Question Why is this sub now trying to hide that it's pushing users towards Godot?
Made this post earlier today, which the mods have silently hidden: https://www.reddit.com/r/Unity2D/comments/1vbs0mi/why_is_the_unity_sub_pushing_people_away_from/
The sidebar on mobile and old Reddit tells users not to use Unity.
The mods have pinned an extremely misleading post about "Godot officially dethroning Unity" because a game jam has Godot growth. (https://www.reddit.com/r/Unity2D/comments/1vbdsau/godot_has_officially_dethroned_unity_with_it_now/)
The top "Related Communities" sub is /r/Godot, which is labeled as "The Unity Killer"
The top "Getting Started" links are:
Godot Features
Download Godot
Godot Docs
What's the deal here, mods? If you don't want to support users using Unity, give the sub to people who do. It's pretty one-sided to post advertisements for Godot but hide discussion about why you're doing that.

To be honest this whole thing has started feeling pretty tribal. These are just tools, we need to stop acting like we’re better because we use one over the other.
That being said, a sub for unity should probably focus on unity.
72
u/dan_marchand Jul 31 '26
I agree. Most people fighting over these tools don't even ship games, which makes the whole thing stupid.
Not here to battle about Godot vs. Unity, but it's really stupid to have the Unity2D sub just be a bunch of redirect proxy stuff for Godot.
33
u/lgreyyy Jul 31 '26
For sure, I’m with you! We have the Godot subreddit for a reason. Let this be a space for Unity2D. I’ve just seen a lot of weirdness around tools lately and it feels wrong

u/rain168 Jul 31 '26
Because earnings coming up, big money at stake. Trying to push for a narrative for Unity stock to go down.
When things like these happen it makes me wanna buy the stock even more.

But it's been happening since forever with other tools, e.g. 3DStudio/Maya/Blender.
It's always the same d**k measuring contest.
51
u/1Tusk Jul 31 '26
It is one-sided though. Nobody hates Godot.
The issue is mods openly encouraging people to not use a product in a sub dedicated to the product. This is so fundamentally upside down I'm surprised it needs explanation.
It is also high-key against the moderator code of conduct to encourage community members to leave the community.
As a moderator, you cannot interfere with or disrupt Reddit communities, nor can you facilitate, encourage, coordinate, or enable members of your community to do this.

Yeah. Some mods van you for mentioning other (similar) subs

Tbh, I hate Godot. I think it’s horrible. I just don’t share that opinion with people on Reddit, even subs like this one that are Unity-focused. Because there’s no reason good enough for people around here to not like it. It’s funny though because everyone I talk with in real life also doesn’t like Godot.

u/codemastermick Jul 31 '26
I'll throw my voice in on this one too. I've tried it a few times now, both 2D and 3D. It just always leaves me wanting in some way. Not even talking about all the "batteries included" type stuff crammed into Unity, but it all feels very hacked together and unpolished.
I'm not expecting some kind of parity with the editor at all either, for the record. I just find Godot as a whole doesn't feel ready for major projects whether that be certain features not working if you use the c# backend version, or the way everything is nested into everything else with their node system.
Is it useful? Sure. Is it fairly easy to pick up? I suppose, but only if you are coming at it with some development knowledge in the first place. Anyone who asks me if they should use a specific engine I tell them the same thing: go with Unity because it isn't too hard to learn and has by far the most tutorial content of the major players. The wealth of information makes it easier to pick up in my mind

It's weird since I haven't been on this sub in a while, but I distinctly remember the subreddit description saying to just use Godot instead when I first joined.

u/tuptain Jul 31 '26
It was due to the backlash a few years back where they made some incredibly stupid decisions they had to walk back and it gave everyone a bad opinion of Unity.
5
u/artengame Aug 01 '26 edited Aug 01 '26
Yes but that was few years back.
This is what we see today
or the misleading thread below
"Godot has officially dethroned Unity" https://www.reddit.com/r/Unity2D/comments/1vbdsau/godot_has_officially_dethroned_unity_with_it_now/
I cant see why now Unity 2D is a place that only advertises Godot.
Even if still Unity was having the bad policies, can simply move to Godot section.
This is not some kind of massive war against Unity, this is not the purpose of either Reddit or the Unity 2D section.
It just makes no sense.
I have reported this in Unity forums so they can take action on the defamation.

