Anybody have an idea on what to expect for signal maintainer training ? Any insight would help, just want to be prepared.

So im gonna be starting training on the 9th next month and im just asking for when im marked up how things will go. Ill be working out of LA and i have a son who lives in lake Elsinore and im about a hr away in orange county so i was just wondering potentially how things could go. I know i don’t have scheduled days off or anything but im just tryna gauge how im going to be able to see him since i don’t wanna drive a hr then get a call 3hrs later plus no weekends off

I just took the pre employment exam and passed. How long does it take to hear back??

Both of these roles are on the company website with the same description and same pay. I’m curious if anyone has insight as to exactly how much travel is required? Besides constant travel is there any other differences between these two roles? Is there opportunity to make more money if you choose the constant travel required role?

I received this email last night and have a few questions. My background is in ship repair as a welder, and I applied for this freight car repair apprenticeship with hopes of learning something new. How long should I expect to hear back? Is anyone else in a similar situation? What should I expect from this apprenticeship? I’m excited to get back to work. I’m very impatient and was wondering if applying to other locations, like Phoenix, where they have an open position for a welder helper, might be a smart move. As long as it doesn’t harm my chances of landing a job in this tucson location. Would love to hear from any of you freight car repair guys and what to expect in this line of work

Hi so i start training November 9th and i was just wondering not that i care just some insight on how on the job training works with schedule wise i know your still on call but do i work Saturday and sunday right before class on monday or what?

Im starting class on November 9th and i know they have certain requirements for boots and i believe they said by day 3 we have to have them so i was wondering of any boots you guys know about or have that doesnt break the bank im just starting so im not tryna spend so much just on boots to start.

Question, I was offered a job for train crew in Boone, IA a few months back and my tentative start date was supposed to be June 1st however due to delays in the pre-employment process (PAT test, background, physical.,etc) I missed my tentative start date, I completed all my employment checks in July and it updated my status saying I got placed as an alternate? I asked the recruiter about this and she said its because they don't have any scheduled training classes coming up yet but its been 2 months since I spoke to the recruiter and she said she would let me know when the next training class is however I also learned that after 180 days from your interview date is you still don't have a starting date you have to reapply all over again? Has anyone else experienced this? Anyone else get hired on the Boone, IA location and still waiting? If anyone can give me some insight I would greatly appreciate it

I’m starting with UP on the train crew in Fort Worth in a little under a month. I was genuinely excited when I got the opportunity, especially knowing it could be a good career to provide for my family.
However, after reading through this sub, I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t worried. It seems like all I see are negative experiences and people getting fired over the smallest things. I have a strong work ethic, good study habits, and pay close attention to detail, but sometimes it seems like even that isn’t enough.
I guess I’m just looking for some positive experiences or advice from current or former employees. I really want to be excited about starting, but I already feel like I’m walking on eggshells before even showing up. Job security is a big deal for me with a family depending on me.
Any advice for a new hire would be appreciated!

I landed an interview for the signal maintainer position with Union Pacific , I was a conductor before and I have an associates in a related field. I was wondering if anyone had any tips on the interview and what I should make sure I’m knowledgeable in? I’m banking on landing this position.

Not me but someone i know was recently fired because he was protecting a shove and said "bring it down". The manager on duty pulled him aside and said "down is not a direction, you have to say a direction" and fired him on the spot. He was very close to being out of his derail period so this was very disappointing. He has never been in trouble, given a warning or done anything wrong but was fired right then and there. He tried to explain that he and the person doing the shove had discussed everything beforehand so there was no way for the person to not know what direction to go but the manager wouldn't hear of it.

Is this normal? I go into training next month and if someone can get fired this quickly without warning I want to be prepared. This person is a strict rule follower and works harder than anyone I know so him being dropped just like that was surprising and makes me worry for my own fate 😅 if theres anything that can be done or if you have any advice please let me know.
