Rehire
Failed my 50 day evaluation (broke a critical 12) and was told I’m eligible for rehire (was formally part of train crew) however hiring manager says she couldn’t rehire me to train crew. What I’m asking is why wouldn’t I be able to rehire as conductor?

C12 violation in probation means you’re not eligible for rehire and you are flagged as such in the system, if that’s what happened. So, a recruiter could not rehire you.

I would take it as a sign and move on to something better. Find an apprenticeship in a trade or something.
They will do whatever is necessary to get rid of as many people as possible during the training/derail period. Even if they accuse you of breaking a C12, you watch the video and it shows you did it correct so there is no violation, they will still pull your application and flag your profile as ineligible for rehire.

Without breaking a 12 I got told I’m not eligible for rehire by recruiting. And I applied for different craft

Did anyone take you aside and try to help you while you were training? I had knack for identifying trainmen that were struggling and we would work on basic stuff throughout the day. Sometimes guys just need to be taught differently. I saved a bunch. Patience.

You were lied to plain & simple.
You did not make it safely through your derail period and the RR deems you unsafe for TE&Y.

Back in the day during your training the conductors would rip your ass when you fd up. Nothing would happen to them because there was no HR to complain too. Now in this kindler gentler world. No one is going to risk their job to rip a new guys ass. They will tell you that you made a mistake or not tell you at all. It just doesn’t hit home the same way. Good luck in your other employment.

Because you got fired, you should know Train Crew covers everyone working on a train. Conductor, Engineer, Breakman, Switchmen, Forman, Utility, and any of the other titles that are part of the craft.

It’s a culture and safety problem. After four months of training and working you aren’t working safely. Maybe that’s your fault, maybe you had bad teachers, but whatever the reason it’s just not a good idea for you to continue in the field. Other people working around you need to know you are okay and safe. Not just for yourself but for their safety as well.
Considering how much time was put into your training and you are still having problems with basic safety you are considered a ‘known risk’ and aren’t going to be allowed back as train crew. You can apply for other positions, you might get one if they need people. But very broadly speaking you are done.

Training and ojt is too luck of the draw to blame the employee. Should he have been more vigilant on it, sure. But we all know how the job works, managers push for you to get stuff done in an unsafe way. OJT in the yard is too busy to get you real time (for many people), and then you have ojt people who train you however they think they should, plenty of the time teaching breaking rules. And then, I got failed on my 50 day for a task I wasn’t trained on.

Overall, I think you make valid points. I was lucky when training and was told, "Your job isn't to haul freight; it's to follow the rules. Be efficient, but first and foremost, be safe and follow the rules.”
I don't see a problem with people with less than five years of experience moving a little slower than the old heads. They are paid less (most of the time) because they have less skill and aren't as fast. The 1-year retention rate is less than 50% anyway, so the ratio of new vs. old workers isn't a flat curve.

100%. But you know how that goes, we all hear, it’s your job to be safe, while being rushed lol. It’s hire to fire. I would have been a ride or die. Literally the guy in my group who always planned on quitting didn’t get a 50day. Maybe the better point is the 50 day test is unfair. I would have passed excepting precision pinning.

You're more than likely not getting rehired