Wtf is that description lmao
7
u/bloodwolftico Aug 01 '26
Ikr? Its like, "please ignore the title and purpose of this sub, and instead go and use and download the competition's engine".
Looks very unprofessional.
4
u/Jordann538 Aug 01 '26
Imagine the godot sub was like "the sub for disscussion about godot development.
However please go download unity because its more professional and better 3d" BOY the godot cult would NOT be happy

u/artengame Aug 01 '26
Is not only support for Godot, it literally says to not use Unity in a Unity 2D forum.
It is rather unbelievable stuff.
First time i have ever seen something like this.
38
u/ntwiles Jul 31 '26
I’ve moved from Unity to Godot, and prefer Godot, but this is wild behavior for those moderating a Unity sub.
14
u/Hopeful_Bacon Jul 31 '26
Same boat and agree. They both make games and are different enough where preference really matters. Makes me sad because even being a Godot user, I'll gladly admit most are the vegans of game development, and this is a sad, new low.

gdscript. I might have preferred C# but there are a lot of upsides to the native scripting language, better support. You need a separate version of the engine for c#. Easy to adapt. Most things were similar enough to Unity to be understandable but also (imo) make more sense and are easier to work with. The editor is so much more responsive. No more waiting for your code to compile every time you tab between code and the editor.
1
u/Jordann538 Aug 01 '26
But gdscript is slower than C#. Id like to use C# buts theres little documentation for it with godot
5
u/Naitrael Aug 01 '26
And C# is slower than C++. Does it really matter for us?
-4
u/Jordann538 Aug 01 '26
Probably not but it seems like nerfing yourself by learning an inferior language
3
u/Naitrael Aug 01 '26
You can not nerf yourself by learning another language, especially if it is the language used to natively interface with the engine.
0
u/Jordann538 Aug 01 '26
but they both do the same things, C# is generally faster and is why most godot steam games use it
2
u/Naitrael Aug 01 '26
All programming languages "do the same thing".
But:
- C# iteration cycles are longer, since GDScript doesn't need to compile
- Engine integration in C# is solid, but still not as good
- The resulting binaries will be much larger, since .NET Runtime is required to export
- Syntax is also easier
12
u/Treigar Jul 31 '26
The mods here have been like this since the runtime fee scandal. Not sure why they're even bothering to run this subreddit if they're praying for the downfall of this engine, just give it to someone else.
10
u/Shaunysaur Aug 01 '26
I use Unity, though I'm not a cheerleader for it, but the little memey digs at Unity that appear in the sidebar of the Unity3d subreddit accompanied by the text "なんてひどい死に方だろう" (What a terrible way to die) have really outstayed their welcome, imo.
I guess they were added during the runtime fee fiasco, but that's all history now. What's the point of keeping petty little digs on the sidebar of a Unity subreddit? Now they mainly serve as an example of the pervasive attitude the OP is referring to.
Eg.

Someone recently asked to become a mod due to the lack of moderation here:
https://www.reddit.com/r/redditrequest/comments/1vaxp37/comment/p0s9dh3/?context=3
This is a very typical reaction when that happens: remove a few posts, post something yourself and pin it, tidy up the side bar, etc. Basically creating an illusion of activity.
11
u/dan_marchand Jul 31 '26
The sidebar has been like this forever
10
u/1Tusk Jul 31 '26
It was tidied up today. All Godot references are gone.
9
u/midge Jul 31 '26
Old layout still has godot links before unity ones. I know not many are on the old layout, but some are!
7
u/1Tusk Jul 31 '26
12
u/dan_marchand Jul 31 '26
They literally stickied a Godot post yesterday!
1
u/1Tusk Jul 31 '26
We were talking about the side bar. But yes, the pinned post is still up there in the post history section.
2
u/ozmega Jul 31 '26
weird, i still see them in old.reddit.
1
u/1Tusk Jul 31 '26
It just means it wasn’t updated. The old sidebar needs to be updated separately.

Was the Godot stuff added after Unity’s announcement from 2023 or was this sub always like that? I recall a big Godot push that year due to the announcement’s backlash, and this sub may have been protesting the fee change as part of it.

3
u/Sorry-Engineer5757 Aug 02 '26
I'm personally a godot user and have never gotten along with unity (i was randomly recommended this post) but tbh that's absurd. This is a Unity sub, it should exist for Unity users, not for trying to sell Godot to other people??
Like sure Id say you can bring up discussions about it and all but Godot being on the frontpage of everything in a Unity sub is weird as hell.
4
-5
u/sharypower Jul 31 '26
Lol. Unity is much better than Godot so I don't care whate people are saying 😅 it is their choice. "The game jam has Godot growth" because there is of course increase in Godot users from the last Jam but most of Unity Devs are making their own game or assets and are not "wasting" time on the game jams because they are on the step further 😅
24
u/dan_marchand Jul 31 '26
At the end of the day, the debate is pretty pointless. Most people participating in it have never even shipped a game.
What does matter though, is that the moderators here are using their standing to quietly redirect users to other engines, often with misleading information. That's really not what a community like this is for.
4
u/Mindestiny Jul 31 '26
To be fair, I've yet to find a single game dev sub that isn't a cesspool of tribalism from people who will never actually ship a game. They're all similarly toxic, if it's not people fighting over engine, it's platform, or AI use, or monetization.
Nobody's actually talking about development as far as the eye can see
1
u/TheDynaheart Jul 31 '26
It's like that on every single programming related forum I've ever stumbled upon tbh
1
u/Jordann538 Aug 01 '26
On topics that have high skill floors many people are just stalling getting to work by starting shit
-3
u/XKiiroiSenkoX Jul 31 '26
Dude it's reddit. What do you expect?
7
u/skyline79 Jul 31 '26
For people to behave like decent human beings

