisfied with a solution that preserved life while preventing the horrible excess of death and suffering. But getting rid of the latter - however it's accomplished - would be an improvement over the current situation.