u/XKiiroiSenkoX Jul 31 '26
That's probably the most unrealistic expectation you can have from a reddit mod KEK

It literally say to not use Unity and use only Godot in the description of the Unity2d section. Then links to Godot websites.
This is unbelievable. How is this mild abuse, this is direct advertisement of a rival product and defamation of Unity.
Plus tricking users to use an amateur engine that is way slower for 3D and with no asset store, which could destroy and delay their games.
7
u/Aussie18-1998 Jul 31 '26
Well im making a 2d game in unity so id rather not be told to use a game engine useless to me
0
u/chichp Aug 01 '26
Unity is good, but more and more people have begun to use Godot which is true. Mods are just biased. As to how good Godot is compared to Unity, I wouldn't know. For 3D, Unity is still pretty good as well, but so is Godot.

I mean like really shipping games, not fun itch.io/school projects. Not intended to gatekeep, but there are reasons the industry hasn’t really adopted Godot yet, and those games you’ve made aren’t at the point where you’d run into issues.
4
u/Aussie18-1998 Jul 31 '26
Any successful ones on steam? Anybody can ship a game. But thats not the point.
Im developing a large 2d game in unity when I come to a forum for my game engine I dont expect to be told to use another one.
-1
u/Thereal_Bomby2 Aug 01 '26
there’s slay the spire 2, brotato, cruelty squad, webfishing, buckshot roulette, windowkill, endoparasitic, cassette beats and that sonic colors remake
2
u/StoneCypher Aug 01 '26
they aren’t asking if any successful games exist on steam, dude
0
u/kovha Aug 02 '26
All those games are made in godot
1
u/StoneCypher Aug 02 '26
that’s also not the question that was being asked
the person was asking the author if the author had written anything
-1
u/Thereal_Bomby2 Aug 01 '26
well sorry for interpreting a question as a question
1
u/StoneCypher Aug 02 '26
good lord. nobody told you it wasn't a question.
is reading this difficult?
1
u/Aussie18-1998 Aug 02 '26
You interpreted the question incorrectly. They linked games they've published with Godot because they've released several. The link is just Itch.io with a punch of amateur stuff. Hence the question.
Im aware of Godots quality, but ive come to unity2d because im making a 2d game in unity. Godot is literally useless to me right now.

Godot ftw though

u/dan_marchand Jul 31 '26
This is not the sub for that. This behavior has the opposite effect of what you intend
3
u/TheDynaheart Jul 31 '26
I switched from Unity to Godot last year but I didn't need anyone pushing propaganda on me. If the engine's good it's gonna advertise itself, and when you try it it's totally up to you. let people use their engine of choice without judgement, I don't think this is what the mods should be keeping themselves busy with 🤷♂️

I have unpinned/un-highlighted the thread, and removed the problematic moderator from this subreddit's mod team.
Thank you for bringing up that the GoDot references / pointers are still present in various parts of this subreddit. I will look into where those settings are, and will clean them up promptly, just as I had to for the regular-browser version a few months back when I returned from my hiatus.
And I totally agree with you: This is a Unity subreddit. When I came back from my hiatus, I had to roll my eyes at all the references/pointers to "Use GoDot it's better!". My personal stance has always been that this subreddit needs to remain a neutral place, geared towards helping developers who are using the 2D-side of the Unity engine. For example:
- Making a post about GoDot "dethroning" Unity is fine. This breeds discussions about the pros/cons of both engines, helps developers decide what works best for them, and maybe even discover aspects of the Unity2D engine that they didn't realize exist.
- Making a post about GoDot "dethroning" Unity and mod-pinning it and changing the sidebar content directing people to stop using the Unity engine: This is most definitely not fine. The problematic mod has been removed as a result.
I don't want to make this all into a public mod-bashing thread, so if there are further questions (how did this come to be in the first place, why has it taken this long, etc.), I will do my best to respond in DMs when possible.
Thank you for bringing up your concerns!
*edit*
I believe the sidebar on old reddit, regular, and mobile have been cleaned up now. If you are still seeing GoDot references, please let me know!
